smartstrand / smartstrand silk & vacuums
Comments (4)@prairiefox - If I'm not mistaken, Dyson vac's are not CRI (Carpet and Rug Institute) approved. That should be pretty telling about how they treat carpets... Any high pile carpet or premium soft carpet will require similar consideration when it comes to using a vacuum, not just Silk. If you want the softest, most luxurious carpet, you must treat it accordingly. Regular SmartStrand and SmartStrand Silk will both serve your house very well thanks to engineered in stain protection. If your concern is cat vomit, pick a carpet that can resist stains with ease like SmartStrand!...See MoreSmartstrand vs Dyson Vacuum Cleaner
Comments (7)I had my original Dyson 07 animal vacuum for over 13 years and loved it enough to replace many parts over the years, but it was beginning to go downhill. When I found a new top of the line Dyson DC41 @ 25% off after Thanksgiving, I jumped on it. Received it a few days later and was thrilled with it. A few weeks later, purchased new carpeting--the Mohawk's Smartstrand for our family room, hallways and bedrooms. Had it installed about a week before Christmas. Disclaimer: I do NOT recommended any home improvement projects right before the holidays. Not sure what I was thinking :-) That evening I whipped out the vacuum and couldn't believe how difficult it was to push. Literally stained my back. The carpet was dense, but not super high like a shag so I thought this was an issue with the vacuum. I couldn't find anything regarding the Dyson having an issue on thicker carpets and after spending about 20 minutes, it finally occurred to me to do a search using the key words Mohawk, Dyson, vacuum, and problem. Bingo. I was crushed when it hit me that there wasn't anything I could do, including leaving the vent open on the wand, to make it work. I was going to have to let the Dyson go and, as far as I knew, there wasn't another vacuum that came close to its level of performance. I read everything I could find regarding vacuums that performed well on the Smartstrand, including Mohawks recommendations (short list on Mohawks site--which they seem to have created after talking with some popular/ mainstream names. After more research, I still lacked a firm recommendation. The only name that stuck out: brand Riccar , series name Brilliance. Price tag (0ver $700.00) was a deal breaker--I thought Dyson was up there. After getting by with a Eureka for a week, I knew that I had to find something else, so I contacted the owner of a local vacuum store (small business, one owner/operator with about 20 years experience. Luckily, he had recently become aware of the Smartstrand issues and had helped a fellow Dyson lover the week before that had the same issue. His recommendation: the Riccar Brilliance. Price tag was slightly lower (around $600.00). He gave me a brand new one to test drive for a couple of days and I couldn't be happier. It actually works better than the Dyson in terms of cleaning multiple types of floors, especially the Smartstrand (on extra high level) and is made of higher quality materials. I called the owner on the second day and said I'd be keeping her. VERY happy, worth the extra $100.00 and is outperforming my Dyson. My family includes 3 sons, a hubby (general contractor), 2 dogs with light coats, 2 long hair cats--redheads, no less ;-) and a maroon-bellied conure. I'm a clean freak, so this combo is beyond challenging. I am skeptical of people that write long recommendations like these and am only doing so because it may save someone else from spending as much time going from site to site looking for something that will not only work on the new smartstrand, but make letting go of their well loved Dyson pain free and because I am avoiding a huge pile of laundry...never ending. I'm a teacher, have no affiliation with Riccar or any other businesses. Try going with a local vacuum shop, borrow the Riccar and try it out. It will cost you nothing but a little time. Comments (3)Tessa thank you for your quick response. I am only carpeting the bedrooms anyway so it isn't a matter of main living areas and trying to figure out who walked where and why lol. I read your post about the dyson. Partly why I really want a Frieze carpet but am steering away from it. I love it's casual frumpy look but we have a Frieze area rug and it is a nightmare to vacuum. I love the Frieze look but didn't see smartstrand in a Frieze and the Silk is so amazingly soft! You cannot really tell what the sample will look like over a large area. I really wish that carpet samples were ten feet by ten feet or so... But we can't have everything. I am looking forward to getting rid of this 15 year old berber. It has had it. I am talking a total of 73 yards and I really want to like it. So thank you for your input....See MoreSmartStrand Silk vs TruSoft by Tuftex or Shaw?
Comments (21)Oh good Lord! As if I wasn't already torn between the Tuftex and the Mohawk SmartStrand carpet. After reading these earlier comments I am really baffled! Originally I started my search for carpet by looking at nylon only since I heard that it is much better than polyester for wear and tear. But I happened into another carpet store today that carries both Karastan (Mohawk) and Shaw and the sales person seemed to push me towards the SmartStrand carpet. She wanted to show me the Karastan carpet that has been underfoot in their store for the last 10 years. She proceeded to push a heavy display fixture out of the way so that I could see how the carpet sprung back. It was amazing! Plus she pointed out that the SmartStrand's stain protection never washes out, while the Shaw Stainmaster protection washes out after 3 professional carpet cleanings. I am so confused on which way to go. And I need to make a decision quickly since I will be moving into my new home soon. The former owner left me with a surprising welcome gift---183 square yards of dog-urine stained carpeting. It was so filthy that I gagged several times while pulling it up and dragging it out to the garage. So I will be replacing all of that filthy floor covering with new carpet and my head is spinning as to which choice to make. Although my head could still be spinning from inhaling the very strong shellac that I had to use to "seal" any dog urine odors from making their way up from the sub floor. UGH!...See Moretessaduncan
