Scraping edges of porcelain tile to reveal tile color

I noticed that the edges of my porcelain tile floor in the bathroom are much lighter than the face of the tile. It doesn't bother me in there but it might be an issue in my kitchen where I want to go with a slate-look porcelain and potentially a darker grout.

I just noticed on an episode of "Holmes on Homes" that he had someone scrape the edges of dark brown tile in a kitchen before it was grouted to get rid of the lighter edges. He stated that he was using brown grout and didn't want to see that lighter edge.

Is this a normal procedure? What is the correct tool to use and will my tile guy look at me like I'm crazy if I ask him to do that?
