Comments (2)About 10 days ago, as I have done in previous years, I knocked my large lemon grass plant out of its big pot. (Sometimes the plant has been in the ground instead of a pot.) I shook off as much soil as possible, then trimmed off all dead leafy material. I tore apart the stems (rather hard work!), each having a bulbous base, and then trimmed those leaves back by about half or even more. Most had very little to show in the way of roots remaining. I cleaned off the rest of the soil as best I could, and now the stems all are in a large crock of water and all show new roots coming from the base. I plan to distribute these to the members of my herb group so everyone may have their own plant next year, and we will pot up the rest to sell at our herb sale in the spring. I keep the leaves trimmed back somewhat rather than let them get too tall indoors as they try to do in the window since they are not getting as much light as they would like....See MoreLemongrass

Comments (5)I've grown lemongrass from seed and from grocery store stalks. Seed takes a while and easy to die off inside in my winter climate but stalks were stronger and are multiplying like crazy now. Look for those plastic little clamshell packs since moisture/freshness of stalk is a concern for rooting. Try to find a piece that still has a bit of stalk below a joint. Peel away 1 leaf at a time from the joint til you see bumps, those are the root nodes and stick in water just to the bumps since you dont want top to rot. Change the water every other day. As the roots grow either the center will re-grow green shoots or new sides will come up. I tied a string around the top of mine and cup rim so I could suspend higher up with more water to allow the roots to grow longer and thicker before putting in dirt. Mist it a bit as it adjusts to growing again. After a few months as it gains outer stalk clumps and multiplies, the original will dry out....See MoreDaisyduckworth
