How to remove tile adhesive residue on concrete floor?

We just removed the carpet in a bedroom and there was asphalt tile underneath it. We've removed the asphalt tile but there is a thin black adhesive residue on the concrete floor. We plan on installing oak parquet flooring on the concrete floor but would like to clean up the concrete before we do. What product can we use to dissolve the adhesive? Or, should we try to sand the floor to remove the adhesive? Years ago, we removed the adhesive residue in another bedroom with a really pungent solvent that I think was gasoline based---I bought it at a gas station. I don't remember the name of the product and really would prefer using a less toxic product. I look forward to hearing your suggestions.
