It's all up to you and your likes, but I wouldn't do tile but maybe in the entry area and baths. Tile is hard on the feet and back. I would never purchase a home with that much tile.

We live in Texas, so this much tile us not uncommon. Have you seen carpet after it has been flooded with mucky creek water? It starts to mildew very quickly. My plan is to purchase rugs that can be rolled up so that if we flood again, we won't lose as much.

I just want to make sure that the flow of the tile and wood makes sense.

I'm with Debbie on this one. I know that a lot of people put tile in their kitchens because it's easy to clean and keep clean and can't be destroyed. We stayed in a home for 6 months while we were doing our renos and that kitchen had tile. Never again. My feet and ankles, after a week, were so sore I could barely walk. Went and bought mats and new jelled-soled slippers and things were better. We put down hardwood and have been back in our home now for a month and I haven't felt any discomfort. Pro-tile people will tell you that hardwood scratches and you have to be careful with moisture (actually with your problem with flooding maybe there shouldn't be any hardwood) but tile is very hard. Maybe carefully review pros and cons of tile and hardwood before making a decision. If you google those terms you will get a ton of info.

If you work in your kitchen for any significant period of time you will come to hat the stiffness of a tile floor.

It is not just the tile, but the extra rigidity that must be built into the structure (to prevent tile cracking) that makes standing for long periods a real chore.

Places that must have tile or concrete floors (commercial kitchens, factories) then invest in floor mats that need cleaning to reduce the strain on the workers.

I have had tile or slate in my kitchen for 7+ years now and never had a problem with my feet or legs. Twice during that time I was pregnant. And I cook almost everything from scratch. If we want this done before this next baby comes, we cannot wait for the flood insurance and use our own funds. Wood is not in the budget especially with 5 kids and one on the way.

Even if I were to use another type of floor in the kitchen, I don't know how I could do it since the room is so open to other parts of the house. Ther are only two walls. I like the kitchen being the hub of the house and very open, which is why I had the wall knocked out between the kitchen and the entry.

My installer has indicated that he has tiled entire homes here in Texas. I'm frankly surprised about the responses regarding the kitchen tile. With this many children, we have a lot of water spillage and I don't want to have to worry about the floors

I'm in Texas and our last house had hardwoods. The dishwasher flooded and they were ruined. We refinished them before listing the house. SO many people who viewed the house said they couldn't believe we didn't put tile in the kitchen - so yes, I think in the hot states, tile is almost expected!
Have you gone to Floor and Decor outlets? They are in Austin and Dallas (not sure where you are) but they have great prices on porcelain and travertine! They have the larger sizes that are so popular now like 16x16 and 18x18.
I think you can't go wrong with tile in the wet areas.
(Lowe's had nice giant gel mats for $19.99 last week, if you did decide you needed it.)

It is far more than just the kitchen the OP wants to tile. I would never have it in my great room NEVER. I also hate walking on my tile kitchen floor in barefeet, absolutely hate it. On the otherhand my wood does not bother me.

The real answer is what YOU want, not what others think. It also sounds like you made up your mind before asking.

I had decided on the kitchen. Wasn't sure about the great room, though. We cannot begin to afford engineered wood in the great room. Our mortgage company has not issued us any money and we need to get the house done asap since I am due with baby #6 in just 6 weeks.

Carpet in the great room would be a disaster. I have pics of what it looked like when the water hit it. It was one of the first rooms to get water in it.

I've been to the Floor and Decor outlet and think we will probably pick tile from there, but it's not easy when all of this is coming out of pocket. We weren't really planning on having to fund this flood on our own.

We meet with the mortgage company this morning and I think we will get $5,000, but that isn't going to go very far when I already have a bill for $37K for water mitigation.

I guess I was just hoping for more information on the rest of the house rather than just the kitchen.

We are in southeast Texas rebuilding after hurricane Ike. We had tile in our kitchen and dinette and loved it, nice and cool on bare feet. We did have wood in our living room, dining room and bedrooms. We are rebuilding on the same property and our home will be complete tile. I loved wood floors but also loved the tile. We are building for us and not for resale so we are able to choose things we like and not consider other buyers.
