is 2-zone hvac/ac system energy saving?
Comments (8)I thought it was minimum of 3 zones up to 5 zones. anyway, as to savings... as you mention not heating/cooling some areas like living are at night has a savings. comfort is a great thing with zoned systems because you can control temps by tstats rather than one tstat controlling whole house. eventually all motors fail. motors on zone dampers are not excluded. any early failures would be covered under warranty & you may have to pay labor to change. you'd have to weigh cost of zone equipment control board, motorized dampers & multiple tstats. against cost of install without zoning. factor in things like vs ahu's, two stage equipment etc to get the numbers to compare. another issue is getting a contractor with experience in zoned systems. I've always found a zoned system to be great & homeowners love it...but if the contractor hasn't done a zoned system, or uses a different brand than they are used to..it can be a disaster. in any event, compare the numbers shop for experienced contractors & get opinions/bids from them. it will be easy to tell who understands zoned systems & who doesn't once you talk to a few companies. best of luck....See More2 stage or 2 stage variable
Comments (15)Bob, I must say you are good for a laugh. I don't know if you make these ignorant comments just to get a laugh or if you are really that ignorant. What is your definition of an "average"? "Most consecutive 100F days: 42 days, 1980 (Jun 23-Aug 3) Most 100F days: 69 days, 1980 All the other years are less." Those numbers are NOT averages. The only "average" I gave above was the statement of "From 1899 to 2004 DFW only AVERAGED 16 days per year over 100 degrees,". Since the factual numbers came from the National Weather Service I don't think they are biased to promote tourism. And given that you can't even keep a friend of yours HVAC equipment running for more than a week, I certainly would not compare your methodology for computing temperatures to be superior to the National Weather Service. Posted by Bob Brown... "I have a problem customer that is an old friend. I spend too much time working on his 2- TRANE systems. Both the 12 year old unit and the 4 year POS. They seem to take a dump weekly. I am the last of many Techs to work on the systems. I first got involved last summer when the new system would not work. I have not been able to keep that system working for more than 1 week at any time." I have a problem customer that is an old friend. I spend too much time working on his 2- TRANE systems. Comments (2)Heat pumps need to be sized for their cooling loads. If you don't then the equipment will run in short cycles during the summer. This means higher humidity, higher electricity bills, and a shorter life span. Over sized 2-stage equipment is a little more forgiving, but in the low stage most 2-stage equipment operates at 70-75% of total capacity. How do you currently heat your house? If it is fuel oil, then a dual fuel system makes a lot of sense. If it natural gas, then you may not be saving much money with a heat pump. Post the rates of your fossil fuel and electricity and a calculation can be done to compare the relative operating costs....See MoreSingle stage vs. 2-stage HVAC system
Comments (11)The overhang issue is a big one. That along with orientation can mean the difference between not using a/c or using a lot of a/c (particularly in your climate) - particularly with 96/60 and low humidity. The unusual thing about that is that traditional construction/design keeps a house cool prior to a/c. I would presume they did it with mass in adobe construction. High desert is so ideal for mass and solar design. Manual Js are somewhat complicated but going line by line you can usually make sense of them. There is usually a summary page that includes the Heat gain and losses per item - somthing like 20,000 btuh from walls, 10,000 btuh from windows. There are measurements of walls, roof/floor, window sizes. You can't ensure that the calcs are correct but you can check the inputs. The dead ringer is infiltration - find that number and see how your house is described. This is the easiest fudge factor in my mind. They often use average - go and read what average is supposed to be - it is not new house average, it is overall average. The a/c load is possibly correct. Windows to the west can let in a lot of btus. Do you have a wall of windows to the west for a view?...See Moretigerdunes
