Quick question regarding my Amana Propane furnace

I have an Amana AMH95 (Model # AMH950703BX).

Installed in January 2007.

Just a quick question regarding its operation.

If we go away for the weekend, I set the thermostat at 55 degrees.

When I return home, I raise the setting to 68 degrees.

The furnace will kick on.

But, it doesn't run constantly until it has reached 68 degrees.

Meaning it will run for a while, then kick off for a few minutes, then kick back on.

So, my question is this:

When the furnace is trying to get to the set temperature, should it run constantly until it gets to the set temperature or is it normal for the unit to cycle on/off occasionally as it is trying to reach the desired temperature?

After wandering onto this site by accident, I have become more than a little amused. In particular, concerning the supposed low cost of operating a professional heating and air-conditioning company. I have firsthand knowledge of those costs. My small business has 5 employees. In FY06, our cost of doing business was over $340,000.00. That includes wages, office and shop costs, insurance (liability, theft, workmans comp, health and auto), automotive maintenance and repair, employee retirement, tools, licensing and permits, etc. That does not include the actual cost of goods sold. Any profit that is earned beyond that amount is at least deserved. Most companies extend a one year labor warranty on the equipment they install. If there is a warranty repair, they are not compensated by the manufacturer for their time. This is a cost of doing business that most people do not consider. If a thunderstorm comes by tonight, and knocks out a compressor, we will replace it tomorrow if the year warranty is still in effect. No, that shouldnÂt be covered but we are noted for going above and beyond. It has built an incredibly loyal customer base. Three of our six vehicles are specialty utility vehicles. These are not inexpensive to purchase, operate, maintain or repair. Operation of these vehicles with gas prices at $2.50 a gallon average $.79 per mile. I am certainly not complaining about my job or my business. I make a good living and very much enjoy what I do. However, since shots have been fired, I feel compelled to fire back. Though we purposefully avoid dealing in equipment as low in quality as the unit described, I have read through a GMC 90+ Installation manual before. Reading the manufacturerÂs written instructions are not an option for this engineer. Whoever heard of an engineer that did not read the instructions? All furnace manufacturers are very specific about the installation of the exhaust vent. Regarding length, size, termination and even number of 90 and 45 degree turns allowed. Additionally on the vent, I have only seen long sweep elbows specified. The point of the exhaust vent termination is critical as are the instructions for preparing the termination area. If the directions are not followed regarding termination, you have a high probability of damaging your home. As mentioned before, we do not install GMC equipment. However, I cannot remember reading any furnace installation instructions that did not specify using a manometer for checking and setting proper gas pressure/flow. The equipment we install is very specific about transitioning mismatched sizes of furnace and indoor coil. It is obvious sir; you either did not understand or did not thoroughly read the instructions. My impression of an engineer that is earning in the mid 80Âs is they must be an underachieving, 9-5 cubicle dweller. I have been a registered PE since 1989. I think you must drive the choo choo. We are definitely not the same kind of engineer. To my knowledge, all HVAC equipment manufacturersÂ warranties are void if the equipment is not installed by a qualified, trained HVAC professional. Your plumber looking at it after the fact does not qualify. However, manufacturers are too lenient about warranties. They will probably give you the parts that might be destroyed due to improper gas flow or improper exhaust venting. However, if something serious happens, like burning down your home or soot damage, your insurance company will want a licensed insured company to sue. Since there is not one, they just will deny the claim. My free advice here is to find an exceptionally qualified company to double check your installation. I am sure they will charge beyond what you think is "reasonable". However, you have stepped into an abyss that is beyond your comprehension.

tigerdunes - I have the model #s so I'm hoping you can help. First I should mention my guy contacts me today and says he can get me a better unit that is HE that comes with a rebate ranging from $300-$700. This new set up is $1000 more (So 4950 total less the rebate). Below are the model numbers. I'm googling them and I'm confused because he told me the new set up would be 96% efficient as opposed to 80% (which is what he org quoted) but the model #s bring up info online that shows 80%. The XV80 would give you the best efficiency performance when matched with the XR16. However, the XR16 is a single stage compressor (on or off). Depending on tonnage of the equipment you may achieve up to 17 SEER with the higher end XV80 furnace paired with the XR16. Paired with the lower XT80 probably some where in the realm of 14.5 SEER. The advantage with the Amana systems is the ability to have a 'full' communicating system which gives much better performance in humid climates (2 stage or higher systems). Trane systems do not have 'full' communicating capability unless you go to the high end inverter systems. If your climate is not humid prone climate these multiple stage machines up to and including full inverter systems are typically reserved for higher cost utility climates like California where utility rates are often 20 cents or more per KWH.

Thank you everyone for the advice and input. The weather here has quickly turned cold, and now I'm in a bit of a pinch to get this new pump hooked up. The current drain line for the pump we have is empty so I'd prefer to install the new unit before turning the furnace on and filling the line with liquid. The pump only needs to lift about 7-8 feet vertical with maybe 25 feet of tube, so probably any pump would work in that regard. Our winters are regularly below freezing for most of the coldest 4 months, so I'm not keen on running the condensate on it's own line outside. I could bury it enough that the cold wouldn't be a problem, but it's already hooked into the the sewage line so it's just much easier to get a neutralizer. I think this time I'm just going to go with my first thought and get this Saniflo 2-in-1 unit, mainly for ease of install because it looks like it will fit right under the current furnace drain pipe and needs no other connections. If this thing doesn't last, the next replacement will be a higher quality pump with a standalone neutralizer. Thank you again for the help on this.

You might be cycling on the limit switch. When was the last time you checked and changed your filter?
Oh and for us more heating and cooling savey then computer savey individuals, what's with the "bump" BS?

"bump" moves the message to the top of the list
so does "ttt" short for "to the top."

I change my filter regularly....
I just changed it a couple of weeks ago.
I use the Endust filters from Lowes. They are MERV 6.
It is 16"x25"x1".

So, if the filter is clean, any other ideas why this is happening?

I haven't had a chance to have my installer/tech come out to take a look at the furnace....

but I just wanted to ask another follow-up question...

Does the situation I'm having, where the furnace is not running constantly before it reaches the thermostat set temperature, causing any damage to the furnace?
The furnace is new (installed in January 2007) so I really want to avoid damaging the unit?

Is it violating any sort of warranty terms?

MJM,

When you say it kicks off, is it the burner or everything, blower fan included, thus furnace is completely off?

If that is the case, versus the burner cycling but the main blower mostly stays it could be a limit or the thermostat

If the whole thing shuts off and sits idle for awhile it could be the thermostat only.

One way to test if it is the stat is to jumper across R & W on stat plate to see if unit stays on under similar circumstances.

follow up....

I came home from work today.
Wife had already turned up the thermostat to the usual 68 degrees. She said the temperature on the thermostat when she came home read 62 degrees. (I turned the thermostat down to 55 degrees when I left the hose this morning).
I checked the thermostat. It read 66 degrees.
I ran downstairs to check the furnace.
It was off. completely off.....no blower....no nothing....and it hadn't yet reached the 68 degrees setting.
It kicked back on a few minutes later and then went to 68 degrees.

SO.....the furnace couldn't go from 62 degrees to 68 degrees without shutting down at least once.

so.....since everyone says this is not proper operation (that is, the furnace should run constantly until it reaches the set temperature), I will be calling the installer tomorrow.

i'll keep you posted.

I installed a new thermostat (Honeywell Focus Pro 600 #TH6110D1005) last night, but before I did I ran the furnace on the old Honeywell stat to see what happened...

Here's what happened:

Got home.
Stat read 63 degree house temp.
Set the heat at 73 degrees and furnace fired up.
Took about 9 minutes to get to 64 degrees.
Approximately 20 minutes later, with the temp at 66 degrees, furnace shut off.
Blower ran for approximately 2:30 then the furnace was completely off.
Furnace fired up approximately 2 minutes later.
Furnace ran for approximately 29 minutes then turned off. Temp was 71 degrees.
Blower ran for approximately 2 minutes then furnace was completely off.
Furnace fired up about 1 minute 15 seconds later.
Furnace ran for approximately 10 minutes and then turned off. Temp at 71 degrees.
Blower ran for approximately 2 mim 30 seconds then furnace was completely off.
Furnace fired back up approximately 1 minute later.
73 degrees obtained some time later. (lost track of how long it ran to get from 71 degrees to 73.)

Each time the furnace shut down, I went downstairs and checked the peephole on the furnace to see if the little red light was blinking any codes. It wasn't.

So I then changed the stat and hopefully that will fix it. If not, then the installer will be coming out.

anyone have any thoughts on my problem??

Well, it seems to have been a thermostat problem, as my installer thought it was.

With his help, I installed a new thermostat.
Installed a Honeywell Focus Pro 6000 (TH6110D1005).

Since installing the thermostat, the furnace has run continuously until it reaches the set temperature.
Most times it has been from about 62 degrees to 68 degrees......runs non stop, no problems.
But I finally went a away for a weekend and gave the house a chance to cool down to 55 degrees.
Set the temp to 68 degrees when I got home and the furnace ran non-stop until it reached 68 degrees. Took the furnace about 45 minutes or so.

Problem solved. Excellent.
