Colloidal Silver

Anyone using colloidal silver out there? My in-laws swear by it. I've used it a few times but didn't see much of a result. How many days do you use it? or, Do you take it every day as maintenance? Any ideas or suggestions?

I used to wonder about it myself years ago.....I never took it, but knew this old couple who did....I, even then, did not believe it would be good for you.....I have that Quack Watch in my favorites and forgot about it....Excellent Read!! kjaneal, how did the in-laws react to the article?

The contamination/adulteration problem seems to be especially bad with imported ingredients, i.e. from China (and supplement sellers often don't say where their ingredients come from or have any control over their formulation). Here's a summary of some recent cases (and recalls) where supplements were found to be adulterated with prescription drugs. What typically happens is that people get sick, and only then are the products tested and the adulteration discovered.

The issue as I perceive it, is that the this skin condition has yet to be successfully treated. I would expect the doc to refer out to the next level of specialist if he has yet to successfully clear up the condition or often a patient out of desperation gets fed up, stops looking for treatment or hopefully seeks out a specialist who has greater experience or education. I'm concerned S. may have gotten caught in this. I want her to be proactive for herself and continue to seek out answers. With a condition that is so challenging, docs doing lots of research (medical schools) or infectious disease docs often see very challenging issues are likely going to be the best to identify what is going on. Dermatologists though good, do not necessarily have the exposure to very challenging issues. I don't want S to get frustrated and stop seeking treatment. I am hoping to get her seeking the very, most successful medical help possible. I believe she can call the offices to explain her issue to see if the offices feel prepared to treat. If so, she can go back to Derm doc and ask for a referral to a particular office. Patient's often don't know where to begin and don't know the next steps to get the help needed. Not all specialists see all the very challenging conditions out there but don't necessarily want to say " I'm stumped". That's why a patient needs to be highly proactive for themselves and it is amazing that when a patient needs help and seeks it out from top docs, the pathways can be made smooth for the patient to get the help needed. I want S to push forward to get the help she needs, even if she needs to be pushy. I want her to fight for herself as we all should. That's not an attack.

Well they took there sweet time getting out to my house to look at the damage....a week to be exact! Every time I looked out there I got mad, just wanted to cut it all back but had to leave some of the damage so they could see it. I let them know that chlorine gas is no longer permitted on the property! And they agreed to pay for the cost of replacing everything. The manager told me to give him a call and let him know how much it will cost. I explained to him that I grew all these flowers and the gourd vine, and spanish flag by seed and that they are annuals. Also, that with the weather heating up now I will not replant annuals as they will most likely not survive. Anyhow, we'll see if they give me hard time when I call them to give them a number ($) He told me that they also had another employee just kill someones prize geraniums by dumping salt into the flower bed, then he said "I'm learning alot of gardening tips by putting out the fires" Geez! Salt?! Thanks for your advice, Z.

We do still use silver- impregnated dressings for some wounds. Aquacel Ag for an example. If your MIL has breaks in her skin, ulcers or wounds, it is reasonable to use a silver dressing, but you can get pre-made, sterile dressing or ointment to use instead of concocting your own. If the skin is intact, then no need to apply silver I believe. The goal now is to keep the skin intact. Cellulitis is not a surface infection, it is in the tissue below the skin surface. Breaks in the skin allow it to get in (and the bacteria can migrate to that area from other parts of the body too). Keep the skin moisturized and supple with a good lubricant (like lanolin) but not sitting in wet; if she has chronic swelling, ask her doctor about good support hose. There are chronic skin changes that occur with peripheral vascular disease, the skin can become chronically red or purple, rough, scaley, even hard and corrugated, and the lower legs swollen. And, yes, these changes can be in the entire lower leg, not just the feet. It can often look like cellulitis when there is actually not an infection (one clue -- if the redness and warmth decrease or go away when the legs are elevated about the heart, it might not be cellulitis). People who have PVD, who have had cellulitis before, or who are obese are prone to have cellulitis in the legs over & over. I am wondering about the pain, Konrad, does she have it always even when her legs seem to be okay? or do her legs always look like cellulitis? PVD will cause chronic pain, and believe it or not walking is recommended, if she can, but it takes a while to have positive effect. A specialist in PVD (not just any cardiologist or vascular surgeon) is a good idea.

I know it makes you turn a sickly greyish blue

There are NO reliable studies showing it does more than move money into the pockets of the promoters.

Renewing this thread -- my friend has used it for eye infections and right now I have one and may, just may, use it. What I want to mention is this FACT. Recovering from an operation two years ago, a nurse had to come and change my dressing every single day, watching for infection. She had colloidal silver available if an infection started. She wasn't allowed to use it unless she requested it -- but she said it WORKS. We should be suspicious of all drugs, even FDA approved ones. This one works.

I see someone has already mentioned color change. It can also change your skin to purple and it is almost impossible to change it back.

The colour change to purple or blue is with extreme and constant use. Any medication has definite limits on use. The odd thing to me is that I personally know somebody who has cleared up pinkeye several times using this. And the fact that the nurse who changed my dressings said she'd use it if there were an infection in the wound, tells me that it is not ineffective. Nevertheless I will not use it in my eye without a medical go-ahead, which I probably won't get. My concern is that I've had cataract surgery. They used to put silver nitrate in newborn's eyes. Do they still do that? I don't think so.

I do not know about the babies eyes but some doctors use silver nitrate, not the same as colloidal silver, to paint on women's vaginal track if there are long term infections of several types.

I'm going to mention this to my friend who suffers from these infections to the point that she is on permanent antibiotics. She is over 70 and wouldn't be in this shape in my opinion if her husband hadn't been a doctor! Honestly, she had an operation when her bladder prolapsed. Then she had another operation when that one didn't work. All the best medical advice of the day. Now she can't lift anything over 5 pounds, can't walk more than a couple of blocks without sitting, etc. and these constant infections. She's brave but what does she have to lose? Dear jn3344, I know you think you are looking at loopy quacks. This is not the story but I guess it would take a day for me to explain the complete story of where I'm coming from.

Yes - my daughter and I both take it (so does pup for dental probs) NONE of us have turned any color with REGULAR and SAFE use.

How much colloidal silver should you take a day?

Then divide 1,500 by 10 (ppm), which is 150. So at a body weight of 125 pounds, you can safely take 150 drops of colloidal silver per day, for your entire life, according to the Silver Safety Council. That's a little bit over a teaspoonful a day.

I purchase my colloidal silver from a reputable company.The blue man? WAS NOT USING COLLOIDAL SILVER. :) THOUGHT HE WAS...The entire story as presented is a study in blatant misrepresentation. The fact is that Paul has a condition called argyria that turns the skin a blue-gray color. He got this condition by taking his homemade silver compound that was mostly a highly concentrated ionic silver solution.

Thank you for the information. As I said in a previous post -- the NURSE who treated my infected surgical wound, had colloidal silver as a BACKUP if nothing else worked. When she finally finished my treatment -- she came every day for several weeks! -- she left a little bit of the silver with me. She said it was almost always effective. It's so easy to call a nonpharmaceutical 'quakery' -- even after I have said that a nurse used it and it was part of her kit, not something she bought on a streetcorner!
