unemployment compensation question

A friend of mine told me that her daughter, who lives in NJ, was laid off from work about 2 months ago. She was earning only $26,000 a year, but because of the NJ laws she will be getting $30,000 in unemployment compensation, and this lasts for 18 months. As a result, she doesn't really care if she finds another job any time soon.

It seems that since salaries are pretty high in NJ, that workers are given unemployment checks in the amount of the average state salary and unemployment compensation is not based on the actual salary earned.

If this is correct, it certainly doesn't seem to be a very smart thing to do. No wonder the state budget is in major trouble.

Here in Florida, I believe an unemployed worker only receives a percentage of his salary for the 18 month period.

What are the unemployment laws in your state?
