missing mom

My mother died March 24th this year in Mount Sinai Hospital, NY. She was only 62. She died on her 77th day in CICU, after elective valve repair surgery performed by Dr. David Adams. It was hard to watch her deteriorate physically. She was with it mentally almost till the end. She cried all the time when she knew that she had bed sores, her kidneys failed, after the lungs, and then she couldn't even squeeze my hand. Towards the end, I couldn't wake her because I knew she was in so much pain. Finally my dad agreed to hand in the previously signed Do Not Resuscitate order and she was gone. At that time it seemed for the best because I didn't want her to suffer any longer.

But now I miss her terribly. I went back to work after 3 months leave of absence, but on Weekends I feel this empty hole in my heart and I cry a lot secretly, because I don't want to upset the kids. Now with the holidays coming up, it'll be especially difficult. Like on my son's birthday, last Sunday, we went to Central Park to row boats and all of a sudden I felt tears swelling. She should have been there - this is something she would have liked to have done - she is missing all of this! She would have loved to come with us. It makes me cry at the weirdest times.

I feel so sad for you. I just lost my sister on Sunday. I keep questioning if I did everything right. I lost my mom when she was 43 to cancer just like my sister. My sis was 51. I still miss my mom, and she has been gone for 37 years. Soon you will be able t0 share funny stories you shared in childhood, and family things you did together with out falling apart. It happens a little at a time. But you will get to that point. Be strong for your kids. Thats all I kept saying for myself. You can and you will get thru this.

Lynn is right - I lost my husband to cancer on April 17th of last year - there will be no 'getting over it', but I can work at moving forward.

I know he wouldn't want me to languish in sadness, so I try to be strong for my stepson. It isn't easy - you're right - he should be here for my stepson's graduation on May 17th, but he won't be - we are all very sad for the loss, but oh, so THANKFUL for the time we had him. He was 54.

Jeff, I don't know of a recipe, but if you will post your question on the GardenWeb's Harvest Forum, they will know if there is a safe recipe. Although you don't say pickled okra, I think that is what you are describing. The okra pickles from the Ball Blue Book have okra, salt, water, vinegar, garlic and hot red peppers, but they also have dill seed. If you don't like dill I think you could leave that out, but personally I think that adds to the flavor. The Ball Blue Book is avaiable at Walmart where canning supplies are sold and is 6 or 7 dollars. It is actually a guide to preserving and has a lot of info on canning, freezing, pickling, etc. If you would like for me to send you the recipe, just email me and I will type it up for you. Also, if it is a safe pickling recipe, with enough vinegar, you can process it in a boiling water bath canner, which is really just a deep pot with a lid and a rack to set the jars on. Okra, without a lot of vinegar, is a low acid food and would have to be canned in a pressure cooker. Do you happen to remember which she used? I don't know if you are a canner, but in case you are not, I need to tell you a couple of things. To be safe, canning recipes must be followed exactly and a safe place to start would be the Ball Blue Book or at National Center for Home Food Preservation which I've linked below. Unsafe recipes are all over the web and in lots of cookbooks and have been handed down in lots of families. Vinegar we use today needs to be 5 percent and that is what you will mostly find today in the supermarket. Our grandmother's vinegar may have been twice that strength. I guess what I am saying is this, just because no one died, doesn't make the recipe safe. I hope you find a recipe for your mother's okra, but I hope you find one that is approved as being safe. Nest change is done. I am happy to report that all 5 babies look great. No evidence of parasites on them, no peck marks, they are well. Pop has accepted the nest change and has allowed the last bunch of babies to continue to help feed. Don't know if the new Female is still around but Pop not calling anymore, hope he has put her in her place. I can find no evidence on what happened to Mom. I just know she died with her babies. I believe she died on the night of Friday the 29th. I don't know if it means anything but that is the night they started shooting big fireworks off. Sweet beautiful girl...RIP. Prayers for your babies!

Since I am not you, I can not know what you feel. I can only at best offer my sympathy. I am a practical person and that colors the sdvice that I give. I lost my mother 10 years ago, but for me and my sister, it was not as traumatic as it could have been. My mother was 95 yr old and she had expressed that she was ready to go. Her life's work was done and it was time to move on. She had a circulatory problem and had blacked out and fallen a couple of times at home. She refused to let me take her to the doctor to explain her malady. (I lived 350 miles away and was visiting her.) She confided in me telling me that she had prayed for the Lord to take her away some night in her sleep. With that knowledge, her passing was easier for my sister and me. But the feeling of a loss of a loved one was there anyway. Years ago, we helped my mother through the loss of her husband. We, too, felt the loss. My experience says it is natural to have a grieving period that may last a year or more. What you feel is likely "Normal" for you and your circumstances. Those dreams is your mind working its way through a maze of thoughts. Do not be alarmed or distressed about those, but observe and learn. Please do not take on a load of guilt. The content of dreams can be quite ramdom, but someday, you may have a dream that resolves all issues and when you do, you will awake with relief. And then again with time, the issues that trouble you may merely fade to insignificant specks. This is a vulnerable time for you, so delay making decisions on your mother's estate for items that can wait. The best thing you can do for yourself is to give you psyche time to heal.

You have me sitting here in tears. For your loss, and as a reminder of mine. Your mom's situation sounds so very similar to my mom's. She passed after a very risky heart operation. There was no choice but to try since my mom had had 5 heart attacks previously. It was our only hope. But her kidneys and lungs were shot, and the heart never really recovered. I cry every day and it's been since Jan.30 2006. I miss her so much. It is still hard to find joy in anything. And my mama was blind for the last 15 years of her life (She passed a month before age 69) and that was so hard for me to accept as well.

Keep an open mind about signs from your mom. Please. I have had some amazing signs, and it helps to know she is on the other side and looking out for me.

The latest was just a few days ago. A storm was blowing in. Half of the sky was dark and half was bright blue. A big large cloud churned overheard...churning and churning. I looked up to see my mom's face....and then she was holding a little baby...I think it was me! It made me smile and cry at the same time!

Hold onto the ones you have, especially your kids.

Remember your mom when she was healthy and happy and try not to dwell on the last part of her life with the pain and sickness. That does no good and she wants you to be happy. We will all be reunited with our loved one in due time.
