Floating floor installation: meeting nailed down floor?

We need to put in new hardwood floors in our bedrooms, which will meet up with an existing (non-matching) solid hardwood floor in the hallway. The wood floors we had before (they splintered into a million pieces when they tried to pry them up to save them before our renovation work) matched up perfectly with the hallway flooring, so we didn't have any kind of threshold strip. As we consider what kind of flooring to put in the bedrooms (whatever it is, it will be pre-finished), I'm wondering if it's possible to butt a floating floor right up to the existing floor in the doorway (then leaving room for the expansion all along the walls), or if we're better off just going with something that is nailed down.
