I'm making bubble gum today!

Granted it's from a kit that 9yo DS got for his birthday...but still pretty cool :) Good thing for a snowy Sunday afternoon. Who wants watermelon?

Ah well, at least you get to TRY to exterminate them. My hubby is feeding them because "they are sooooooooooo cute." When I point out all of the holes and tunnels he just laughs and walks around singing in falsetto "I'm Chip, I'm Dale..." He is absolutely in love with squirrels and chipmunks. I was so glad NOT to have squirrels here..but my trees have now matured enough to attract them. The bunnies are bad enough but at least I can fence them out! I may need to just set up the bucket and murder a few on the sly without telling him. I'm already notorious at the house for my brutal murder of a vole with my garden rake. [gives an evil grin and wags her eyebrows a bit]. This spring when I was raking back the chickweed a vole went scurrying and I gave it a whack with the garden rake, successful in breaking its back but not killing it. It let out a scream and I yelled back at it "shut up" and hit it again until quiet was restored. Then I went looking for its relatives. I tell that story to my son's girlfriend quite often. I have NO idea why I do that... :-)

Marcy, I've received seeds in trade for A. cana, but I've never been able to harvest much seed from the tubular agastaches at all. One year I had a bunch of "Salmon & Pink", yet I was only able to harvest about 10 seeds TOPS! No problems though from others; A. nepetoides, A. Honey Bee Blue, and those types.

Thanks for your input knuttle. I know this would be a huge expense. Our neighbors across the street just had several very large eucaplytus removed from their backyard (even taller than our gum tree). They had had concerns with branches breaking and landing on their house when Santa Ana winds come around. It took over three days to remove their trees and I can only imagine the cost. The cost alone could be enough to prevent us from taking our tree out. I guess there used to be several gum trees planted in our neighborhood. It seems everyone else has already taken theirs out and we're the last ones to still have one. I will look into the city laws as well. That thought hadn't crossed my mind. Perhaps a good option right now would be to have the tree trimmed. I don't think it's ever been properly trimmed and there are several large branches close to our house. And I will absolutely add "picking up pods" to my kids' chore list. :) At any rate, like I mentioned, we won't be making any definitive decisions this year. We'd like to at least have a full year in our house to get a better idea of the year-round maintenance of the tree before we just cut it down. (And I knew you were joking about blowing the pods down the hill. We'd also like to stay friends with our neighbors.) :)

All of a sudden ProClassic gumming up horribly

Original poster here--it was not happening with just a new can of paint--it was happening with the bottom of one can of paint and with a brand new can, too. I find that I can get good results with ProClassic only when using a ton of extender. It works pretty easily on thin trim pieces, but you have to be so careful with doors, and the only way is to take the doors completely off, lay them flat, use a ton of extender (till the paint is almost like water) and then use A LOT of paint so when you come back to feather through it is still wet enough to not streak and clump. Even still you can't get a perfect job. Well today I am painting the front of an exterior door, and they recommended I used All Surface Enamel. It is a revelation how much easier this stuff is to work with! It still dries pretty quickly, but you can actually pull your brush through more than twice before it ruins the paint job. I wish I would have started using this long ago, it would have literally saved hours and hours of work and turned out much better results. I have no earthly idea how anyone can possibly use ProClassic straight from the can successfully on any surface larger than a couple inches wide or long. Oh and I have been using a really good Corona Excalibur brush, so that's not the problem.

So, how'd it turn out? I've never made bubble gum but I did make lip gloss from a kit once, LOL.

That sounds like something that my kids would love to make, but they have a habit of falling asleep with gum in their mouth if I don't catch them and boy do we have a mess.

We didn't end up making the gum yesterday I was missing a few things so I need to hit the market before we can get to chewing :) I'm definitely making watermelon first - they have mint and blueberry too [getting Wonka flashbacks from that one].
