Natural treatment for tinea versicolor?

Hi,

I had tinea versicolor on my chest about 15 years ago. I took nizoral and it cleared right up. It's back, and I'm thinking I'd like to try something a little more natural. Anyone ever use something natural that worked for tinea versicolor? Thanks.

When I lived in the Phillipines (Manila) 25 yrs. ago, I ordered Calamansi (the juice from this citrus fruit) from room service to mix with a drink. Instead, they sent up a bowl of this lime looking fruit. Apparently some Filipinos actually rub this on their skin to lighten it. Being Irish, I never had the need to try it, but some swear by it.

Tinea versicola is a fungus.
I am guessing that one of those liquids for athlete's foot would cure it...but I sure don't know.

Here is the problem: There are thousands (and more unknown)types of fungi in the environment. They all cause different symptoms and can require different treatment protocol. The key to treatment is finding out the particular strain from which you are suffering. I have been dealing with kerion lesions all over my body for the last few months and I'm very quickly discovering that doctors and vets are CLUELESS in Mycology. They learn the very basics in med school and don't further their education. You have to be proactive with your health and do the research yourself. There are fungi out there that are zoophilic as well and you can pass infection between your pets and vice versa. You really have to see a doctor, preferrably a dermatologist and ask for a fungal culture. They will take a scraping of your skin, a biopsy, or hair samples and send it off to a lab to culture. There it will grow in a dish and go from there. Some fungi grow relatively quickly, others, it may take weeks for results. I just can't believe that the medical community isn't better educated. I went to the ER because I don't have insurance. I told the doctor about my symptoms, ranging from fatigue, hair and skin problems, all the way to arthritic joints. I also mentioned my 3 dogs have the same type lesions. I told him I thought I might have a systemic fungal infection and his response was "First of all, I'm not a vet, so what your dogs have is of no concern" and "Systemic fungus won't present this way". STUPID!! So...what does he do? Takes a skin scraping, goes and looks at it under the microscope and says to me that he didn't see anything crawling but he did see something that looked like it had 'branches'. Ummmmm, HELLO?!! Branches=Hyphae=FUNGUS!! So he prescribes LAMISIL and Bactrim (antibiotic). Well, if he knew anything about fungi, he would have known that antibiotic are the worst treatment for fungi. They kill bacteria and then the fungi have all the room in the world to grow. Making your infection even worse. Don't let a fungal infection spread, they can be very dangerous and I believe are the source of a lot of major illness. The post above me mentions the light and dark spots and not being able to get rid of them. I'm not a doctor but it sounds like Tinea Versicolor, which is a non-invasive fungus that can be treated with over the counter preparations with active ingredients such as clotrimazole or miconazole. You have to treat this for a long time and may never completely kick it. Don't start and stop any treatment because it can become resistant and stronger and your condition may get worse. Probiotics are readily available at any health food store or pharmacy. There are food products out there with them in it also. Not just any yogurt will suffice. It has to have live cultures in it and if it doesn't say that, it doesn't. I think Activia is a popular brand that has lactobacillus acidophillus in it. Just do your own research and take your findings to your MD. Hopefully, he/she is open to learning and listens. If not, seek out another doctor that is!!

The issue as I perceive it, is that the this skin condition has yet to be successfully treated. I would expect the doc to refer out to the next level of specialist if he has yet to successfully clear up the condition or often a patient out of desperation gets fed up, stops looking for treatment or hopefully seeks out a specialist who has greater experience or education. I'm concerned S. may have gotten caught in this. I want her to be proactive for herself and continue to seek out answers. With a condition that is so challenging, docs doing lots of research (medical schools) or infectious disease docs often see very challenging issues are likely going to be the best to identify what is going on. Dermatologists though good, do not necessarily have the exposure to very challenging issues. I don't want S to get frustrated and stop seeking treatment. I am hoping to get her seeking the very, most successful medical help possible. I believe she can call the offices to explain her issue to see if the offices feel prepared to treat. If so, she can go back to Derm doc and ask for a referral to a particular office. Patient's often don't know where to begin and don't know the next steps to get the help needed. Not all specialists see all the very challenging conditions out there but don't necessarily want to say " I'm stumped". That's why a patient needs to be highly proactive for themselves and it is amazing that when a patient needs help and seeks it out from top docs, the pathways can be made smooth for the patient to get the help needed. I want S to push forward to get the help she needs, even if she needs to be pushy. I want her to fight for herself as we all should. That's not an attack.

The last month has been amazing for both making fresh herbal teas and drying herbs for teas after all the fresh stuff dies back in the fall and winter. Lemongrass is just one of the things I put in my teapot when making tea, but it's real simple - I cut off a couple stalks a couple inches above the ground, rinse it, and either shove the whole thing in the pot or cut it in two-inch pieces. For drying, I cut it into about six-inch pieces, then once dry I cut it into smaller pieces for addition to my tea blend. Of course, I almost never would put only that in my teapot - I'd also include some mints, some stevia, lemon balm or lemon verbena, pineapple sage, catnip, nettles, bee balm, etc. Of course bee balm is now flowering, and it has a much more sage like flavor, but I have cut and dried some of the flowers to add to my blend (the red flowers add a nice pink color to the tea). It really just depends on what I want. The other day I made a tea with a lot of strawberry mint, some lemon verbena, stevia, and anise hyssop, and a little store-bought green tea (it's looking like it will be years before the tea camelia's I planted will get big enough to supply all the green tea we drink). It was great. I think it's a far better bet to find some fresh lemongrass stalks at an Asian market or some grocery stores, put in a glass with water to see if roots sprout (or straight into a pot keeping the soil moist), and then potting it up. I've kept mine going for years, splitting what was overwintered in a pot each spring, half in the garden, half back in the pot with some fresh potting soil, bringing the pot in before danger of frost. Seed for lemongrass seems like a process that will just take far too much time, particularly for something that really wants full sun and heat but dies if left out in the winter. I want big massive bunches of it fast once it gets hot, because just like lots of other grasses, in the scorching blaze and dryness of late summer lemongrass suffers just like any other grass. I split mine and put some in the garden (here in Virginia) just a little over a month ago, and both the potted and the garden plant are already huge cascading fronds ready for tea.

Just a note on the Oryzalin treatment of your Irises to convert them to tetraploids. It won't be as simple as spraying a bunch of growing plants and hoping to get some conversions. As with your roses I'm guessing you are treating stems or shoots with the chemical. The rose meristems are quite a bit more exposed and accessible to the chemical than irises. With irises you will need to expose the meristem tissue. Since I am starting on working on this myself I have dome some research. There are two methods to achieve direct access to the meristematic tissues. One is to remove all leaf tissue from a rhizome and carefully scoop out the area around the growing point. This is obviously very tedious and would require a lot of plant material for practice and hope of getting some that would suitable for treatment. Plus treatment with oryzalin is no guarantee of conversion. The other method is to treat fresh seed or seedlings in oryzalin and allow them to grow and select the ones you think have been converted. There is an article where this discussed and I can't seem to find it at the moment but if you are interested I can email you the link and you can read it over - rather complicated and scientific though. What I got out of it is that I decided the best method for achieve converted plants was to treat seeds and seedlings with a solution of Oryzalin (0.5 ml in 1 gallon water) overnight. I'm not sure that this would be considered a natural treatment, but I can tell you that it has been a miraculously successful treatment...

I am a 25 year old male and have had a SEVERE CASE of tinea versicolor for about two years, as it has completely covered my stomach and sides of my upper body as well as a little on my arm. I have been, no exaggeration, to the doctor at least a half dozen times seeking various treatments, which have ranged from selenium shampoo, to ketoconazole (did three different cycles of this treatment), to lamacil,etc... and NONE OF IT WORKED!? I understand that the success rates are generally about 80% with each, so I must have been in the unlucky 20% with all of them. HOWEVER, about two weeks ago, I was putting on my favorite cologne, Locoste Red, and decided to spray it on the tinea versicolor located on my arm, just to see if there was any effect. The next day, it appeared that there had been some improvement, so for the next few days I continued to spray it on that same part of my arm, and within about three days, IT HAD COMPLETELY DISSAPEARED!!! Now, I donÂt know if any and every alcohol based cologne would work, but all I know is that after spending at least 15 hours of frustrating research online, plus all kinds of time and money seeing doctors, I promised myself that if I ever found anything that worked for me, I would post my testimonial on some of the blogs that I read to hopefully help some people out. And now, after spraying the cologne on my stomach and sides of my body over the course of the last week, I can say that without a doubt, and for whatever reason, the Lacoste Red cologne has cured my tinea versicolor!!!!????

I just discovered that I have this.. i thought it was sun spots from being in hawaii for 6 weeks but knew it was something else b/c the reddish/pink spots turned white since i came back. When I was in Hawaii they disappeared almost completely but came back since i returned to the mainland.

I am sure it is propelled by a diet consisting in white sugar, flour and any foods that will create a yeast based overgrowth in the gut.

When i was in hawaii i stopped eating wheat and it cleared up completely. But now that it's back and i have been eating wheat and sugar again, Im sure its related.

I will now also be trying Tea Tree Oil mixed with a little olive oil to dilute it. Tea Tree is very anti-fungal.

We'll see!

I've had this reoccurring problem for 27 years. Since my sophomore year of high school. I swear I got it from the football shoulder pads. The only thing I've found to work is selenium sulfide. You can get a prescription for a stronger dose, but I've found the easiest solution is Selsun Blue shampoo. Just rub it on the affected areas of your body. I do it overnight then shower the next. Be sure to wear a shirt so you don't rub off onto the sheets. There's the dreaded blue/green kind or a light tan which blends with my skin color better. I make sure I never wear a shirt I've sweated in or too long. This seems to make it grow fast! I've never been able to cure it , but I've been able to control it....... The key to controlling it is do not wear dirty cloths, reusing towels before washing, changing sheets twice a week and never think it's ok to go to bed without a shower!

I have dealt with tinea versicolor for over 40 years -- until last week! I applied organic extra virgin coconut oil to the tinea versicolor rash on my neck and torso once a day at bedtime for about a week, and it has completely cleared up.

I have been using organic extra virgin coconut oil as a facial moisturizer for a couple of years and decided to try it on the tinea versicolor rash. I hope it works for some of you as well as it did for me. So easy and so healthy!

I had a fungus on my chest years ago and I treated it with over the counter Tinactin. I already knew to use it even after it cleared up. Worked for me.
