Opinions about Mohawk Smartstrand Enlightened Decor

Can anyone tell me if "Mohawk, Enlightened Decor" smartstrand frieze carpet is a good choice?? (the back of the sample said "Sorona"?) I've been reading on the forum and those in the know seem to like Mohawk Smartstrand (am I correct?) but what about this style? Should I seek out the Shaw Nylon frieze also and/or other Mohawk styles? Is there THAT big of a difference?

Background: my daughter saw a carpet person on a tv morning show who offered a "Labor Day" sale. To try to get me (a little egoraphobic) to make a decision, she talked me into having him come over with samples of colors my daughter described. This Mohawk color, Vintage Cream, matched my house pretty good. Do you think it's a good carpet that will last a long time? (I cannot stand shopping).

Any Sorona product will work well for you. In my region, Mohawk gives extremely poor service IMO but it does not detract from the product. It is a good product from a less than average company is how I see it! Shaw on the other hand is a great company. Mohawk just recently announced a price increase. Beaulieu followed. Shaw came out and stated that yes an increase is needed, but with all the recent flooding, forest fires, tornadoes, and just stepping in to the selling season, they will not have an increase. both other companies retracted theirs. I support Shaw for the difference in how the company is represented. But smartstrand is a good product. No doubt.

Thank you very much Floortech for your thoughtful response. I really respect the kind of business integrity you just described about Shaw. That makes a difference with me. Without you passing this on I would never have been aware.

I actually did briefly ask the rep if he has Shaw and he said yes but seemed to be really talking up this Mohawk "Enlightened Decor" product so we got off the subject. I was going off of slight memory from what I read here and wasn't well versed about Shaw so didn't delve into it further with him. I probably should have.

So I can continue on this search, please tell me if I am understanding what I've read here on the forum:
Shaw frieze is "NYLON" vs. Mohawk frieze who has "smartstrand" which is made out of corn and is soft and really stain resistant and durable? (Why is Nylon better? or are they equivalent and my decision should now be about COMPANY integrity)

. . . and now it begins I had SPECIFICALLY insisted that the carpet be power stretched. It was written on my order. It was written on the installers' job sheet. So what do I find when I check on their progress? A stinger. Which punches holes in the carpet and is explicitly prohibited by the CRI. I took a picture of it and emailed it to Lowes, and told them that the installer had violated the Mohawk warranty requirements. And hopefully didn't take chunks out of my subfloor in the process, but probably did. The installation team manager called Mohawk to confirm what I told him, and they said yes, stingers are a no go. So, I told them they are going to have to do it all over again, with new fresh materials, and do it right. more fun.

We too bought Mohawk Silk (Cozy Comfort or something like that) and initially had trouble with our existing vacs (central system and a Shark). We also contacted Mohawk and purchased a Hoover Windtunnel T Series Model UH70205 which was one of the models they recommended. It works like a champ. We bought online for about $125, but I have seen it since then (or very similar versions) in big box stores. Given the amount we paid to put in this carpet, I was getting nervous when I initially read some of the reviews about vacuum problems, but I have also seen some similar to mine where unhappy buyers started out with vac problems (especially Dysons), only to be overjoyed with the product when they got the right vac for the job. One thing it shows is that you don't have to spend a mint to get a great vac for this type of carpet. This Hoover was less than my Shark! But at end of the day, we LOVE our carpet now -- best ever and would recommend it to anyone! One thing -- what did Floortech mean when he said it "caught fire" because of its softness? I assume that is a figurative statement?

I sell them both...I have a large Smartstrand Gallery in all our locations. I also sell Stainmaster. If I was a consumer looking for a pillow underfoot, I would choose Sorona Smartstrand. If I am being completely honest and I wanted to be sure of durability and a product that will clean well, I would purchase the time tested Stainmaster yarn. I would purchase a good piece though. 25.00 per yard carpet minimum plus pad and labor because stainmaster allows manufacturers to sell some junk with their yarn also..I continue to have some questions about Smartstrand that are being worked on. Their warranty is confusing. It demonstrates a bleach solution on their color wall,however; warranty details my people are telling me states that warranty is voided when bleach solution is used. That is a concern. My company is doing a test as I write this on Clean ability of Smartstrand vs Cleartouch vs Stainmaster Nylon. We placed Mustard and grape jelly on products and we plan to clean at an associates meeting. I am anxious to view. I am going to sell Smart Strand regardless of my test or confusion of warranties as the softness it has can't be compared to anything. I just refuse to mislead my customers and I have to know 1st hand how well it does clean. I also have Shaw coming into the company this Thursday to discuss the smartstrand warranty and indicate they will point to some details I was unaware of as I have embraced Smartstrand in a big way as late. I am featuring it in a 20000.00 flooring giveaway, and I want to makesure my facts are straight when I discuss the products.So within the next week I will have formed a strong opinion on it. I do really like it but Stainmaster is proven and time tested. Good luck.

Whew! I've been trying to figure this out for months and was worried I didn't understand something afterall. I actually found the carpet I wanted at Lowes, a Smartstrand frieze, but there it was sold in two different qualities: a "Best" & "Better". I gave a local store a chance to get close to the Lowe's price and they quoted a Karastan Smartstrand (that to me looked the same) that equaled Lowe's "Best" specs but with a little higher density number (1.968 Karastan vs. 1.714 Lowes). The dealer also said the backing of the Karastan is better. (how would I know??) My sense is telling me to get the Karastan cuz it's only $300+ more (for 1,600 sq. ft!) and I trust the installers better, would you agree? Do I still need to look for the "stripes" on the backing of the Karastan? And what does that mean anyways?

Shaw frieze's can be of different fibers other than Nylon. If you purchase a Shaw Frieze..I would recommend either an Anso Nylon or HGTV Brand from Shaw. The dealer may not have HGTV as it is wildly selective to who they allow and invite to sell it. HGTV by Shaw has some beautiful friezes available and Anso also has some gorgeous frieze's. The warranty will be better with Shaw Anso or HGTv than the Smartstrand. You can place triple touch cushion under the Anso product or HGTV and that doubles the warranty to 40 years. To confuse you more, Tuftex of California which is made by Shaw has Anso Friezes that are the latest in style and fashion. Again Tuftex is a discriminating product and not available to all dealers...but very nice. I really like Anso, they are soft, wear extremely well and have the best manufacturer warranties that are offered. Smartstrand and Shaw are both green products. Both very earth friendly. Shaw has a recycling program in place..Mohawk does not. Smarstrand performs well though. Anso will give you more style choice in a frieze. Especially the HGTV and the Tuftex. Anso will have some lower price options for you with the same warranty..but you'll need to find a Shaw aligned dealer more than likely. All of this can be viewed and found at Shaws website.
