Hip Replacement

I had a total hip replacement one month ago, still having pain in it if I do not take anti inflammatory pills, and am experiencing groin pain a lot, is this normal or should I wonder about appendix as it is low on the right side? Any tips on recovery would be appreciated for those of you who have been through this. I also am trying to not take pain pills, but have to at times to sleep at night.

I think appendicitis would be pretty darned coincidental, the cause is likely your surgery. But it seems to me you should be more comfortable at one month out - understanding that everyone heals differently and at different rates. Are you sleeping with a pillow between your knees to keep your legs aligned and feet, knees from turning inward during sleep?

It's been 12 years, but it sounds like you are experiencing more discomfort than I had at 4 weeks. Of course I don't know your age or overall health either, so the comparison may be totally irrelevant.

It's a big surgery and the recovery can be a little tedious. But if you have concerns yours may not be going according to norm, please call your doctor and express your concerns. He may want to xray, make sure all is going typically.

Linda everyone heals differently. Ask your doctor or his nurse if it is normal. Are you in therapy? I know a lady that was in rehab hospital for 3 month with a hip replacement and another lady in the hospital for 2 days just with a cataract removal.

I had a cataract removed and I am having more problems healing than I did when I had a kidney removed. I am a patient person but this is really pushing my buttons.

Tomorrow will be a week since surgery! Anyone heard how she is doing? Should be over the worst of the pain & just needing to go easy for awhile but keep moving. Don't know if they send folks to rehab there or not. Anyway hope she is home soon! We are thinking about you Kathy & praying for your full recovery!! Jan

First off.... don't overdo and get healed 100%. Do all the range of motion exercises required. Then if you can not do it one way later..... find a way to adapt the job so you can. I can not squat or bend over so I use poles, cane, buckets/stools of differing heights to help me get up and down. I use a waterproof mat and cushioning to get right down on ground and stay down. You will find a way if you are determined enough to do so. Prayers for a best of the best recovery and movement ability to you.

Don't know if this info will help, but asked a friend who is an orthopedic OR nurse about which type of surgery is preferred by docs for hip replacement. Her answer was that the usual is general anesthesia because as another poster said, the position required for surgery. In her 15 years in the OR with orthopedic surgeons, she's only seen spinal used twice and that was do to the other medical problems that the patient had and their was a safety issue in using general. The surgery can take longer with spinal anesthesia and they do use sedation as well, and in most cases your are sort of sleeping anyways from the sedation. I had spinal surgery a year ago. Surgery was about 2 1/2 hours and I had general. I made sure that the anesthesiologist knew that I was very sensitive to drugs and that I don't want to be knocked out from general till the next day, which has happened to me before. I don't know what they used for the anesthesia, but I was groggily awake about 15 minutes after I was brought into the recovery room, propped up sitting within 45 minutes, never had any nausea, was out of bed about 3 hours after surgery, ate a turkey sandwich, coffee and a salad about 5 hours after and went home 6 hours after I was brought to a room. Never had any nausea or anything else at home either.

I'm a tad over 70 now. I have two artificial hips. Left was December 2004; right, January 2006. Needing to use steroids for asthma ruined my hip joints early. Hips are *easy*, with easy recovery. KNEES seem to be much harder! (Hips move 'back and forth', while knees have to 'rotate'.) Thanks to 'a better world through chemistry' (drugs), this is NOT a painful surgery or recovery. I borrowed a raised toilet seat, walker and cane from our Senior Center's lending closet. I bought a long shoehorn which I still enjoy using. I walked the day after surgery and came home after a couple nights on an ordinary surgical ward. DH was my 'step and fetch it' and was able to nuke frozen dinners for the first few nights. I was walking around the grocery store with him a week after surgery. (How many frozen dinners can a person tolerate? LOL) A visiting nurse came to our (single level) home to do the blood testing while I was on blood-thinners. A physical therapist came to our home to teach me exercises and put me through my paces. (DO them! You will recover faster and have greater strength.) My first hip was somewhat more successful than the second -- but I'm happy with both. I can't imagine NOT doing this so that you can WALK WITHOUT PAIN again. Oh, I just remembered that I was on a plane to Maui shortly after the second surgery. I had wheelchairs at the airports and made sure to walk around a bit in flight to avoid clots, but...no worries! No need for heavy meds after either replacement.

I think I am just getting tired of being down, I had a knee replacement one and a half years ago, and it took a whole year to heal. Guess I am just a slow healer. I have an appt with surgeon on the 15th so will see what he has to say about it. The groin pain is better, not sure what that was all about. Thanks for the replies.

Linda, groin pain is pretty common before surgery - my own wasn't there, doctor said I have a weird nerve distribution pattern ;) - so I wouldn't think totally out of the ordinary after. I'm glad yours is better.

This will all get better, it just takes a while. I think you'll find it goes faster than your knee. Just follow your post op instructions so you don't have any set backs. You've picked a good time of year, Spring isn't here yet, a perfect season to rest and heal :) I chose Jan 29 for my own that year, I couldn't think of any other time it would work for me.
