Heat pump gas back up conversion

I have a 7-year old, 15 seer, 2.5T Trane forced air heat pump and variable stage air handler with electric resistance coils. In the next year, the electric company is scheduled to remove our all-electric rate discount and rates will nearly triple. For those residents who have already lost their discount, a typical winter bill is in excess of $1,500/month. I've never been a fan of the heat pump (especially in long Ohio winters). For the first time in my life, I'm looking at natural gas as a heating source. Is there a cheaper way to convert the equipment I have already so gas is the back up as opposed to the resistance coils or am I better off getting a new gas furnace?

Second question: I'm on a slab and all ductwork is in the slab with cold air returns in attic. Current air handler is located in a closet adjoining my bedroom. I'm a little leary with a gas furnace being located so close. Any chance a gas furnace could be located in the attic or would that be a logistical duct nightmare?
