Leveling Floor Question

Hi! I'm afraid I complicated a situation:

My 1960's home had existing vinyl flooring in the kitchen, and we want to replace maple hardwood instead. Because the hardwood we purchased is very thick, my husband started pulling up the layers of linoleum--it turns out there were two or three layers of floor. He was about halfway done when we were informed that there was most likely asbestos in the floor, so he stopped. It was recommended that we paint over the floor with latex paint to seal off the asbestos, so I did that yesterday. Now, the surface is AWFUL. Some tile is gone, some is still there. All is painted over. Should I use a floor leveler to smooth it out before starting the installation of the hardwood? What type of leveler should I use?
