Waiting for the inevitable

I feel like a bit of a mess today. My mom has been seriously ill for sometime, and each time I was told she would die, she somehow pulled a rabbit out of her hat and survived. She actually graduated out of hospice last March.

She got a cold/ pneumonia a few weeks ago and hospice was brought back into the picture. I didn't think she'd recover, but she shook it and her lungs are clear; however, I received a call from hospice last night because she is in decline and they think it's a UTI. They keep telling me that she is going to be fine, but I know it won't be this time. I think her kidney's are probably shutting down. I spent the night at her care home and I slept on the floor next to her in a sleeping bag. She is terribly, terribly thin. I could literally see the bones, ligaments and capillaries in her hands through her transparent skin.

It was her birthday two days ago and my late dad's is today. He died at Christmas six years ago and it appears she is going to do the same. Last December they told me she'd be gone by Christmas. I guess there's nothing to say and I'm just very sad. I look forward to loving the holidays again. Maybe next year.

I'm so sorry.

I think people sometimes "stay around" to be here for a significant date or event, like their birthday or an anniversary, or maybe to see a child or grandchild.

She sounds like a remarkably strong woman;
love on her while you can.

Thank you Sylvia. I just came from seeing her. She said she is ready to go, but afraid. We had good moments, me talking and her nodding. The hospice nurse thinks she'll be gone by the weekend because everything is shutting down. I apologized for making her angry all of the time and then she smacked her lips together for a kiss. It is hard and it is sad, but I know it's for the best. I must say that I can't believe both of my parents had to choose the holidays for their departures. Uuuugh.

I'm late joining this thread, but I'll throw my 2 cents in... I just received the Naylor Creek catalog and took a look at hosta 'Erotica'. It's gorgeous and I'd love to grow it, but I won't. Why? Because I like to label my hostas with metal plant markers and don't want one of them to read H. 'Erotica'. I don't want to have to explain the name to my kids or to any friends that want to tour my back yard. I'm not particularily offended by suggestive names, but it doesn't mean I want to display them in my garden either. I wish the growers wouldn't use them. It's kind of like swearing in public. You can do it if you want, but some people won't appreciate it and may get offended. On the other hand, no one gets offended if you don't use it. Why alienate people when it's unnecessary? Sometimes it's just better to err on the side of caution.

I am much more of a cat person than a dog person. So, when we brought our cute little kitten home, we all loved him especially my one daughter. Well, then the honeymoon ended and he started peeing everywhere. He had been with us for about a year at that time. We tried everything and nothing worked. The crazy thing was that he hardly used the litter box but always asked to go outside to go to the bathroom. MY DH finally got fed up with it and we sent the cat to live with his mother. She is also a cat lover and didn't want to get rid of him after he started peeing at her house (this I attributed to their being cats/cat pee in the house). We found the cat a new home and hopefully he's not peeing there. Our DD (who is now almost 7) and it's been over a year and a half since we got rid of the cat, still misses him and wants another cat. I've toldh er that if I could guarantee that the cat wouldn't start peeing in closets, I'd get one, but since we can't do that, I've told her no is the answer for now. It kills me to see how bummed out she is over the departure of her cat, but I also know I can't risk going through that again. From the posts here, it looks like cats more often don't pee than do...that's at least a little encouraging.

Al doesn't like or dislike what people decide to do with/to their plants; he realizes, and always has, that it's the plant owner's place to make all decisions about how the plants (s)he owns are treated. He does, however, have a decided interest in providing reliable information that others can use to make informed decisions. A small to middling fraction of hobby growers might be able to bring along attractive-looking plants in media based entirely or nearly entirely on very small particles like peat, coir, sand, topsoil, compost, composted forest products, ......., but the fact is, these soils will nearly always rob plants of a notable measure of potential growth and vitality. If you think back to threads in which there was lengthy discussions about soils, I never once decided for the grower what (s)he should/shouldn't do about soil choice. The discussions and/or disagreements center on what is or isn't a 'good' soil, or what happens in soils to rob plants of potential. It should be easy to agree that a good soil shouldn't have inherent factors that rob plants of large measures of potential. To me, a 'good' soil is one you can water to beyond the point of complete saturation at will (so you're flushing the soil of accumulating salts when you water) without the plant having to pay a tax levied by extended periods of saturated soil after watering. When it comes to hydrology, adopting a soil that allows correct watering practices w/o that penalty are always going to be superior to those that sap potential due to a continual or even extended intermittent period of saturation in more than a very small fraction of the o/a volume of medium in the pot. Not only are they superior, they make other aspects of husbandry that often cause problems, notably fertilizing, much, much easier and more effective. The good news is, there are ways of dealing with less than stellar soils by using one or more of several methods to limit how much excess water they hold by means other than changing the soils make-up. The fixes won't necessarily be the same as using a highly aerated soil based on larger particles that naturally holds a very limited amount of excess (perched) water, but they (the fixes) can be used to significantly limit the loss of potential caused by what would otherwise be just another soggy soil. I have to say, thus far, you've done a beautiful job with your renovation. You have a very functional flow, and your space is well lit for functionality, which is something that a lot of people don't pay attention to. You've selected some nice quality tiles for your kitchen, and are making a wise decision in choosing a tile that is not a stone with a grain that will detract from your counter top selection. As a designer, the first thing we're taught is not to use blue tile in a kitchen. Though it might look nice in your kitchen, there is a psychological basis for this fact. As blue is not a common colour in food itself, people don't associate it well with food. There have been several studies that prove that the colour actually kills your appetite. There's an article about it at https://www.colormatters.com/color-and-the-body/color-and-appetite-matters Another issue with using blue is that when light reflects off it, onto your food, the tint actually makes your meal look less appetizing. So, blue? Pretty for the eyes, and good if you want to start a diet, but not an entirely practical colour for your kitchen backsplash. Of the samples you have shown, the white one on the far left would be the best choice. It will keep your space light, modern, and not affect your psychological attitude towards your food; not to mention the fact that as it is a good tile, not dated, and complements the rest of your room, it is a good choice for re-sale value. Trust me, the smallest things can set people off. All in all, though, you've created a magazine quality kitchen, and you should trust your taste and your instincts. They definitely haven't failed you thus far!

I pray that you and your mom both soon find peace, Gerina. Sometimes it is just giving her permission to leave and telling her that you love her.

I always thought that losing a loved one during the holidays would be so horrible, that it would fill them with sadness but you know, it really makes no difference. I lost my mom in July, the holidays are just as sad and I miss her just as much as if she had died on Christmas Eve. My thoughts for a blessed holiday are coming your way.

I think you're getting ahead of yourself grieving for future Christmases...

You can *always* "re-claim" Christmas, or anything else, by filling in the space occupied by grief with something happy/joyous, so just concentrate on your dear mother for now.

Her saying she's afraid would bother me;
you might get her pastor or somebody to call on her, or get counsel from the people at the hospice, but whatever you do, reassure her that there's nothing to be afraid of, that she'll be going to her people & that you know she'll be there to welcome you when you come across.

*Many* people "choose" the time between Thanksgiving & Christmas to leave;
I think it's a combination of wanting to see one more Christmas & the shorter days & longer nights.

Maybe it's easier to let go when the more dark night hours are longer.

As Sylvia already knows, because of my angry post on the step family site, my mom passed two days after this initial post and her funeral was last week. It actually went well.

The entire thing was like an encore performance from when my dad died, as they died one week apart and had both just had their December birthdays (same ages too and passed at the exact same time of the morning).

Part of it isn't as bad as when I lost my dad because his death was unexpected and she was so ill for so long. I am going between feeling crumby to feeling like nothing has changed (again she was very ill and not participating much in my life). It's just crappy because it's the holidays again, I have no kids, and my only sibling is also dead.

I guess it is what it is and I've been through this drill before and I know what it takes; and that is time.

Hi Sylvia,

I am the one who was so angry about my DH and SD25 for their rude, insensitivity and thoughtless behavior. I still never received a phone call nor sympathy card from SD and I never bothered to say anything to him about it. It just wasn't worth barking up that tree with him because he was really trying his very best to support me in every other way during this difficult time.
