Heat Pump and Furnace Quote

Hi All - I live in VA and got the below quote for changing my Heat pump and Furnace Units. The current ones are Carrier and I am considering Trane. Does this sound right or is the quote way over....

For what size living area? For two systems?

All frisky pricing and possibly overkill in equipment selection for your location/climate.

The total area is 4000 sq ft.(does not include basement) Approx 2000 sq ft. on each level. In addition there is a finished basement which is close to 2000 sq ft.

Ross A dual fuel system can be a very effective strategy for heating one's home. Here are a few things that you should consider. 1. a complete understanding of nat gas rates and electric rates 2. your area's winter climate 3. your home's insulation qualities 4.a look into the future as far as whether electric rates are expected to be more stable than gas rates. In general, I have found that an electric rate of less than $0.11/KWh can make a high eff heat pump very compelling. I am attaching a fuel comparison calculator. Keep in mind that a heat pump performs double duty both in heating and cooling so its life may be marginally less on a dual fuel system depending on a good maintenance program. The DOE has worksheets that can help you calculate the relative cost of heating and cooling with different systems using your current energy costs. Of course you need to predict the relative costs over the next decade or two to really tell what is best. How is your crystal ball working? I would like to clear up a couple of common misconceptions. One type of heat does not dry a house in the winter any more than another. Leaky house envelopes dry houses. Heat by flame of some sort might dry a house more because they draw more outside air in if there is not a source of outside combustion air. That would be the only mechanism. There is nothing special about heat pumps in poorly-insulated, leaky homes. No heat or air conditioning source works as well in that situation as well as they do in tighter, well-insulated homes.

I can offer my quote as a comparison. Here is exactly what my contractor will do for the following quoted prices: When installing any of the chosen heatpump systems,I include the following items. The outdoor heatpump unit will be set on a new preformed condenser pad. The unit will be elevated off its condenser pad by using 6x6 pressure treated lumber. All new 3/8" x 7/8" copper freon lines will be installed. Additional 410-a freon will be added during my gauge pressure/temperature testing to match the new heatpump's pressure charts affixed to the inside of the control box cover. All new #18 ga.,8 conductor color-coded copper thermostat wire will be run from the outdoor unit to the new indoor air handler in the crawl space of your house. All high voltage wiring is adequate and will be reconnected to the new unit. The indoor air handler/coil unit will be installed with a 15kw electric back-up heater package. The new indoor heatpump air handler will be suspended from the floor joists. All new #4-2 copper Romex wiring will be run from the new unit over to the main panel box located on the crawl space side wall. All new sheet metal duct fittings will be fabricated and installed from the new unit to the existing ductwork. A 20" x 20" Rheem custom-made filter rack will be fastened to the return air side of the new air handler. I will supply you with a years supply of 20" x 20" pleated air filters that fit the filter rack. The new sheet metal fittings will be externally insulated with duct insulation and sealed with the proper tape. Any new pvc condensate drain piping will be installed. If an advanced thermostat system is wanted,the indoor 7-day programmable wall thermostat I ordered and installed for you will need to be replaced at an additional charge. Other-wise,the 7-day programmable thermostat will be wired to the new system as normally done. The entire new installation will be 100% guaranteed for one year. The new Rheem equipment will contain their specific warranty information papers in their crated boxes. You will be given all that paperwork upon my delivery of your new units. Installed Prices as stated: The Rheem 14 seer rated system is $7,836 The Rheem 16 seer rated system is $9,583 The Rheem 17 seer rated system is $11,385 Hope that's helpful. The one mistake is that the quote for the Rheem 16 seer unit is actually for the 15 seer one. Rheem/RUUD no longer manufacture the 2-stage 16 seer unit.

Tesla Powerwall is a bit different as it uses batteries made with Lithium, however the base model will at best give you only a few hours of run time. Costs $5,500 of which doesn't include installation costs, taxes, fees, permits etc. Tesla Powerwall For that 'maintenance free' solution you will most likely be forced to replace the powerwall every 10 years, maybe less than that as if your system loses capacity leaving you in the dark your choices will be few. So to do some rough math to be possibly free of the electric grid... let's say you can depend on 12 hours of full sun everyday. (of which we know is not possible) So you would need a battery system to deliver the other 12 hours of power. Lets say the base pack works for 2 hours. So you would need 6 times this amount. 5500 X 6 = $33,000! This doesn't include installation, fees no solar panels etc. to make matters worse you spend this every 10 years or less. ( nothing is free --- if you don't spend it on maintenance you spend it in dollars.) For comparison: Your power usage at 1500 kwh's per month at $0.21 per KWH is $315 x 12 = 3780.00 x 10 years is 37800.00 from the grid cost. Just realize solar array prices were not included in above powerwall costs. I believe by the time you figure installation costs for the powerwall, it would be cheaper to just remain on the grid. This is why battery backup is only used for power critical uses. The cost doesn't justify the means.

Furnace is for main floor system? Will be located in basement?

The Furnace will be located in the Basement for the Main Floor and Basement. The Heat Pump is in the attic only for the upper (2nd) floor.

Just a few observations.

Do you have an open ended budget?

For upstairs HP system, I agree about the size of the system, not the equipment selection.

For downstairs system, I don't agree with the efficiency of the furnace or its size as well as the condenser selection. I would want a zoning control for the main floor/basement system. Make the furnace a 95%+ efficiency, forget the heat pump and go straight AC condenser.

I can make some suggestions if you like.

The sizes for the first floor are over sized in my opinion. I also agree with Tigerdunes' suggestions.

Thanks Tigerdunes - Can you make some suggestions? The issue is that with the recent cold weather my Electric bill just for the month of Jan ran up to $400. I have installed all energy effecient lights so I am attributing around $300 to the Heat pump running on Auxillary heat. The basement furnace being gas is running ok on the bills. I need to know if it would make sense changing the heat pump by putting in the 10 grands. I have not had much experience with Heat Pumps in the past so I am hoping that the high bill is because of this unusually cold weather and it would just work out fine once it gets a little warmer.

Have you even discussed idea of a small furnace for this zone?

I would want a load calculation performed.

Single stage HP condensers...XR15,XR16
Two stage HP condensers...XR17,XL18i

Paired with best match Tam 7 air handler and HW VP IAQ stat

Downstairs
XV95 high eff two stage vs furnace 80 K size
Or XV80 two stg vs furnace 80 K size
Paired with XR15,XR16,XR17 AC condensers

Both systems with pleated filter media cabinet.

I would want a zoning control for main floor/basement system.
