My kneecaps are killing me

It started out where my left kneecap hurt when I bent my knee, or walked down a flight of stairs. Today for some reason both kneecaps hurt. I'm in menopause, and have a family history of arthritis. I have a doctor's appointment in a couple of weeks, so I'll find out for sure, but has anyone else gone through this?

I do. I have had the problem for several years now but mine isn't from arthritis. I had an X ray and it showed no problems with the bone, it is just the ligaments and tendons.

I am actually a little better now. I have a better grasp of which exercises are hard on my kneecaps and which help. I am actually able to do squats now with a ball behind my back. I also bought a house without stairs. I just couldn't get better while I was navigating stairs every day. The most important lesson I learned was to never ever let my knees be further forward than my toes AND not to be in a hurry and push on in my exercise regimen before I was ready.

Why don't you call your doctor and see if you can get in sooner?

I am generally opposed to using chemicals except when necessary. I did buy some weed-killer that says it's specifically for "woody vines" or something like that. After pulling up/out as much ivy as possible, I am carefully painting the weed killer on the new leaves when they appear. It seems to be working, as I have not seen much new growth. On one rock retaining wall, I also painted the weed killer on the cut stems when I couldn't pull them out. That seemed to be very effective. Roundup will work and is supposed to be relatively environmentally benign. Everything is relative, of course. It is much more environmentally friendly to just pull off the new sprouts when they appear. It will take longer, but eventually the plants will die if they don't have leaves to make food. I agree we should make ivy illegal.

I should have added...they will drop leaves in cold weather. When it gets warm,they sprout at every node and fill in fast. In pots,its more extreme...but even in ground here in the bay area,they might get a little winter worn. But die? NO. I really think your main problem is you were skimpy on the water to those little vines. Remember,they never develop a huge root system. In ground they climb maybe 4' high here? I have photos of them someplace in Hayward looking great..dark green and full of blooms in ground by some home. They love fertilizer...but when they explode with soft growth? Watch for those neon aphids.

I have wool rugs, and they hold up very well to kids and pets. If you get any kind of pattern, even if it’s light in color, they hide stains. If you don’t mind spending the money for handwoven wool, they are really pricey though, you can keep them forever because they can be cleaned. Otherwise tufted wool works well too. I have a couple tufted rugs that are 10 years old and still have life left. I personally bought a secondhand handwoven wool rug from a very wealthy woman who had had no pets. The rug was in perfect condition...it’s probably at least $2k rug, and i bought it for $150. I had it professionally cleaned when I first bought it, and since then have cleaned it myself every spring with my bissell carpet cleaner. I pick a warm day, powerwash an area of the driveway so it’s clean, and I clean it and then let it dry completely in the sun before bringing it inside. I do the same to my tufted rugs. If you want a trendier rug, that won’t last as long but will be much less expensive, you could just do that as well. There are plenty of options on overstock. An indoor/outdoor rug may work too, but they’re not very soft.

I can’t post pictures lately. I just now took a picture of mine and tried to send it along with a few sentences. When I hit “post” it tries for a minute and then I get this “Oops, something went wrong” message like I always get lately. Since a picture is worth a thousand words but I can’t post one, I’ll try to tell you in less than a thousand words how mine grows… It’s about four feet tall, around two feet wide and very nice and healthy, full of buds. It’s a gorgeous rose with a unique color.

It's tax season and I can't get a day off until after April 17. He wasn't in that week, so I had to wait until the following week.

I had x-rays taken yesterday of both knees. I'll know by next week what they show. My doctor said I should take glucosamine/condroitin. Anyone had any luck with that?

A lot of people have had a great deal of success with glucosamine. It is certainly worth a try. It will take about four to six weeks before you can tell if it is doing any good, so don't give up and stop taking it too soon.

It helps the body repair and replace cartiledge in the big joints like the knees. This takes a while. Don't give up too soon.
