We moved this year and we love the gas logs in our new house, but since the start of winter we have had a problem with them not working on cold mornings. It seems anything below 35ish is enough to render them useless. As the temp outside warms up the logs will work. Any ideas on where to start troubleshooting? A google search turned up nothing.

After fixing a leaking pipe when I originally started up my boiler, I tried all the methods described above to bleed all the air out of my system hoping the circulator pump would start pumping, but it didn't. So I decided to call a local heating and cooling company IÂve used before and got a service tech out the same day. The Service guy performed some tests and found that the circulator pump seized up and the gas valve that wouldnÂt stay on after lighting the pilot was also bad. He told me that after parts and installation, plus the $89 call fee the cost was going to be $750. So I decided to buy the parts from him that he had in his truck and install them myself. He explained how to best install both units which looked pretty simple. I saved $320 and everything works fine. With all these items being replaced I failed to ask why there was always a light smell of gas when the manual gas valve was open whether or not the pilot was lit. I used soapy water to check all the fittings for leaks and didn't find any. I did smell the regulator that looks like it was installed when the boiler was installed some 30 years ago and found it to have quite the gas smell. Could the regulator be the cause of the gas smell? If so, where could a decently priced one be found? Is there an online source for these types of parts? Thanks,

When oil was cheap, your system was the way to go. An indirect with call for burner is your best option if oil is your fuel of choice or only option

I recently had a stand alone electric hybrid water heater installed and have turned off my oil burner to save on fuel. The burner is a slantfin M/N L-30PT it will be turned on in the winter to heat hot water for my baseboards ( it had a small internal coil for my domestic water ) . In doing some reading I noticed that some people ref to something called a " Cold Start " system .... what is that and do I need that. What can I expect to happen once cold weather sets in here in New England and I flip the switch for the furnace ?
