Finally the experts that are not own by the drug companies are speaking out on statins.

Big Pharma makes and sells drugs.

I have read that 40% of the FDA's budget is filled BY Big Pharma. (The Prescription Drug User Fee Act became a law in 1992)

Profits. Above anything else.

Evidently the people in charge have reevaluated statins and are suggesting to doctors to prescribe only to those at high risk and at a weaker strength. That was in our local paper.

So along these lines, I just tried taking some melatonin to help me sleep. I'm really paranoid of prescription sleeping meds though I have tried them and they work wonderfully with no apparent side effects. I'm still concerned about becoming dependent on them. In any case in spite of doing all the other recommended practices to sleep - exercise but not too late, quiet, dark, etc. sometimes I get very little sleep - maybe 3-4 hours. I then have to go to work at a very demanding job for 10 or more hours and I simply cannot function like that. So now I'm avoiding prescription meds and taking something that could be just as dangerous. I've done some reading of what I consider to be fairly reputable sources - lots of potential side effects and possible drug interactions with other meds (none of which I take from what I can tell). It seems to have become more effective after using it for a few days - works great. Interestingly my mother tried taking it years back and she thought it did nothing. Maybe I'm experiencing the placebo effect. It's an interesting dilemma....whether or not to take anything at all to treat a "problem" and if so what. I've also taken Zicam which considers itself to be homeopathic. I find it works really well at heading off cold symptoms - unlike anything else I've ever found. If I didn't have to go to work every day I'd probably be more inclined to just suffer with my ailments but I need to be able to go to work and be functional.

Oh My....Statins are, to me, frightening. I tried to take Lipitor for months. I see my MD at least every 4 months and would take Lipitor for only days before I ached all over and stopped....then 3 months later would try again.....never could tolerate them. Finally when labs and statin came together in blood work, I had muscle tissue in my blood. Never heard of such a thing. DH has been taking some statin for years and has Rheumatoid Arthritis and he is so uncomfortable all the time....finally stopped statin and is feeling much better. We thought his aches and pain was from RA....don't think so anymore. He sees a new MD tomorrow, I think....me on Wednesday.

Perfect example of science moving "two steps forward and one step back"... often times the choices in the design of experiments, methodologies, interpretations, etc. are affected by unconscious biases coming from preconceived notions, monetary incentives, lack of a key piece of knowledge, etc... the motivations are not necessarily all selfish evil but more often stem from hubris and ignorance than anything else... and then of course mix in the human condition of cognitive dissonance and thus the path of science regularly takes that one step back (think of it as science making a correction)... why does this happen? "Its because you don't know what you don't know"... Unfortunately too many people hail science as being totally unbiased and thusly safe to trust/follow with blind faith... I rather look at science as being just another human endeavor and thus fallible, so its safer to reserve a bit of healthy skepticism when it comes to cutting edge science pronouncements. Thus that quote from an earlier posting above "The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts." Both of those quotes are very profound if one will truly expend some time to ponder on the deeper meanings. I've seen quite a few examples running through this thread where people don't seem to understand what those two quotes are referring to. Oh, and Ryan... have you added the rock dust yet? Ryan? Ryan? Ryyyyaaaannn.... (spoken like in that movie... Wilson!... Willlsson!!... Wiiiillllllllssson!!!... I guess Ryan too must have just floated away....)

amunk01, the people selling fear, have sold you on this. First , I did what you said to do, and I found a plethora of results from dubious sites selling the fear. I don't trust any of it. And Second, I found this at Snopes Snopes debunks using herbicide as drying agent, say no actual wheat farmers have ever heard of anyone doing this The number of people selling fear, has mulitplied with this great invention of the internet. IDK, maybe they want to drive traffic to their site to increase ad revenue. Evidently its good business, because these people flourish. Lets go down the list GMO , and btw, CBS edited out a segment of their piece on GMO's, where they discredited the organization represented by the so called woman scientist they interviewed. It was in the piece originally aired. And when the science community says GMO safe, they move the goal posts to glyphosate. This is common strategy for the fear sellers, they scream about an issue and when discredit, they morph the issue into another issue. Organic farming, which now the organic farming business is twice the size of Monsanto, that has people driving across town to over pay at Whole Foods. And has also led to the near destruction of the restaurant chain Chipotles, when the chain tried to be organic with locally sourced food, and their customers almost died from e-coli. Then lets go to other areas .... like that evil FRACKING or pipelines Oil/gas industry can't do anything without having to beat down the fear sellers. They have the public scared of doing anything, we have to study everything 10X's over before anything can get done. This can't continue. Then there's the anti vaccine crowd, led by Robert Kennedy Jr, who is also opposed to FRACKING , whose law firm currently has several suits filed against Monsanto over glyphosate , and is opposed to vaccinating our children, when he's not out preaching about global warming. This fear selling , must be good business for his law firm. The internet has been the greatest invention in my lifetime, its added so much to our lives ............ but there's a downside, and its made the proliferation of rumor and flat out lies from fear sellers, much easier. I see so much fear, this is not what the last two lines of our National Anthem , speak to ..... Land of the free, and home of the brave. We are not that any more, and we've forgotten what FDR said at his first inauguration , " We have nothing to fear, but fear itself "

Statins are generic. Big pharma is onto new horizons. For prevention of secondary events few CV drugs are as well proven as the statin class of drugs. Not everyone can take them due to side effects and that is a very big limitation. I would agree that overprescribing these drugs is a problem. The benefit of primary CV event prevention without other major risk factors is a dubious reason to prescribe. Furthermore no drug is a substitute for good life style choices like eating well (Mediteranian diet), regular exercise, stress management, sleeping appropriately and smoking cessation. Alas even with these good choices some are doomed by their bad genes and predisposed to CV disease. Statins, anti platelet agents, blood pressure control drugs etc all help ameleriorate risk in combination with lifestyle intervention.

BTW what is wrong with making a profit? Development and clinical costs for a new drug are close to $1 B and the regulatory eats up 1/3rd to 1/2 of the patent life. Profit potential is the only incentive people have to invest in saving our lives, improving our quality of life etc.

We all make mistakes,...that comes with learning, it's just too bad that allot of lives will be harmed or killed until we get it right.

Nothing as long as it is being done TRUTHFULLY and HONESTLY.

They may be necessary for those that truly have genetic issues with high cholesterol numbers - but they are being pushed on just about everyone. Me, too. Because I was close to the age of 50. Thank you Lord for me not listening to that "expert." For I have read there is some concern over women taking statins "just because."

I read an article that chloresteral is not the culprit, that is important to have in your body. Also when all of this started scientist said, don't drastically change your diet. We don't know about unknown things that might be in bacon for instance that will keep you well and healthy. Since then they have backed off of a lot of things they first told us we shouldn't eat. One of the main diet books was written by a heart surgeon and he said you need fat in your diet. He advised people not to blot the grease from your bacon and sausage when you fry it, you need that grease.

@EmmaR -- you are correct.

The whole issue of lowering the cholesterol number was to usher in this huge money maker for the drug companies. Now to find that these drugs do NOT do what they were originally supposed to. They will probably just get re-packaged as an anti-fungal, for that is what they are--more or less.

GOOD fats ;) are GOOD! Avocado, unrefined coconut oil (I put a big glob in my perked fair trade organic coffee every morning, flax/borage/olive *just don't heat the olive oil, PURE clean butter. (As for pork, I wouldnt touch those poor abused creatures for anything. They pretty much eat nothing but garbage anyway - why would I want that digesting in me?) Choose turkey/chicken sausage and bacon. Just as good. Personally, I try for free range/organic, humanely treated in my beef/fowl/fish choices.

Good fats are necessary for brains. So just say no to canola, corn and soy.

It's the inflammation that is the kicker for damage done in arteries and heart tissue. (From a diet high in carbs--SUGAR--dairy and no exercise) A surgeon said this:

Having digestive problems from killing off good bacteria causes some really nasty things as well: inflammation, leaky gut, allergies, depression; to name a few. Replace those healthy bacteria *never with the cute little pink ribboned junk yogurt which is ALL sugar!! **Reduce the potatoes, breads, crackers, chips, sugar or remove it all together and let your immune system start working properly again. I take probiotics, kefir and goat yogurt - along with some fermented foods.

My sweetener is pure organic leaf stevia. My sweet is 78%+ raw cacao/dark chocolate which I might put in a cup of coffee too.

Bison is my first choice for meat. There was a time in my life when I thought: ewwwww. At that time I was on migraine meds, antibiotics for sinus infections (but they are caused by a FUNGUS), birth control pills, steroids for sinuses, IBS/GERD meds (purple pill) and a host of others. I had my gallbladder removed and a malignant melanoma.

I was a hot mess and none of those drugs/surgeries did a thing to help.

Changing my diet did. In 2005 I went organic. 2009 gluten free. 2010 raw milk. and on...no more drugs. I feel great. And you can, too.

Say goodbye to the burgers/fries thru the windows. The pizzas. The popcorn. The sweetened sodas that one popular one may contain HEK293 cells - yech. NO THANKS. These corporations CAN afford to make food with healthier ingredients but the synthetic unknowns are way cheaper. And that is all that matters: MAKING A PROFIT.

It is not up to them to educate you. You make the choice. It's all marketing.

Thank you........I try to be correct on everything I post and I often google to be sure. Some times I just post common sense.
