My new year's eve party...

OK I'm feeling sorry for myself. I had my meatballs made and cheese dip for chips. I was all ready for the party at a friend's house. We even made it to the party, briefly, when hubby got called in to work again. This has happened the last 4 years in a row on new years eve. I thought this year would be different. We haven't gotten any snow until tonight. GRRRR.

If you haven't thanked those that clear these roads, you all should do it now. He's out plowing so that the rest can get home safely.

OK done with my pity party now. Just needed to vent. Happy 2012 everyone!

I think next year I'll get movies to watch and won't plan on going to a party. Then the snow will stay away. LOL. What are you all doing?

Sorry. We do appreciate the job your DH does. SO got the virus so I'm watching tv and surfing.

I put up my Christmas tree and decor, including the outside stuff, about 10 days before Christmas and keep them up until Jan. 2nd. Most clubs, motels, and restaurants do too. So go ahead. Besides, it's what you like anyway.

Ours was utterly quiet, although not unpleasant :). Both kids were off doing their own NYE celebration so the house was nice and calm. We ate dinner, chatted, then he went to sleep early and I read for awhile. Boring? Maybe but also a moment to cherish being secure in our lives and with so much for which to be grateful. Pizza New Years Eve - best one ever

My brother-in-law in Vermont has hosted the family for New Years for about 12 years. Most years one of the highlights is pizza night. He has an homebuilt, outdoor, wood-fired pizza oven, which he fires up a day ahead to get it nice and hot. He has a professional-chef friend who makes and tosses the dough, and a veritable crew to prepare the toppings, top the pizzas, and slice and serve them. This year I was topping master, planning and organizing the toppings, designing the toppings combos, and topping most of the pizzas that were made. It is a fairly foodie group, so as with spacific there were some fairly unusual toppings and/or fairly unusual combos. Sauces: Red, white, pesto Cheeses: Mozerella, asiago, chedder, blue, goat Meats: Pepperoni, italian sausage, pesto chicken sausage, bacon, hamburger, meatballs, ham, roast chicken, shrimp, procuitto, Vegs: Diced tomatoes, roast red peppers, artichoke hearts, fried eggplant, sauted red onion, carmelized yellow onion, crushed garlic, roast garlic, sauted spinach, pineapple, arugula, kalamata olives, Other: white mushrooms, baby portabello mushrooms, shiitake mushrooms, wild-picked black trumpet mushrooms, spinach and cheese ravoli. After the first few standards of Plain Cheese, or Pepperoni, or Sausage and mushroom to satisfy the some of the kids, I started on the more unusual pizzas. Some notables successes are: Carnesaurus Maximus: Every meat but the shrimp. Philly Cheese Steak: Ground beef, red peppers, sauted onions, Moz and Cheddar Procuitto, Kalamata Olives, blue cheese, carmelized onion, arugula, Moz Eggplant parmesan: Eggplant, tomato, spinach, olives, mushroom, Moz The best one IMHO was the Quatro Fungi Pizza: White sauce, All four mushrooms, roast garlic, Moz After about 42 pizzas, we switched to different crusts and started making dessert pizzas, with sweetened Ricotta, Mascarpone, pineapples, berries, chocolate, reeses cups, crushed oreos, candied ginger, and/or marshmallows. Counting the desert pizzas we ended up at around 52 total pizzas, not quite up to previous years' records but substantial nonetheless. I'll be noting some of the combos Spacific listed above for future years.

Decorating Unfinished Basement for Teen New Years Eve Party

Thanks for the advice - drywall is not an option right now with this timeframe...our son is in college and our daughter is a junior in high school so at this point, we won't be finishing the basement. We do have a bonus media/pool table room on the first floor so this is the usual teen hangout --it's just not big enough for dancing. I did buy some silver tarps and some beige drop cloths to see which one will work better. I was planning on stapling them to the floor joists above. There are some hvac ducts and pipes that we will have to work around so we would need to cut the material to fit around these. I was thinking of trimming this out with duct tape if we use the tarps and with patterned burlap ribbon if we use the drop cloths. Are we safe to have the tarps or fabric next to the hvac ducts? Found a cool large silver ornament that looks like a disco ball on sale at Hobby Lobby and bought 5 strings of white lights so far. The main problem is hiding the storage area. Well I did stay at the party for a bit and caught a ride home with someone that was driving right by my house but she had to work early in the morning and couldnt stay late. I didn't want to get a ride from the other that was going by my house since he looked like he was getting drunk. I'm not sure about his wife though, she was probably sober. I figured they'd be there longer than I wanted to be there and didn't want to take a chance.

Tell you hubby thanks for doing the roads. Here in ND in my area, they are snowy and icy and it is very windy. Don't know how many in the ditches, but I bet there are a few.

If the forecast is desperate, perhaps just drive separate?

And give some room to the plows. They don't have very good vision of what's around them. They have to move fast enough to throw the snow far enough off the road and if it's the powdery stuff, it's snowblindness at times.

Scissors, you bet I thank them! I grew up with a father that plowed snow for the county. Many holidays were spent without him. I am careful to give all road crews, not just snow plows, plenty of room, and slow down for them. We are very spoiled. When dad first started with the county, they only put cinders on the intersections and hills. They didn't start plowing until there was 4" of snow on the roads. They didn't have salt when he first started. Then they would put just a little salt in with the cinders. Now, if they don't salt and plow right away, everyone has a fit, and doesn't know how to slow down and drive. Mind you, going toooooo slow is also dangerous. Remember to gently pump your brakes instead of slaming them on to stop, keep a bigger distance between you and the other vehicles, ect.
