so, knives arent ovenproof?

I had to share this with you since I know some of you have done similar things. I thought this was something that other people did, but not me.... I was wrong!

I had a busy week with getting new furniture had having a shelf made for the vacuum cleaners and getting rid of a lot of old stuff. I didn't have much time for cleaning or cooking, so in a hurry I threw some dishes in the oven to hide them. After things had settled down, I decided to make some chicken wings. I took the dishes out of the oven and threw them in the dishwasher that I'd finally gotten around to emptying. Then I put the chicken wings in a glass baking pan, popped it in the oven and put the oven on 375. I left it to bake.... I noticed some cob webs on the ceiling that I'd never seen before (new lamps show everything.... I'm switching back the old dim ones that hide stuff!).... so I got the broom out while I was waiting for the chicken wings.... swept the ceiling and then smelled a weird smell that smelled like burning paper. I didn't think much of it since it had been a while since I used the oven. I kept cleaning the ceiling until the smell got stronger. Then I opened the oven to look closely and found to my horror that I'd forgotten a plastic handled steak knife in there and it was now melting... plastic was just dripping from the oven rack and the knife was fused to the oven rack.... Oh it was a mess! I had to throw the chicken wings out because I thought fumes from the plastic might have gotten into them. I cleaned the mess up, but the knife is ruined and I use the steak knifes more than any other knife in the butcher block. I hate having one missing.... I e-mailed Farberware and they told me that the red knives are discontinued, so I guess it's time to shop for better knives with metal handles. I was still hungry and mad about the chicken wings so I microwaved a plate of leftover chicken alfredo and poured a glass of almond milk. I set it down by the recliner and selected an episode of Keeping Up Appearances to watch on Netflix ready to relax. The phone rang. I answered it.... I came back to watch in horror as dust and "popcorn" from ceiling I'd just cleaned fell down into my food and milk... had to throw that all away too. I was so mad last night I went to bed without eating.... grilled cheese sandwich for breakfast. Grrrrrr

Here's what's left of the knife..... I haven't even had this set a year yet, so the thought of buying a new one drives me crazy! You can tell which side was down from the picture... The paper shreddings on the floor are leftover from me having made a Youtube vacuum video earlier in the day in case you were curious.

Anyone else melted anything fun lately?

Dang. Is that a flame??

All things in life are imperfect and incomplete. Entropy always wins. Having messed up a knife from the set means you no longer have to feel the anxiety of trying to keep them perfect. If you buy a new set, you'll have to start worrying again.

Boy, your day was that day from hexx, wasn't it! I know what you mean about having one of a set missing - really irks me.

I think I count eleven vacuums in your picture!

FYI........ All opinions expressed earlier about Kyocera's white-bladed line I still hold to. I like them. I've sent them all in another time ($10.00 for nine of them) and they were returned quickly as good as new. Excellent service. But I have several more years experience, now. On a lark, I also purchased one their top-of-the-line "Kyotop" 6-inch chef's knives for myself and several for gifts. This is the best they make and costs MANY times more than the white-bladed equivalent. They have a "Damascus" sort of pattern to the blade surface, dark ceramic blades, wood handles, and are promoted is being more durable than the lesser lines. After three months use, I am dismayed to say that they aren't more durable. The edge has degraded (micro-chips) at about the exact same rate as the less expensive lines. They look really neat and in-use perform wonderfully, just like the lesser lines but, clearly, there is no advantage in durability. What we're left with is small differences in configuration and large differences in appearance. I like this knife. It fits the hand wonderfully and is a pleasure to use. However, at the price, for me, I just don't see the value compared to Kyocera's lowest-priced lines. Performance and durability in my kitchen has shown to be exactly the same. At the same time, I've acquired several Japanese steel knives to replace my Henkels and Wusthofs. Have acquired Shun Classic, Shun Elite, Mac, and Tojiro of various types. The steel is harder and thinner than the European knives and in side-by-side comparisons of the same tasks outperform them rather spectacularly. Their 16-degree blade angle makes them incredibly sharp -- even sharper than the ceramics -- and their edges are still easy to maintain. I've found that their hard steel (Rockwell low 60's. Most European knives come in around mid-fifties) and sharpness make them superior even to the ceramics that, I had said previously, stood alone in my experience. I do like the Kyocera ceramics. And their re-sharpening service is exemplary. (I will certainly continue to use it.) Not taking anything back that I said. I just know more, now. If I knew a few years ago what I know now from experience, I would forgo the ceramics in favor of the Japanese steel blades.

I go with the "you have to feel the knife in yoiur hand" brigade. My DH wanted to buy me a new knife as a gift, and was considering the Global knives as they're so popular (so was I), but he was smart enough to know knives are a personal thing and so he took me to the shop to try them out. As it turned out, I HATED the way the Global felt in my hand and ended up (after hefting about every knife in the store) with another Wusthof Classic chef's knife which feels so right. If you get the Henckel's by mail order, is it returnable if it turns out your DH doesn't like it after all once he's hefted it? Or could you physically take him to a knife store and get him to pick one out?

My favorite knives are also the Wusthof Classic. Ours are white. We bought white because they were cheaper than the black ones! Go figure. I've had them for 7 years and have grown very fond of the white color. I also have a set of Henckels which I rarely touch because I don't like the feel of them in my hands. They look just like the Wusthof Classic, but feel totally different. We sharpen ours with the stick and take them in to get professionally sharpen (at the wusthof store where we purchased) once every couple of years. I use the 10" chef and 8" santoku knives religiously. We keep ours in the knife block that it came with on the counter. We do not have any kids. I feel the same way when I go to another kitchen and cannot find any sharp knives. We are pretty spoiled with ours.

Yup, Victorinox/Forschner if you are looking for the absolute most bang for buck. True I fifth the Victorinox/Forschner brand. Fabulous knives; their serrated bread slicer cannot be beat. I have one. And it can't be beat FOR THE SAME AMOUNT OF MONEY. As noted, America's Test Kitchen/Cooks Illustrated continues to rate their $25 chef's knife ahead of the trendy $200 knives as their #1 choice. Now we are getting a little carried away. Like CR, ATK/CI is not the end all be all OMNISCIENT force for good some would make it seem. Sure,Victorinox is better than the worst $200 knife out there. But it is not the best knife $200 and under nor the best knife in the world.LOL My most expensive knife won't impress anybody but me. Based on how it performs. Because no one I know in the real world has heard of Devin Thomas Knives.

Poor Bobby, sorry about the knife, and sorry about your dinner-that-was-never-to-be. Your kitty doesn't seem to worried, though, LOL, I thought maybe that was why you had the shredded paper on the floor!

I agree, now you don't have to worry about losing one of the set, it's all good now. That said, and I am possibly the least anal retentive person you'll ever meet, I find the urge to have even numbers and full sets of things. I wonder what THAT'S about? Never five glasses or seven, it's six or eight, and the same with flatware. They just sell them in even sets, usually.

Maybe get on ebay and see if you can buy just ONE knife? Or a set that you could use for "spare parts"?

Me too, I'm so sorry to read about your bad day. Yeah, I got the same feeling when I lose or destroy a piece of the dinnerware or silverware set. I quickly comfort myself by thinking that when most are damaged or lost, it'd be an excuse for me to buy a new set, new design :) But then,... no more missing piece and no more damage piece happens. And so... I'm waiting... and still waiting....

Hope your days get better and better.

Oh Bobby I feel your pain! One time I was at my mom's house, she always keeps her baking dishes that don't fit in her cabinets in the oven, forgetting this, I went to preheat the oven! About 5 minutes later the smell of toxic plastic filled the kitchen and house! I couldn't figure out where it was coming from until I saw the smoke coming from the oven! She had plastic holders for her corningware in there! Oh what a mess!

Melting knives is understandable...but not red ones! :)

Kitty doesn't mind the smell though, so it can't be that bad.

Some days it just ain't worth chewing through the straps, is it? I like the idea of the red knives though. You could look at wood handled ones as an option. Or just learn from the boo-boo and not do it again. My mother used to leave things in the oven and I don't know how many times it started preheating with stuff in it. Never really understood why either. Gas stove/oven and the pilot light for the oven didn't work so you had to manually light it.

I've had I think one time I left things in there and turned it on. No catastrophies but I just said nope, no more. Ovens is fer cookin, not storin' from now on.

Nice looking pussycat. Kind of looks like s/he likes his/her groceries too! I keep telling mine that she looks like she's doing her impression of "the great pyramid", so she's back onto weight control formula now.

Thanks guys.... I'm glad I'm not the only one. I did search e-bay and they do not have any that match. I'm going to just try to live with it for now even though it drives me crazy.... maybe a spare will turn up sometime when I least expect it.

Jessica, how liberating it must be to not care about the small stuff... if only! That's not a flame by the way, it's just the way the flash caught the melted spot.

Kathleen, there might be 11 in the picture, but there are 43 in the apartment :o)

Yes, Jasper the fat cat is still happy as ever and he's laid claim to the new furniture so that he's sitting wherever I want to be no matter where it is. I just switched him to some healthier low calorie food... the vet told me he was fat because I use an automatic gravity feeder, but he is wrong because Jasper was fat well before I ever bought that thing and his weight has stayed the same since I got it.

I've learned my lesson... no more storing stuff in the oven for any reason!

I didn't even notice the cat was a wee bit tubby! I've had fatter. But he lived with a scrawny little guy under the same feeding regime so I was able to convince myself it was genetics.

My mom used to store her potatoes and onions in the bottom of her lower oven. Every once in a while we'd have an accident.

But you know, you got a lot done and if you lost just one knife, you came out alright!
