humidifier cuts off furnace burner prematurely
After I installed the copper water supply lines and PVC drain lines, I had a contractor install two Honeywell TrueEASE HE200 humidifiers on my two older SnyderGeneral furnaces. They are simple humidifiers with the only electrical component being the water solenoid. One humidifier works fine. The second one works but it consistently cuts out the furnace burner before the blower even comes on (less than minute). So there is a never-ending short cycle of one-minute burner only (with humidifier water solenoid energized), two minutes fan only, everything off for two minutes, then gas valve and humidifier solenoid both energized again until the gas valve prematurely closes and the burner turns off, etc. As soon as I disconnect the solenoid to the humidifier, the furnace will run normal cycles of 5, 10, 15, 20 minutes or whatever it takes to satisfy the thermostat. I have 27.2 volts to both gas valves when calling for heat. Both humidifier solenoids cause about a 1.5 voltage drop. The problem furnace's 24 volt circuit (gas valve and water solenoid) pulls a little more amperage than the combo that works well but ohms law tells me I am still only using about 14 watts between the valve and solenoid on the problem furnace and the 40VA transformer should handle that fine. (.2 amps gas valve plus .33 amps by the solenoid times 27.2 volts = about 14 watts).
Why will the gas valve not stay open when sharing its 24 VAC with the water solenoid? Am I barking up the wrong tree by thinking it is an electrical problem?

Comments (21)The obvious should be stated - the absolute cheapest way to heat your house is geothermal. It should at least be considered. Next cheapest is air source heat pump particularly with an efficient mini split. It seems to me that converting the whole house to a standard ducted heat pump has a fairly low upfront cost and a fairly low run cost. It is a compromise for upfront cost and ongoing cost. I can't see why anyone would recommend propane - unless the goal is having generator backup heat. Are you talking paying $350 for 12 months? A heat pump with electric backup should be 50% of that or less depending on climate and what system you buy. It would seem like Carrier Greenspeed would pay off for such a high heating need. You would probably save closer to 75% compared to oil. So even though it might be $20k installed, the payback is 7 years. You really need to experience a well installed forced air system. I don't know mine is on. I fail to see how a gentle circulation of air through a filter creates dust - it actually reduces it. Comments (4)1.I would want to see a load calculation in writing for each zone. I question the sizing especially on the furnaces. 2. Keep in mind basements at or even partially below grade have a very low heating and cooling load 3.assuming you have no installation issues with outside venting, I would get a price on Carrier's 58MVC high eff furnace for the main floor/basement zone. 4.as far as heat pumps, you would need an analysis of your electric and at gas rates. 5. If you have humidity issues in the basement, you need to address the issue of why before trying to solve with dehumidifiers. 6. Dealer should address your temperature issue with the master bedroom with insulation check and ductwork size check. I will assume room is the opposite in the winter heating season. Comments (23)Well the latest quote is in and it's the best so far. It's for two America Standard Freedom 95, two stage, variable speed furnaces. A 60k BTU system for the rental unit ( it gets a $600 rebate after installation) and a 100kBTU unit ($300 rebate) for the larger upstairs apartment. The quotes include everything; permits, thermostats, hard wired CO detectors, and removal of old oil tanks. 60k BTU cost $5500 100k BTU cost $5900 I will get $900 in rebates so the total cost for the install is $10500 I talked to the contractor as I believed that the units were oversized. The furnaces are purchased from the gas supplier and are the ones approved for rebates. He said a single stage 40k BTU unit will be fine for the rental apartment, but American Standard does not make a 40k BTU two stage unit and the 60k BTU unit will cost the same after the $600 rebate and it will be quieter, cheaper to run and will keep the tenants a bit more comfortable. I could get a 40k BTU Carrier Performance 96, there's a $300k rebate on that. He says an 80k BTU unit would be ok for the upstairs two floor apartment as far as heating goes, but from experience he feels that the larger fan capacity of the 100 kBTU unit is needed to get the air up from the basement to the top floor....See Morecofloater
