Have any experience with "weathered oak" by duraseal?

Hi All,

Well, the kitchen remodel is chugging along and now I need to pick a stain for the red oak flooring on the first floor. I like the "weathered oak" stain but I can't find any pictures of rooms with that stain.

The small stain samples have been done by the floor guy, but translating those to the feel of having the whole floor that color appears to be beyond my capabilities.

Anyone used this stain or heard of folks using it? Thoughts? Photos?

It's apparently a new stain color ...

One thing to consider is that red oak will get darker and redder as it ages ... will the stain stay the color you want or will the changes make it undesireable.

Also: "weathered" is a trend that is fading for wood finishes. Will having a floor that is clearly a past trendy color bother you? You can't change it without sanding and restaining.

hey there, just wondering if you made a decision on the stain, and if you have pictures?!

i also wanted to just put it out there that the "weathered oak" stain isn't all that much of a 'weathered look' like you'd achieve with bleaching, charring, steaming etc and all the other expensive treatments out there to make wood look old. i like the swatch on red oak because it's just a soft tan color with just enough gray to kill the super warm/gold/brown you get with traditional wood stain colors.

i think it's important to consider trendy v. traditional in all design decisions, but i think it's unfair to steer people away from anything that COULD be conceived as trendy because that basically means everyone should put the traditional floor in every house.

super dark cherry floors were all the rage X years ago, and while they're not all the rage today, they're still probably lovely.

not arguing that it shouldn't be part of the consideration set, but i also think comments about trend scare people off sometimes. :)

anyway, would love to see pics if the OP has made a decision!!

This is quite the coincidence as I’m in the exact same situation this weekend. I’m sandingmy red oak railings and staining them to match my recently weather oak stained red oak flooring. My railings too were that orangey colour. I too considered the darker contrasting route but for me felt matching the floor was worth it. I’m using mainly a hand electric sander which gets 90% of it off. The rest comes off well it’s those sponge sanders with 60grit. I too contemplated leaving the railings the old orangey colour but felt it would look obvious and incomplete that the extra step wasn’t taken. Plus i was concerned about maintaining consistency if I tried blending.Color is minwaz weathered oak. The installers used Duraseal which they said was the same but commercial name. As a side note, my wall and trim colour is BM simply White and using flat black metal spindles which further negated going with a darker rail. My suggestion is either match existing flooring or go with darker color. But don’t leave them orangey

In my experience, standard oil-modified polyurethane wears better, and it certainly costs a lot less. The downsides are slow drying, smell and ambering. As much as I like oil poly, I feel Weathered Oak would turn yellow over time if you use it. We used to recoat a salon floor regularly. At a seminar I asked an expert if he had any recommendations for a finish that would wear better than Traffic. He recommended oil poly and said it wears better than any of the top shelf waterborne urethanes, even the one his company sold. Unfortunately the salon was in a residence hotel and we could use it due to the odor. Depending on your wear and tear, Mega HD Clear might be a viable option for you. It costs about $50/gallon less than Traffic.

I am going thru the same thing right now! We already blended a bona stain and hated it so I am paying to re-sand! My contractor uses bona and duraseal ...here are some of my examples...the classic grey ( big area) is nice but looks purple sometimes...I kinda like your special walnut -classic grey combo....

Neutral = gold(ish). Golden oak = yellow. Both of those colours are SUPER WARM. If you want COOL you need to get RID of yellow, orange and red. duraseal-quick-coat-stain-chart.jpg (1510×1762) (netdna-ssl.com) Have a look at the chart. Can you see green in any colours? Think 'celery' rather than emerald. Each colour has been applied to Red and White Oak (they sit side-by-each). Chestnut has green in it. Provincial also has some green but it turns warm on Red Oak (snick more gold tones). Coffee Brown Dark Walnut Antique Brown These all have green in them. Be VERY careful with Jacobean if you are looking for a 'soft' brown. Jacobean is FANTASTIC at turning the mineral streaks (the grain) DARK BROWN/Black. If you want a soft brown, the Jacobean is probably not what you want.
