Carpet Pad Questions +
Comments (1)DQ - Frothed foam carpet pad is a variation of prime urethane carpet pad, which is foam carpet cushion made from a solid sheet of material vs. bonded urethane or "rebond" carpet cushion that is made from ground up foam. In my neck of the woods, rebond carpet cushion is the most common type of underlayment, and it is used frequently on stairs. For stairs, I would get a high density carpet cushion (7-8+ pound range). Remember that stairs are tough on carpet. The very edge of the stair tread will wear out faster than just about any other area of your home. What I did in my own home was to purchase Mohawk Smartstrand carpet and I got extra carpet knowing that the stairs would wear out first. This was a small extra cost and it is stored in my basement and is ready to go when I feel it is necessary to change the carpeted stairs. My rule of thumb is that short, dense, high twist carpet is best for heavy traffic situations. The problem is that this tends to look like commercial carpet and most people don't like that look in a home. I have had commercial carpet in my home and for me, I am much more satisfied with a residential carpet. The carpet I have now is Atlantic Shores which is .57" in thickness and it has been a great carpet on my stairs. Hope that helps. Comments (8)Coming a little late to this thread, but... - some commercial carpeting comes with a pad. It's not great or cushy, but it is there. - if you're willing to consider commercial carpeting, consider carpet tile. That way when the high-traffic areas get really worn, you can replace them (though you'll need to consider the effect of color lot differences and some fading/abrupt transitions between tiles you replaced and those you didn't). I've replaced 5-year-old tiles and you can't tell. I have installed carpet tile ("modular carpet" is the industry term) in two houses so far; in one because I wanted a long-lasting recyclable carpet and in a home I rent because the residents wanted a softer floor covering but also had to move a wheelchair (kinda tough on cushy carpet). Put in a pattern (there are dozens) and away you go. Granted, I don't see that much traffic in my house, but you cannot tell the high-wear areas from the areas untouched by feet since installation. That's good enough for me. I figure by the time this house is sold, the new owners will want to put in their own floors anyway....See MoreCan i glue commercial carpet with laminated flooring glue?
Comments (4)Laminate floors don't normally use glue....so I'm having a hard time figuring out what this is. When you say "small amount" of carpet to glue, are you talking about 4sf or are you talking 40sf or 400sf??? With 4sf on a NON floor surface (like on a wall or a ceiling)...go for it. If it is 40sf, I wouldn't. If it is 400sf, I definitely would not do it. Carpet adhesives and 'flooring' adhesives are vastly different things. It all depends on the backing of the carpet....See MoreCommercial grade carpet for household use?
