anybody tried guayfenesin for fibromyalgia?

I've read the book, and visited the site explaining the protocol. I was all set to try it when my rheumatologist decided that instead of or in addition to fibro I have lupus. She is starting me on another new medicine and I didn't want to start 2 things at once.

A few years ago I tried it for about 5 weeks. I think I was using about 1200mg a day. I already have a hyperactive bladder, and that made it so much worse, that I gave up trying. I didn't notice any difference with it......but hopefully it might work for you. From what I understand, you have to be very careful not to use any acetasalisylic (sp?) acid with it....whether in meds, foods, cosmetics, etc. Good luck to you.

I never had fibromyalgia, but I do think I had some sort of chronic fatique for a quite a while. I came down with some sinus problem and my doc put me on some guaifenesin combo cold pill. After the medicine was finished and the cold went away, I felt a hundred times better (with the daily fatique). I always wondered if there was some correlation with the guaifenesin I took.

I have some other health problems, so I never really know what is going on, but if that chronic fatique comes backs, let's just say, I'll be waiting for a sinus problem so I can get some more of those pills!

Oh my.......just reading all these all these posts have me smiling, and tears rolling down my face, plus a few chuckles, and the biggest, warmest feeling ever!! You all are the BEST. So much caring, support, advice, and enough sweetness that I feel like I'm in a candy store. :o) I truly love you for all the joy you give, and the big hearts you have. I've been concentrating on the work and not the joy, I'll work on that and my decorating this weekend! Thank you! I don't know how to you make all those wreaths with everything on your plate, and all the pain you deal with too. So very hard on you!! Sending you love and prayers, always. But he'd bring them in, if I asked. He seems to think if I don't ask, then I must not need help. Jeeez. You on the other hand are a huge help, I loved what you advised....."my advice is to choose a subset of decorations that are your favorites or most important to you and begin decorating. Several of our ladies here are dealing with the same huge loss in their lives and I need to apologize to all of you if I was insensitive. I also regret you are another of us who suffer Fibro, but you're in good company here for sure! That is wonderful you've been asked to decorate for a home tour! You must do beautiful things. I hope you can share pictures with us. Yes, holiday depression this time of year is pretty common unfortunately. Since my Dad died, I sure had a bad time the last two Christmas'es with it. And fighting it this year, but at least I'm beating it for the most part. I look forward to Christmas Eve with family, but Christmas day makes me sad. Here 'alone' and its just another day. (Mr O still goes to golf course, tho its closed, and just practices. Or watches football.) Yes, ginnier, this a lifelong battle. I too cannot give you first hand info. But I have watched my 45 year old daughter struggle with this nasty disease for 25 years. First you need to know that treatment has advanced greatly since her grandmother's struggle with RA in the 70's. DD was hospitalized more times than we can remember in the early years. Then came methotrexate, which helped the RA greatly, but she was in the hospital twice with infections caused by her weakened immune system from it. She took it for a time by mouth and it eroded her esophagus, so she was put on injections for 8 or 9 years. She did quite well during that time, but by the age of 40, she had both knees replaced and a wrist fusion. When enbrel came out she was put on it in addition to the methotrexate. Since then she has been doing well, but I am aware of a slow but steady decline in her stamina. She has worked for 20 years as a physical therapist assistant. She knows what to do to keep herself at her physical best. She rides a bike when she can, and does water therapy regularly, but has just applied for SS Disability because she cannot be a reliable support for the patients she works with in her job. What she wants is retraining for perhaps Occupational Therapy through the BVR, but she must be declared unfit for her present occupation first. Stress does play a role in RA. When you are stressed you are more likely to have flareups. And the disease does ebb and flow. DD had months of symptom free time and with the addition of the newer drugs her flareups were further and further apart. The support of family and friends will be a big help to keep you less stressed. A positive outlook (I know it will be almost impossible at times) will be your greatest ally, along with a close relationship with your doctor.

Hi All!! I go to a rheumatologist next week.....I have been hurting real bad all over but mostly in my hands. I can not close my right hand without screaming....it hurts so bad...When I wake up, it's like I can't hardly walk and I can't hold my toothbrush. Last night I got feed up with it and took half a pain pill. (Vicodin).... My regular doctor go all mad when I kept complaining about pain. I also have Hepatitis C. Just found that out last year....I had back surgery a year ago in January, almost 2 years now....and I was complaining about my belly being bloated then....well, now it looks like I am PG...A older lady friend at work came up to me one day and said *you looked PG*.....I said, *I know*.... :-(....I went from weighing like 120-125 to 140-145.....It's really not the weight, it's how my belly is.....I also have had an under active thyroid for years.....now, it is all messed up, too...I have had to change my meds 4 times.....this last time, instead of coming back in 2 months, they say 6 weeks.....Sooooo, have I bored you all yet?? LOL....I could live with all of this if only MY HANDS worked....LOL....Now I almost can't wait to see the rheumatologist. Oh, I forgot the best part...LOL...How I found out about the fibro, was I had went to my normal GP doctor and him and I got into a little disagreement. I was complaining about hurting and he was say crap like *look at your file, look how big it is, and there is nothing wrong with me...Yada Yada, Yada....* Well about 2 weeks later I came across my bill and he wrote on it Fibromylagia. I didn't even know what the heck that was.....LOL... How can I get up in the morning without my 3-4 cups of coffee?? I need that....LOL Thanks for listening.....:-) Good Luck to you Lawmar!! I got it at the health food store. Some brands mix it with something else for a digestive aid....I just got the regular unadulterated stuff. I never heard of it until our good friend/massage therapist told us about it. It's been around for at least 25 years in Europe. I've had the bottle for a couple of weeks now and I only take it here and there, if I feel a "sinus day" coming on....works for me within 15 minutes. I wouldn't call it the next miracle cure....just something that our drug companies aren't into. There's alot of money to be made in pain relievers! It's really cool to walk around a health food store once in a while or go there first if you need some "everyday-type" medicine rather than to the pharmacy. Not saying it's less costly (usually not), or works better.....just probably better for our bodies in the long run.

carla.......I think that sinus infections and problems can really sap our energy. Maybe that's what was making you so tired?
Also....on the other hand....with my fibro and perimenopause, I discovered that I had LOTS of sinus problems. When I started talking to other people with fibro AND women going through perimenopause, sinus problems seemed to increase during these conditions.
I've started thinking that our sinuses are a good indicator of what's happening in other areas of our bodies.
I know I've really said nothing here, except to mention what I've noticed.
But I'm glad the guai seemed to have a big effect on you.
Maybe I'll try it again. Only problem with it is it makes me have to pee constantly.
Oh....and you can get quaifenesin over the counter now. It's called Mucinex. And it's in the larger dosage that you should take for fibro.

Oh gosh no, I don't think the chronic fatique I had was just from a cold or sinus infection. It lasted over a year and was different than the fatique you get with a cold or strep. I couldn't even drive for a few months. I'm sure others who have it know what I mean. I just know that sometimes chronic fatique and fibro. go together, so I thought some here may benefit from my experience.

Like I mentioned, I did have some other more serious health problems, so maybe it was just a coincidence with the timing but I wouldn't doubt that the guaifenesin did something to help. I didn't read about it being used for fibro. or chronic fat. until way later, so I know it wasn't just wishing thinking on my part either.

I think my prescription dosage was different than the over the counter Mucinex, and I know it was and a lot cheaper because I remember the doctor talking about it.

Sorry, I misunderstood you carla. I had debilitating fatigue for several years too. It really stinks.
I was on quai....about 600mg 2-3 times a day. I believe that's a moderate to higher dose for fibro. The mucinex is 600mg tabs.
If you can get a prescription for it, and have good insurance, it would probably be cheaper that way. The mucinex is $20 for 30 tabs.
I tried it for about 5 weeks, and didn't feel any difference.

Hello. I have had Fibro since 1996 and have tried everything.
I have been taking the guyifenesin,2400 a day and I feel much better. I started with a low dose at first and then went up in dosage. It takes awhile before you feel any different. You have to drink a lot of water because it detoxes your kidneys and liver also. The first 2 weeks you may have headaches and feel like you have the flue, but it is worth it in the long run. I still have my days but few and far between.
You have to eat right and try to exercise a few days a week,which I am tring to do....
Dont give up on it..I have been taking it for 3 months and feeling better...( also taking lexapro and Neurontin.)

My sister in law suffers from Fibro...for a few years now...and I have friends that have suffered from it too...I have even suffered from chronic pain, but never when to a doctor for it. Umm gaufinsin is a mucolytic it helps break up mucuous. So I'm not sure how it helped pain.
