We just got back from the mountains and a person working in an outfitter's store we were in recommended Ahnu Tilden II. I'm not familiar with this brand but he said the fabric on the top wicks away moisture. He also said they were more comfortable than Keens. I didn't try them on but I liked the way they looked. I have a coworker who loves to order shoes from Zappos. She hardly ever keeps any, but she'll order a dozen pair, try them on, then ship back what she doesn't want. She thinks it's great because of the free shipping, but I reminded her that it does take a while for her credit card refund.

Having just received a small amount of snow - about a couple of inches - I planned to wear rubber boots, so put shoes into a plastic bag to bring with me, then did some other things, including hauling feed and water (need two water pans, bringing one into the house to thaw, daily) to the shed to nourish the cat. After getting out the car, closing the door and taking the cat's dishes back to the house, I picked up a couple of bags of things that I need ... but the bag with the shoes had disappeared ... so I'm travelling in the library unshod ... which is O.K as long as one doesn't put one's foot down on some snow that recently was tracked in by others. On a long-time travel forum, where I've made many friends and met them in person, we had a famous 14-page thread about stylish, yet comfortable walking shoes! As a person who averages 8 miles per day when I'm in Paris, I know what has proven to work for me. Caveat -- when in Paris, where I have many friends, I tend to wear nicer shoes than when I'm in more casual locations. You only get one pair of feet, so I spend a bit more on shoes with comfortable arch supports. I've never found inserts to help much. I like leather insoles, or the Skechers Yoga Mat. Here at home in the US, and in London or UK Countryside, I like Skechers with Yoga Mat insoles. Usually, you can get these under $70.00.
