Nevertheless, IMO, if not for slavery, the black generations would still be living in Africa in freedom but may not be with enough food nor many opportunities as here in the U.S.

There's a saying in my language: "From bad luck, good fortune arises". It's sort of like: "When one door closes, another one opens".

If I was black, I'd acknowledged of the past but not resenting it from the present and take all advantages and opportunities that America has to offer today. Too many blacks are still blaming on slavery and still pouting. So, racism still goes on. Many are still living on minimum wage income or even less.

I'm Asian, came here to the US as refugees with my family. Our people came here over 30 yrs. ago with literally nothing on us. In a strange country and not knowing how to speak English, we worked hard and took all opportunities that came to us. We put ourselves and our children through college. Today, our community is mostly of middle class or of higher. I don't know of anyone that is on the street unless by choice.

The U.S. of today is not the same as the U.S. of a century ago. Racism should have been something of the past. It's ashamed that it still exists.

I read the book years before the series and watched it on television a couple of times. I remember shedding a lot of tears while reading the book and the same when seeing it brought to life on television.

I don't know if I could watch it again. Some parts of it actually horrified me, the cruelty shown towards another human.

Alex Haley was in the seat behind us on a flight from Knoxville to SF, it was shortly after the book had come out in 1977, Stephanie was 5. She looked over the seat and said hi to him. Of course she had no idea who he was.
I knew who he was but didn't say anything more than to tell him I really enjoyed the book.
A few minutes later he leaned over the seat and handed Steph a piece of paper that I still have in a frame. It said, Dear Stephanie, my best to you and your family from me and the whole "Roots" family of Kunte Kinte. He signed and dated it.
I thought that was very nice of him, I would have never in a million years asked for an autograph or anything, but he did this on his own and gave it to her. After that we talked the rest of the way to SF. He was a very soft spoken man and very very friendly and nice.

I saw the original Roots on TV1 last summer. Thank goodness for DVR's! Last weekend Roots the Next Generation was on the same station. I think there were 8 - 2 hour episodes which I recorded. There are still a few more to watch. I've learned alot from the shows.

I've seen it twice I think. I'd like to get the CD of it if there is one. I thought I'd seen them for sale. It started on January 23, 1977. 31 years ago. I was in the hospital and had my youngest daughter, Haley, that day. I watched it's beginning that night.

I watched it, the WHOLE series. It was an eye opening movie to a young woman from Germany, growing up without the segregation issue.

I was horrified over lots of scenes.

I saw it when it was aired originally and several times since. I think I have it taped somewhere (if the tapes are still good). It used to be almost an annual thing to re-air it sometime in Jan or Feb and I always watched it. I wish they'd do that again. I also liked the series "Queen".
