Why are people having to scroll horizontally on my web page?

I recently added some affiliate icons to my web page at http://www.e-broadbandnews.com

I received an email from somebody this morning telling me that she now has to scroll horizontally on my web page.

Can somebody look at my html and tell me what the problem is.

Thanks

Alan

I've been asking the same question about certain sites I have visited.

Even in the Computer Forum occasionally the pages come up wide.

This was discussed under computer forum

I may be wrong, but I think it has to do with the monitor dpi setting. Mime is set at 800 X 600 and I don't have to scroll. Ask the person that emailed you, what screen size settings he is using. You can't make it perfect, for everyone.

I intentionally set the page width to 1000, to force horizontal scrolling, on a web site I have....however, I'm sure some people have to scroll more than others (or, maybe not at all).....I have to scroll, with my setting.

Carol: Yes, I need zinnias...and more daylilies & salvias, if I can find a spot with enough sun. I do throw a lot of cosmos seed out, but they don't bloom for me till August. Thanks, Annette! Most of my pathways aren't visible from the street, but I've had walkers say that they like the beds they can see. One even brought me some of her extra ferns and daylilies. Nell: Of what you listed, I've got the V. bonariensis, which doesn't ever reseed for some reason. A friend keeps giving me clumps of hers. Also have S. farinacea, which never looks happy. Don't know why as other salvias do fine here. Have a purple leaf vitex (pretty leaves but only tiny flowers) & lots of Katie ruellia--never heard of the Brazilian. Nicotiana is something I've always wanted, but don't think of when I'm anywhere I could purchase it. I love plants that smell good. Will have to look up the rest...except Esperanza which I know of but is a color I try to avoid. bekcgarden: Thank you for the recommendation. I've heard of High Country Gardens but have never ordered from them. Will have to take a look at what they sell. Thanks all for responding. I'm definitely going to focus this year on breaking up the sea of green that I have until the plumbago starts blooming.

Why are em addies shown on member pages??
Q

Ok...Peggy, You now have a link on your page, so one can email you via the form here. The email addy is shown to No One...not me, not a non member, and it will not show in your posts. There for a few days (in Jan) maybe, it was showing everyone's addy on their posts, but I have not heard of anyone having individual problems since that was fixed. I guess I am just not understanding what you are saying. If you post to a thread, it shows your addy in your post? If someone emails you via the form here they can see your addy? Remember, that is only a member who is logged in that can see your actual email addy. I see your page says you cannot be reached via the link. as it goes to a 'bad' addy on purpose due to the problem. My settings are:Show my addy to Members and Allow others to email me via the forms via GW That places a link on my page. That shows my addy to other Members when they try to email me via the form. That does not show my addy in post. If I reply to someone else's thread, and they have chosen to receive replies to their thread in an email, they will see my email...thus it will not be blocked. Have you set your settings like that? If so, why not try again, and then refresh your browser after updating the info. Likely you will then see the new info. Once you have it set as you want it, you might go to the test forum and check it out there. You can see then if it appears in the post, and I can also tell you what I see when I click on your page, and if I can see your info. There are several 'regulars' there who can/will help. why cant people see photos on my website?

The problem you have is that the links to the pictures are pointing to your hard drive. For example: canada_blk.gif is pointing to file:///D:/frontpagexpress/touchup%20attempt/canada_blk.gif, it should be just canada_blk.gif if it is in same directory as the html file. Also it doesn't look like the gif file is actually on the web site. At least not in the home directory of your web site. So you actually have two reasons why the pictures do not show on the web, but shows on your computer. 1. The link is incorrect, 2. The gif files are not on the web site. You said you used SmartFTP to upload the pages. You should use the publish from the File menu (I have Front Page, but I don't use it). That way I think it will resolve the links for you and get everything you need up to the web server in one shot. Also if you actually have a directory called 'touchup attempt', rename it so it does not have a space. Notice in the above example there is %20 (hex value of space) is in place of the space. Dan

I truly don't understand how or why anyone is offended at ma'am. It is a sign of respect to others. Weren't you raised to say yes/no ma'am and yes/no sir to others in response to questions? I was taught to say it to any command, reprimand from an adult, I.e. no running in the school as well as general questions from anyone I didn't know, I.e. waitress asking, are you done with that plate? Age has never been a factor. If the cashier who is clearly younger than I am in the store asks if their is anything else I need, I reply with, "no ma'am", if I need help from that clearly younger man in the store I don't say, "excuse me young man (to me, THAT is patronizing) I say, excuse me sir" Maybe it is regional? I've only ever had a few people get upset and say something to the effect of I'm no ma'am/sir!!! Which just makes me think, obviously or you wouldn't act that way.

Alan,

I went to your site and the home page is ok. Even if someone elects not to scroll, only thing they miss is the links to the affiliates. However your reader's respond page you have to scroll to read it. I noticed that your articles are written across the screen, why have the reader's comments be written so wide?

I use 1600x1200 on one computer and 1280x1024 on the rest. But I NEVER use the browser in full screen mode. Any site that makes me do that, I doubt I visit again.

O.T. Customer No Service - amazon.com ranks right up there in that category. No phone number on the web site. Canned response to emails.

I think I know the answer to your question about reader mail, and it was the same problem that I had on my home page. Whenever I cut and paste from an email message, this problem gets created.

Any suggestions?

On other pages, are you using css to layout the page? I see that it resizes. If not using it already, you should use it. Of course you can always use table to layout the page.

You're using a table and presumably you set it to a certain width instead of just using 100%. I think that's your problem.
