A university is grieving

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, AZ is devastated over its loss yesterday of two top faculty members in an airplane crash. The men were practicing aeorbatic maneuvers in separate planes and must have collided somehow. They were top pilots with decades of experience. It's a crushing loss to the school, which starts classes tomorrow (Mon.) They both also leave families and children. It's heartbreaking.

I'm so sorry to hear this. When I first read your heading, I thought you were going to write about the Ole Miss fire deaths. I hadn't heard about this one yet. What a tradgedy.

It will be sad for all the families and friends with two such losses at the beginning of the school year.

Good article for the most part. I strongly disagree with the part that recommends QT for 2 weeks though. QT should be a minimum of 4 weeks (from trusted suppliers) and up to 8 weeks for other suppliers. I would never say that we should not buy koi for a while. I went to a koi show earlier this month and came home with 10 new ones. 5 came from trusted breeders (Quality Koi, Lotus Land Koi Farm, Hammock Koi Farm). Those koi have been in QT for nearly a month now and will go into my pond in another week or so. I also got some koi from dealers that import koi. Those koi are in a different QT a long way from my pond. They will remain in QT for at least another month....maybe longer. We don't need to fear buying new fish, but we need to be VERY careful who we buy from! I would not buy from Ebay (except from Richard Rombold Jan Jonquin koi). I would not buy from any pet store or most water gardening stores. I would not trust the dealer to QT my fish....that is MY job. IF we use our heads, buying new fish can be perfectly safe and won't endanger our existing koi collections.

Hi Susan, I read just a little about the study this morning, as follows: The negative emotions of grief -- yearning, depression, and anger -- following the death of a family member from natural causes usually peak within six months. Grief that lingers for longer than six months "suggests the need for further evaluation of the bereaved survivor and potential referral for treatment," said Paul K. Maciejewski, Ph.D., of Yale, and colleagues. In a bereavement study of 233 mourners, reported in the Feb. 21 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, the Yale investigators also debunked the stage-theory of grief, (my emphasis) which is widely accepted and taught in medical schools. That's as far as I got, but it sounds contrary to what you read, doesn't it? My info came from MedPage Today. I'll have to look into it further, but at first glace I have to say I was surprised at the six-month figure and irritated at the quote. I'm thinking a couple of terms need to be defined. "Natural causes," for instance. Also "family member" (there's a big difference between losing an elderly parent and losing a child) and "grief" itself. Lilo, I agree with you but I have one more question I would like the answer to. My younger son has a no-schedule job, which means that he might work 2 weeks every day at different times and then get a day off unplaned, or he knows when he has time ahead if it. No matter what, if he comes by to help me with an outdoor project, it rains.

What a line-up. What stuck out for me are the Sidney Hook quotes, especially the first quote about teachers and methods. i remember many of my favorite teachers, but don't ask me how they taught. Oh my... oh my ::

That's the exact school Dan had just been accepted to... the letter is still in his room. He was going to Embery Riddle to become a pilot, which was his life's greatest dream. He chose that school instead of the airforce out of compassion for my mother, who lost her first son to cancer. In a way, he fell from the sky, like those two pilots who crashed down. Those pilots are adventure seekers... the ones who love to fly assume the risk. We are left with the tragic outcome. It's sad that those men are gone, however I didn't know them so I don't feel like breaking down and bawling, begging like a little baby... which I did yesterday. I was reading this forum and I'm spending the weekend alone... being completely alone I cried like I never expected to again, I thought the wailing begging grief was over.

Anyway this post also makes me think very much of Dan. Maybe he's met those pilots in Heaven.

"Whoah... Professor So-and-so, what a pleasure, man, you're not going to believe it up here. I would have enjoyed learning from you in life but the earth's atmosphere is positivly *limiting* compared to the space in this joint. Now that we're all on the same level, maybe I can teach you something! Come on, let me show you around. All you have to do is ask, and you can fly. And I'll take you to a special place in the sky, where you can look down on earth and zoom in to your families... and even other people's lives, haha".

oh, how tragic. What a sad day. I guess I have not paid much attent to the news.. actually hardly at all lately.

I do know that there have been so many mid air crashes in recent years that I don't even want to go to the air show ever again. It's so scary for me.

May they rest in peace....

Forgive me if this is prying, but would you like to share what happened to Dan, how old he was? Ignore this question if it is inappropriate.

If Dan had gone to ERAU, maybe he and my son would have known each other!
