Thanks Doug, .. epsom salt is a good suggestion. She has no sugar problem but only has one kidney since about 10 years ago. About 3 years ago it started all with swollen legs, then she was on antibiotics, off and on.

Does she have muscle cramps? This is common to elderly people. Gently stretch or massage lower leg muscle to ease the pain. Applying heat to tight muscles or cold may also ease some symptoms.
It may also be Shin splints. This type of lower leg pain occurs when there is inflammation in the tissues and muscles connection along the edge of the shin bone. You can apply cold compress and she can also wear supportive shoes.

Most times there is nothing wrong with a kidney when they take it out but this is a filtering unit of the body and when the tiny blood vessels get plugged they take out the kidney. The little tubes in the kidney will only allow on cell at a time to pass through so what you need is to unplug the vessels. A sign of plugged vessels is high blood pressure because the kidney puts out a chemical to increase the blood flow in the kidneys. If the kidneys are not working you get a build up of fluid in the body and the doctors will start taking about dialysis.
If she has been on a lot of antibiotics it might be a good idea to a probiotic to replace the good bacteria in the digestion system that the antibiotic killed. After the use of antibiotic it is a good idea to restart your digestion system again.

Specialist thinks she has CellulitisâÂÂ, it actually looks like this, [see link]. She is on antibiotic, clindamycin for 3 month, skin has some improvement, doc. was scarred for high dose treatment because of kidney condition.

Has peripheral vascular disease been considered, and an ABI & ultrasound been performed? Would see a cardiologist, as PVD is a blood vessel disease.

We don't think so, peripheral seems to be in the lower foot, her's goes up to the knee.

PVD involves the legs & feet and may be either venous or arterial. I commonly see it involving tissue up to the knees.

If it is caused by bacteria than use colloidal silver spray on the skin and keep it wet. It will clear it up very rapidly.

@d0ug - with that advice, I hope your medical malpractice insurance premiums are paid up. I would be concerned about MRSA, sepsis & septic shock.

I have had cases of MRSA and they talked about surgery and with silver it went away. They used silver for years before drugs became popular and now drugs don't work.

I would like to suggest that you try epsom salt baths and vitamin C (ascorbic acid). You might also want to investigate the side effects of her lyrica prescription a bit more closely.

how would you keep that water solution colloidal silver spray on the leg wet?
I was researching this a bit and it looks like there are lotion with higher parts per million, [around 27], might be a better Joice, one can get it on amazon, [high ratings for all kinds of things].

@d0ug - actually when I was in school, we used silver based products in the burn unit. However, recent evidence/research shows it is not effective - so we no longer use it.

Kidney funtion should be monitored when using it.

If you wet a gauze and place it over the infected area. I used it on a paper towel and then used a stretch bandage to keep it in place.
You can make your own colloidal silver for pennies the cost is in getting the pure silver and distilled water if you make it do not use salt even if some web sites say so because anyone having problems with silver made it that way.
Here is a website for information I am not recommending his machine because all you need is a 12v battery. There are many testimonials. A doctor was at my house yesterday and left with three bottles of silver to run his own tests in the hospital.

The burn units are still using silver. The pharmaceutical have been trying to discredit silver for years. Follow the money web sites like web MD are founded by the drug companies. I have a freedom of information request that was sent to the FDA asking how many people died and allergic reaction they have on record for colloidal silver the reply said they have no cases. NASA uses silver impregnated filters in the air and water on the space station. There has been many clinical studies on silver all showing good results.

The burn unit at my place (major metropolitan level 1 trauma center) and all others I know of are NOT using it.

We do still use silver- impregnated dressings for some wounds. Aquacel Ag for an example.

If your MIL has breaks in her skin, ulcers or wounds, it is reasonable to use a silver dressing, but you can get pre-made, sterile dressing or ointment to use instead of concocting your own.

If the skin is intact, then no need to apply silver I believe. The goal now is to keep the skin intact. Cellulitis is not a surface infection, it is in the tissue below the skin surface. Breaks in the skin allow it to get in (and the bacteria can migrate to that area from other parts of the body too). Keep the skin moisturized and supple with a good lubricant (like lanolin) but not sitting in wet; if she has chronic swelling, ask her doctor about good support hose.

There are chronic skin changes that occur with peripheral vascular disease, the skin can become chronically red or purple, rough, scaley, even hard and corrugated, and the lower legs swollen. And, yes, these changes can be in the entire lower leg, not just the feet. It can often look like cellulitis when there is actually not an infection (one clue -- if the redness and warmth decrease or go away when the legs are elevated about the heart, it might not be cellulitis).

People who have PVD, who have had cellulitis before, or who are obese are prone to have cellulitis in the legs over & over.

I am wondering about the pain, Konrad, does she have it always even when her legs seem to be okay? or do her legs always look like cellulitis? PVD will cause chronic pain, and believe it or not walking is recommended, if she can, but it takes a while to have positive effect. A specialist in PVD (not just any cardiologist or vascular surgeon) is a good idea.
