what to do with cherry armoire if we get a plasma?

I need some suggestions for what to do with a 12 year old, cherry, shaker style, TV armoire (sized for a 27'' tv) once we get a new 42'' plasma. The armoire includes matching bookcases on either side. The bookcases will look great anywhere, but the armoire? What do you think? retro fit for clothes storage in a bedroom? The Wife Acceptance Factor of the plasma is very low right now because it makes her $4,000 amish built armoire obsolete.

The Wife Acceptance Factor is HUGE. I'm a wife, I know :)

Our family room was so cozy and beautiful before the 50" Plasma invaded the picture.

Our solution was to find a really nice cherry wood tv stand so it doesn't have a cold, functional look. It matches the armoir set.

The old tv space in the armoir is now used for a printer, scanner, laptops, ipods, headphones and a ton of other gadgets we use in the family room.

The room is not as Martha Stewart as it used to be but it was a good compromise... he got his big screen and I kept my beautiful armoir.

When we got the 55 inch LCOS we tried to sell our armoire through the company newspaper. When we found that nobody would pay more than a couple of hundred dollars for it we decided to keep it. I almost killed myself getting it down the stairs. It is now full of the kids games in the basement. Heaven help the guy who tries to get it UP the stairs!

I'm thinking bacterial canker. If so, there is no "cure". You can lessen its impact by doing things that improve the tree's health -- basically reducing any stresses on the tree -- and that will lessen the impact of the canker. Your title indicates you are in zone 5... if so, that is borderline or worse for sweet cherries, and that could itself be a major cause of stress that allows bacterial canker to invade. You might want to look at a tart (pie) cherry, which are hardy to zone 4 or even zone 3. There are some new "bush" cherries (8' tall bushes) coming out of a 50-year breeding program in Saskatchewan, Canada that have tart-cherry acidity but have sugar levels comparable to sweet cherries, and are hardy to zone 2.

It makes sense that this could be an item used commercially, like in a hotel. Box store quality wouldn't hold up, but not 'fine' furniture either. I like the piece myself for its functionality, but then again I live in an old house built with no closets. You must be a young thing not to remember the Mediterranean furniture craze of the seventies. Heavy, clunky styling, lots of wrought iron brackets, the 'fake' worm holes. I've always been into antiques, but when we bought our first house my husband wanted the lower level done in masculine decor and we bought mediterranean styled new furniture for it. I still have the tin 'Don Quixote' man, and Spanish-style lanterns. They're so funky and camp I couldn't bear to part with them. LOL Made from recycled refrigerators. I digress, but furniture like that still evokes warm fuzzies of an earlier era, but not earlier enough for people to go looking for it and collecting it like is happening with mid-century modern now. I give it a decade or two and expect it'll happen, however. This looks like a nice, solid, functional and attractive piece, and wish you the best in getting a decent price.

plasma TV and Tivo?

It will work. Most plasmas will have the needed component hook-ups to allow Tivo to play back. I assume that you have the series II tivo. Keep in mind that with a plasma, "old-fashioned cable TV" and a series II tivo, you won't be able to record and play-back any hi-definition broadcasts. You will need to upgrade to digital cable (with the HD service) and get an HD compatible Tivo box. If you don't want to do that, the series II will record and playback shows just like before. Just make sure that the plasma you buy has the needed connections. Just my .02, unless you can get OTA HD signals, buying a plasma with out the HD service is like buying a car and not being able to drive it. If you get a HD compatible set, figure out how you'll get the HD broadcasts either OTA or a service (cable, etc)

I agree with nine7xbam, one of the early posters on this thread - that the LCDs we saw looked way better than the plasma. (Though this was with 40" screens, and I'm not sure whether there's any reason to go to plasma for a bigger screen size.) I think finding a good deal on a Samsung LCD would be advisable. I had no concept of what all the gobbledygook specs meant until I actually went to a few stores and saw sets side-by-side. I could never get the color on one that was supposed to be great from what I'd heard (a Sharp Aquos) to look as good as a Samsung sitting right next to it. Someone pointed out to me that the high contrast ration on the Samsung (something like 5,000-to-1 or 7,000-to-1 I think) was what made the colors look so much better and to me made the picture look sharper. The other thing I walked away with after looking at TVs was that I would rather not have a plasma TV unless it had what's called 1080 resolution (instead of 768). The 768s looked anemic. If you have a BestBuy at all locally or there's one in reasonable driving distance, that's where we saw the best lineup of TVs. They nearly matched a price from an Amazon.com ad I brought in, though said their policy was to only match brick-and-mortar (not 'online') store prices. Of the much larger sets we glanced at there - of which they had a huge variety - I was surprised that the Magnavox brand looked way better to me than others, and among Sonys, the only variety that rivaled the Magnavox were the 'extra black' Sonys - not sure if those were designated XBR or just Bravia. Also, are you sure you need a 50"? The TVs are quite a bit less costly if you get down to 40-42" (and there I'd say, hands-down get a Samsung LCD. If there's more than one that they carry, choose by style and get the highest contrast ratio you're willing to spend for).

Well, depending on how big the TV is that you want to get, and where it's going to be, you might want it on a low console or a high one and that may affect what you decide to do with the armoire.

We found there was not a good selection of not-high-priced nice-looking flat-screen TV stands around. We have a 40" and decided to put it on a pad on top of a cherry dresser in the bedroom. Turned out to be a perfect height for our needs - it's in the corner and actually looks great on that. If you get more than about 40-42" in TV (which is a really nice size), then you get into more complex tailored-to-TV stand needs... and potentially no small amount of extra cost.

All this is to say, if you decide to use some *other kind of furniture than a TV stand* to put your TV on (maybe check Bombay Co. for sales on anything sturdy), then you're still going to need some place to put a DVD player/DVR/DVDs and whatever stereo you own, etc. So if it wouldn't look weird to have the armoir adjacent to the TV, that's where I'd start. The bonus is that you don't have to move that sucker very far.
