Silly - Shoe Mold Question

While visiting a friend - I could not help but notice that in the areas that had a medium/dark hardwood flooring that the shoe molding was stained the same color. It was a rounded moulding and the rest of the trim - very large trim was a painted white.

This actually looked very odd to me. I would think that the shoe molding is considered part of the wall/trim mold and not a part of the floor.

Does anyone here have their shoe molding match thier floor color?

I don't know what's considered "correct" in the decision of staining or painting shoe moulding. Maybe, it's just personal taste.

In our case, we decided to not add shoe moulding at all. The gaps between the floor and the baseboard trim was minimal, so dh just put a little white caulking in there.
We went with a 6-1/2" high baseboard trim. Along with being a tall trim, it also has a large enough thickness at the base to hide the expansion gap between the floor and the wall.

In the 2 homes that we have owned, we have done it both ways. In our first home we had the oak strip flooring refinished and we painted the quarter round to match with the trim. In short order they were scuffed and chipped badly. In our second home we refinished the old oak strip flooring in the downstairs and they automatically stained the quarter round. I had never seen this before, but 30 years later, the quarter round is as good as the day they stained it. I love it. It does not appear odd at all. In fact it just blends in with the floor. We chose this staining again when we did the upstairs a few years ago. Upstairs we have some oak and some maple and both floors/quarter rounds look amazing, clean and unobtrusive.

It really depends on what you want. It's an aesthetic question. IMO, either way can work. However, I would personally choose to match the grey cabinet, just so that the shoe would sort of "disappear" into the cabinet. But Im sure either way will look just fine. Hmm... If I had to venture a guess they're covering up a mistake (like too big a gap between tile edge and tub, or jagged/uneven edge cuts) and feeding you a line of BS to cover their butts.

I've never noticed that the toe kick gets beat up so I wouldn't worry about that. As was suggested above and was done in my kitchen for both remodels, a custom size toe kick panel must be made and then scribed to the floor or cabinet so that it sits on the floor. It's not difficult or complicated and it looks fine in the end. The peninsula in our first kitchen was at least an inch rise from one end to the other. They obviously didn't average it. The second kitchen was off by two inches. When I insisted they be reinstalled to split the difference in height between the two ends the contractor refused and I fired him. Had to hire another carpenter to fix it at my expense but it was worth it.

Mine matches the floor. It isn't so unusual in older colonials around here. I've seen it both ways. I don't have baseboard pics but you can see it in the background, below.

Very much depends on the baseboard height, On a tall base you can go either to match the floor or the base to your taste. On a short (3.5")or less always match the base.

Who cares about shoe moulding when you have that adorable dog! And his eyes match the flooring! :-)
