Non-breaking space question

I have a problem using & n b s p ; (no spaces) on this site and another site that I do some HTML work on. It seems to disappear from the code and leave a regular (empty) blank space after I submit it.

I ran into the problem when setting up a table - a table cell was not correctly formatted with only an empty blank space in it. I thought I found the solution - using & n b s p ; in the cell should have solved that problem. When I use it though, the typing disappears and leaves an ordinary empty blank space and the cell formatting problems. Has anyone else run into this problem? I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.

What are you expecting to see? All you would see is an ordinary blank space. But the browser won't do a line break at that point.

I realized that my previous post may have sounded a little sarcastic. I didn't mean it that way at all! I really didn't understand from your original post what you wanted to see when you use & n b s p;.

Grafting Apple to Non-Fruiting Pear Tree Question.

In the spring of 2012, I attempted to graft a Pear scion onto my apple tree using Winter Banana Apple as an inter stem. (All of he grafting i do is "Whip and Tongue" grafts wrapped in grafting tape. I then coat the wrapped union with grafting wax) The parent branch was a Winesap Apple branch with a grafted Winter Banana Apple scion from a few years before. (I actually have two of these paired branches.) I then attempted to graft two "Kieffer" Pear scions onto my two Winter Banana Apple inter stems. The "Kieffer" Pear scions started to grow, but died a few weeks later. This spring (2014) I attempted to graft this Apple / Pear union again using the same Winter Banana Apple inter stems. I had just enough branch on my Winter Banana branches to try this experiment one more time. This time around, I used "Sunrise Pear" scionwood. The grafting was a screaming success! (I had enough "Sunrise Pear" scionwood to graft two branches onto my apple tree, and two more onto an ornamental pear. All four pear grafts were a success!) I have no idea why this experiment failed in 2012 and was a success in 2014. I do not know if it had to do with the pear variety used, or if it had to do with environmental circumstances. I will re-post in 2015 with an update. There are a few different treads on this subject so I will be re-posting on those threats also. Below are pictures taken on 07/27/2014.

I have decided to change the topic of this thread a bit. I now seek to know which leptomorph bamboos are the least aggressive spreaders. The pachymorph spreading types usually either seem to have trouble surviving or recovering from the summer or they are a tropical species which would either not survive the winter or would be almost killed each year. The Thamnocalamus tessellatus would not be damaged by the cold where I live however. I could use containment methods such as mowing however if the bamboo is less aggressive than the vast majority or leptomorph types then it would perhaps need only mowing for containment. I have heard that Pleioblastus Simonii does not spread aggressively (I am not sure exactly how that compares to the aggresive spreaders though). It has many interesting characteristics.

To get the truest flowers (i.e. nearest to the stated size, color, form) it is best to have a single stemmed plant at the ground. It is also good to dis-bud and de-branch, but that's another story. I was introduced to dahlias by a friend who simply yanked tubers off a very large clump and pushed them into the ground by hand. Those grew without any tending, and had many stems from the ground. They were beautiful, and had many flowers. However I had no reference...nobody knew what variety they were or how large the flowers were supposed to be. Ergo I had no idea whether the flowers suffered as a result. Now that all my dahlias are carefully chosen and labeled, I pursue flowers as close to ideal as I can get. For me, this begins with a single stem from the ground. More than one stem means multiple full plants would try to live in the space one needs. I use the formula that a dahlia needs a clear circle area the diameter of the height of the plant to thrive. This lets air and moisture get to all parts of the plant, and allows me to move around it to take flowers and tend the plant (dis-bud/de-branch.) If two stems are left to grow from the single tuber each will suffer. But again, it doesn't mean they won't grow. Pick the stem that seems to be the best. That might be the tallest, the thickest, the best formed...no need to choose until they are all 10" - 12" tall. I would suggest you pinch them just below the lowest set of branches that are above ground. This will, hopefully, prevent them from causing even more sprouts to occur. Cheers, Russ

jelly, I can't really tell you anything about the rules for pulling permits. I am not sure if the building department requires you to show up for your permits or if you can send an authorized representative. Essentially, a Construction Manager has a limited power of attorney, so he is authorized to take actions in the homeowner's name, but whether the building department would allow this at all is something I can't answer. I am not even sure they care about the difference between a G.C. and a C.M., in the end construction is being overseen by someone qualified to do so. Furthermore, I am not even sure if they are legally different jobs. It is essentially just a contractually created differentiation. In reality the wording of the contract creates different rights and responsibilities, other than that there may be no distinction between the two. It might be easier to think of it as a third type of construction contract. General contractors can offer "fixed price" contracts, "cost plus" contracts or "Construction Manager" contracts. Again, I really am not sure how some of the legalities work. I know a little bit about agents and their fiduciary responsibilities because I am one. I have a little experience with construction projects, but I am by no means an expert on either. I was more or less trying to keep the OP from making a costly mistake by presenting him with another possibility.

I'm really having trouble explaining this one - no one seems to understand.

There is a difference between a space that you type with the spacebar and a space that you put in as & n b s p ; (no spaces). The spacebar space is just empty space, but the coded space actually has something there, even though you can't see it (like a placeholder). This makes a difference, because in a table, a table cell will not have any formatting if it is empty space. Here's what I am talking about.

The problem is, that on some pages nbsp is not recognized and is treated as empty space instead of "place holding" space, so I still can not created a normal looking, empty table cell.

I understand what you mean about the table appearance. I use nbsp for that frequently. I thought you wanted to see something in that space. Can you link to an example of a table where it's not working? I love debugging!

I found a solution for my problem - seems like nbsp isn't recognized on some pages, so there are other symbols you can use instead explained here.
I tried inserting one of the other symbols and it seems to have solved my problem.

LOL - Here's the scoop - it's not a web page that I set up myself - it's a sports site called eteamz that lets you do as little or as much coding as you want. You can just plug in info, upload pics or files and do it all in their format, or you can sneak in some of your own code. I wanted to do things a little differently than the standard format and set up some of my own tables, links, etc. What I've found is that some normal HTML tags work and some don't. I just thought I'd give the info a try that I found about the alternate nbsp and it worked.
How's that for confusing!

Hmm, the pages have a .cfm extension, which is ColdFusion, of which I know next to nothing. I'm glad you found out how to make it work!

Yea, it's been sort of a pain and I've considered just doing the page from scratch, but there are enough good things about the site that we like for us to stay. I like a challenge and as long as I can make things work, that's what matters! LOL

Well the other way you can make a "space" is to make yourself a large transparent gif. One advantage to this way is you can always control the exact space using "height" and "width" and since it's actually an image you will never have to worry about a code not working.
