Best flooring options for a kids' space?

We have a 200 sq ft room that we will be setting up as a home school room for our three children. The room currently has old grey carpet that has to GO (we just purchased the home this month). I have been researching our options, but my own personal experience with flooring is limited - hoping to get advice from the 'pros' here!

Our requirements - easy to clean, easy to maintain. Something that won't get too damaged by spills (though we'd clean it up promptly). Not too hard of a surface. Cost-effective and long-lasting. We will *probably* plan on installing it ourselves, so something DIY, too!

I have been looking into everything, from rubber garage floor tiles to cork. :-) Doesn't matter if it's a 'traditional' choice or not; we want something that will work for us. Vinyl appeals on many fronts, but I have a hard time getting over my own prejudices against vinyl - which may or may not be legitimate!

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
