It's the day after my surgery

Signs indicate that I will be going home today. Normally that is ok, but with this ankle and leg surgery..I am not so keen on it. But we'll see.

I am home alone much of the day, so I will be having to get up and around on my own.

The external fixator is gone. I found out prior into the operating room there was a small chance I'd still have it or something like it. But not, so that is good. I have a 'soft cast' on. Man is it heavy compared to what I had before. Causes more pain when I move my leg.

Well, take it ez...hope you get to go home today.....I always get better quicker at home...do not like hospitals.
I imagine anything heavy on your leg will make it hurt more whenever you move it

Normally I agree. But being it's my leg, I am more comfortable being here. Bed is more comfortable, too!!
Just I am real scared of falling. I had a couple of small spills at home before coming in for this surgery. Now with the soft cast on, and being heavier, I am nervous.

Did your surgeon make any recommendations post op, he would be the first person I would ask. 16 days is really not a long time. I personally would stay away from any eyecream that has an anti wrinkle or tightening effect for now, while you are still healing. Some eyecreams make me puff up. congratulations for taking the plunge, you must be so happy !

Alexis, it can be so frustrating when a vet can't diagnose a problem. Did he run any bloodwork or do abdominal xrays? Did he at least administer fluids (assuming your boy is dehydrated from not drinking or eating much for the last few days)? Food and water are the most important things for your boy right now, and A/D gruel or baby food are a good way to provide both. Just make sure the baby food doesn't contain any onion or garlic. Check the labels and make sure they contain ONLY meat and nothing else. Syringe feeding can be made somewhat easier by warming a bath towel in the dryer, then wrapping your cat snugly in it to prevent him from clawing you, and placing him between your legs as you kneel on the floor. You can even use large diaper pins to pin the towel together so that he can't squirm out of it. That'll free up both of your hands to do the syringe feeding. NEVER EVER shoot anything down a cat's throat. The only safe way to syringe food is to place the tip of the syringe in the side of the mouth at the corner of the lips and slowly drizzle food onto the tongue, NEVER straight back toward his throat. This is necessary to give him time to swallow properly so that he doesn't aspirate the food into his lungs. There are tips and tricks at the link I am providing below for convincing an inappetant cat to eat. That link also provides links to the assist feeding website and assist feeding mailing list, both of which can be extremely helpful to you. Always give your cat the option of eating on his own before you syringe feed. The goal is to get him eating on his own again as quickly as possible. If you have to continue to syringe feed for a while and you want to give him more food variety, you can get most canned cats foods smooth enough to go through a syringe by running them through your kitchen blender at high speed with a little hot water added. Since hydration is critical for an ailing cat, put more water bowls around your house and keep them very fresh. If your cat likes to drink out of a dripping faucet or likes to lick water from around the bathtub drain, make those water sources available to him, too. If your vet suspects an infection, then antibiotics are advisable, but they may cause additional problems with your cat's appetite. Unfortunately, some antibiotics can make some cats nauseous. If your boy starts vomiting or develops diarrhea, ask your vet for a different antibiotic. I hope your cat's appetite improves quickly. Please keep us updated on his progress. thanks all! Chisue: my DH is taking good care of me. He is the cook around here anyway, and he has really stepped up to the plate, doing laundry, pooperscooping etc. all my regular chores. i have fibromyalgia, which i am told hampers recovery. so I am used to feeling tired and worn out. I found a good online support group ( in addition to this one) called Hystersisters... it really helps to see where others are in their recovery. I am very blessed to have good friends and family, and online friends too. You all are great for taking time out of your busy days to encourage and empathize with people.

Standard procedure everywhere, surgeon marks patients before anesthesia. Knee replacements are a commonly performed procedure and the vast majority are wonderful successes. To the degree that recovery depends on patient motivation, your DH should do very well!

Dianne, i would be apprehensive about going home too, if I had to be alone. Especially with such a heavy and cumbersome cast on. Is there a intermediate or care center you could go to for a week or so until you are more able to get around? I hope it all works out for you. Sending ((((HUGS))) , Dottie

I sure wish I lived closer so I could come over and help you at home. My BFF and I have taken turns in our lives taking care of each other at times like this. I know what a relief it was to have help. Take it very slow and very easy! Keep us up on how you are doing.

Dianne I'm sure you have a walker but is it possiable to get a walker with a seat? I live alone and had to get one when I was unable to handle crutches and wasn't allowed to put weight on my leg for weeks after a large skin graph just above my ankle. Just rolled around the house, the wheels lock and the height is adjustable so I could get up easily when I needed to. I now keep a walker with a seat in my SUV so I know I will have a seat where ever I am, I can walk fine but standing for any length of time is hard for me. "have seat will travel". Gee! just looked them up and you can even get them from Amazon....who knew. I could have rented one from a pharmacy but felt I would have better use for my money by buying one.

Talk to the hospital's Social Services Dept. They should have some ideas for help for you.

If you have a church family...maybe they would take turns spending a little time with you.

I know in our church we have several women who don't work ...we all make dinners to take to those who have had surgery or for some reason or other have to stay off their feet for a time.

Hope you can get at least a little help for awhile.

Heal quickly and with as little pain as possible.

Can you go to a transitional facility where you can get some physical therapy along with a soft bed and meals?
Check with the discharge planner or the social services director.
I will be keeping you in my thoughts and prayers.

When I had my foot surgery a year ago they told me about these knee scooter things. It has handlebars and a kind of seat on it. You rest your knee on it and push around with your other foot. It was a lifesaver. Before that I was trying to do crutches and kept falling. Once I even fell down the concrete stairs outside! Just about gave Ron a heart attack! That knee scooter was the greatest! I used a wheeled walker like a wheelchair, too. Our family has one floating around for whoever to use then they need it.
