oral diseases? (help please)
Comments (7)I just came back from the doctor because of my mouth. I had some dental work done a month ago and had some places appear in my mouth the next week. The first thought was a reaction to what the new crown was made of but it was the same material as my other crowns. Then I thought it was a food allergy cause I had been eating strawberries and cantaloupe both are highly acidic. Anyway it would appear to be getting better with the mouth rinse the doctor prescribed but never went away. This week my tongue has been very sore and red on the sides. The doctor said it was STomatitis, which is an inflamation of the muscous lining of the mouth. She said some people are more prone to get it and it often shows up after dental work. She has given me another rinse with an antibotic in it. She said though that if I had WHITe spots on the areas that it would be Apthous ulcers and that that would be treated differently. From what the OP described that might be what you have. I strongly suggest you see the doctor as she said that it could become very painful. I know how mine hurts and its not that. I am not trying to diagonse your problem but found it coincidental that she mentioned it. Hope your problem is better by now....See MoreShedding the inside lining of your mouth
Comments (7)It may also be dehydration. I'm a sales rep in Florida and would go from call to call to call, in my hot car, in the hot sun only stopping for lunch where I'd drink soooo much iced tea...I had my boss tell me on one or more occasions that she'd never seen anyone consume as much tea during one sitting as I would. Anyhow, a few years ago, I decided to increase my water intake, and I carry water with me in the car now. I drink at least 10 or 12 eight ounce glasses of water daily, and I know every clean bathroom in my territory!!!! Point being, when I really became habituated to drinking water regularly (before I felt thirst), I noticed those stringy white things gone. And when I do see one, I can honestly say I was not consuming my water....See MoreJust a reminder what not to feed you furry family!
Comments (23)I have to agree about the misguided info on raw diets, however the other stuff seems accurate. I think you have to look at what's species-appropriate and a most likely scenario in the wild - that's where dairy sounds questionable, but if it works for your pet, more power to you. You don't see many dogs and cats milking cows or goats. It 'works' for us (and many argue we shouldn't really have dairy either) because of a much longer history of genetic tolerance, I guess in dairy-heavy cultures, if you got IBS or other sorts of reactions from dairy, you weren't so likely to breed... I firmly believe one of the reasons vets are so opposed to raw diets is the level of funding the pet food industry puts into vet training and resources etc. It would appear to be something of a conflict of interest, and it's documented in the below link. I should also point out that outside of North America, eg Australia, the BARF diet for dogs (raw food) is looked upon very favourably by many vets. I think if you feed your pet garbage, then yes, it may make them sick. The commercial raw food I feed our dog, I would be (not gonna try it though) confident would be fit for humans (if you like ground up bone and organ meat with your chicken) because it's prepared hygienically. Remember also dogs have a much shorted gi tract than us and can eat stuff that really would make us sick, it passes through dogs much more quickly. I hate to admit we started our dog on kibble and didn't change til she developed some big gastric problems, I knew it wasn't the best thing for her, but it was cheap. I don't know if the Kirkland food was implicated in the melamine scandal, but I'm glad we changed - I don't think she would have survived on kibble anyway. If non-cooked food really wigs you out, then your own home-cooked pet food is almost certainly better than commercial dry or wet food, especially the larger scale stuff. Some of those ingredients are just not species appropriate, and some are blaming the increase in carbohydrates in dogs' diets for the higher incidence of diabetes.. Avocados, though, I didn't know about. We did give ours some the other day. A dog in the wild would definitely eat fallen fruit, which was my reasoning. I don't see any prohibition on bananas, which seem to be one of her favourite things.... http://www.cbc.ca/consumers/market/files/health/rawdogfood/index.html...See MoreHave you ever been given the wrong medicine?
Comments (42)Oakley, sorry you're going thru this. As bad as it is, it could have been a lot worse :( Yes, I've been given the wrong medication but even worse, the wrong medication was given to my daughter when she was just a child. But, being the proactive type, I always check meds before taking them. Before the Internet and Google, I used a PDR to reference drugs. It was the same pharmacist both times. I tore into him when he gave my daughter the wrong medication and complained to the store management. This guy seemed to be on too many drugs himself! Found out later there were many complaints against him and soon after he was fired. Being in the hospital is so darn dangerous anymore (well has been for many many years). Superbugs, overworked staff, staff on drugs, under educated staff...you can't leave a loved one in the hospital by themselves. Someone needs to be their advocate. DH has been in the hospital exactly 2x. The first was for a crushed heel. The care (or lack of) and staff was so atrocious I spent most of my time in the administrator's office :o I later filed a complaint with the state board of health and after reviewing my complaints and finding them valid, they zeroed out his bill. The 2nd time was for a double bypass. EXCELLENT care this time around in a much better hospital (Louis and Peaches Heart Hospital in Tyler, TX). Everyone from the janitorial crew to the surgeon and his cutting edge bypass procedure and the sharp as a tack nurturing and caring nurses. You would have thought he was their only patient. I've been taking pro-biotics daily for a few years. There is no doubt in my mind they prevent all kinds of illnesses. A happy gut full of good bacteria is a good thing :) I have a friend that got C-diff in the hospital. Hers became so bad she needed the bowel transplant. My mother also contracted it in the hospital, I think during an oblation for A-fib. She didn't have the bowel transplant but it took her months to get over it....See Morezofie
