Now I've just lost my mom

I lost my dad in August, 2004 and now I've lost my mom. She was my best friend. We just buried her last Monday and since 3 of the 5 grown kids live far away, we had to go through her and dad's things. That was an experience in itself. Now I'm home and I'm just so sad. I called her every day. My neighbors brought me some food yesterday and I caught myself wanting to call my mom to tell her how nice my neighbors were. I wasn't "over" my dad, and now I've lost her. I just don't know what I'm going to do. Just wanted all of you to know.

I'm so sorry to hear that, Joanie. You've had a lot to deal with all at once. I know well that feeling of wanting to pick up the phone and call. Since that's not possible, how about writing her a letter? It might feel good to do that.

I'm sure your wonderful relationship with your mom was a huge blessing to her, and gave her much happiness.

Joanie, I'm so sorry about the loss of your dad as well as your mom. I lost my mom June of 2004, and I often wonder what it will be like when I lose my dad. I dread it, yet I know that I will most likely have to deal with it.
Susan's suggestion about writing your mom a letter is a good one. I still think about calling my mom sometimes also. That will probably linger for us both for a long time.
You must have been a very good daughter. That is something that you can always be proud of and be grateful for in the years to come.

I'm the guy from SC pnbrown was referring to. In 2002, my father and I built a road worthy vacuum from an old 2-horse trailer and an 8HP Agri-Fab vacuum. I attached 6 feet or so of PVC pipe to the end of the flexible hose as a nozzle that I could hold. I soon found that it was easier to lay the nozzle on the ground and rake to it instead of moving it around because it would get jammed pretty easily if it was overwhelmed. I used it for a few years and then moved to another place where they bag their leaves, so I quit using it. I still have it. It should still work with a little tinkering. I'm in the process of upgrading, though. I have found that I have a tendency to bring home plastic bags and dump them whole and then they turn into a mess in the spring that I don't want to clean up. I do dump a lot when I get them home, but when I haul 200 at a time and head back out for more, I can't dump them all on the spot. I got over 1000 one year a few years ago. i still have plastic bag pieces all over the place when I till in certain areas. The upgrade... Same vacuum mounted on the rear of a 16 foot flat bed trailer with 6 foot sides and a conduit top covered with a heavy tarp. That's the plan anyway. I calculated it and with 4 foot sides, capacity would only be double what I had in the horse trailer. Maximum possible, that is. Not that I ever filled it that full, but it did come close on occasion. I have acquired the trailer frame and need service on the electic brakes and other wiring. And safety chains and a jack. And a tray welded on the rear for the vacuum to mount on. Once I get that done, I can add the bed of 2x6's and build the sides. There are stake pockets on the front and sides. I'll use metal roof pieces to make the sides solid. Then I'll cover it and give it a go. I drive a F-450 with an 8x12 dump bed on the back. So it's not great on fuel. Having a larger trailer means more collection per trip. More efficient (yeah, right). I have a couple of sub-divisions close enough that don't bag their leaves that make it worthwhile enough for me to visit. I live in Pendleton (Anderson county) about 2 miles from the county line (Pickens) where they vacuum all leaves in the city of Clemson. They will deliver vacuum truck loads of leaves to folks in the Clemson area if they are in Pickens county. Otherwise, I think they haul them 20 miles to the landfill site where they are composted. They will not deliver them to me even though I have offered to pay something for them. A vacuum truck load of leaves is worth paying for. So if they won't bring them to me, I'll take them. I got the funny looks from folks when I'd pull up with the horse trailer and start sucking. But quite a few folks would come out and talk to me about it. I can't wait to unveil the new and improved version. Probably next fall. I'm already popular with the baggers in Pendleton. They see me coming and some actually help load them. One old guy was complaining about how expensive the bags are, so I brought him a bunch back one time. Nice ones like he was using. What I really want is for some of the folks that are putting out bunches of bags at a time to quit using them altogether and let me suck them up. They'll like not having to bag them and I'll like getting clean leaves. Often pre-shredded and mixed with grass clippings! I love leaves! Hi Wendy, I came across this site and just wanted to get in touch with you because your experience sounds a lot like mine. My mom passed away about 6 weeks ago very unexpectedly. I'm 18 and the night before I was supposed to leave for college something went wrong with her heart. My dad and I did CPR on her until the ems team came. After working on her for about 45 minutes, all the way to the hospital, she kind of had a pulse. They finally kind of got a heart beat going and hooked her up to all sorts of machines. She couldn't hear me, see me, talk to me, feel me...she couldn't do anything. She had gone too long without oxygen to her brain, and the damage was irreversible. 3 days later we had to make the decision to take her off life support. My aunt and grandfather wanted to be with her and they said it took less than two minutes for her to go. I was so close with my mom and it's so hard without her. I was always her little baby. On her last day in the hospital, the nurse moved her over in her bed so I could cuddle with her one last time. I'm at college now, but the only reason I was able to come is because my boyfriend is here and he is a huge help to me. I haven't been home yet so it feels like she will just be there waiting for me when I go home this weekend. I'm so scared for everything to actually start to click in. It used to be so hard for me to be away from her. I couldn't even go to a two week camp one summer in high school without actually getting sick because of being so homesick for her. Now I have to live the whole rest of my life without her. Sometimes I feel guilty wondering why it happened the night before I was supposed to leave. I feel like I worried her because she knew how much she was going to miss me. She was the most amazing person in the world and was an incredibly mommy to me and my brother. I still can't quite grasp the concept that she isn't here anymore. It makes me so mad that I didn't get to say goodbye to her, or at least that I know she could hear. But I guess that's a good thing because I don't think she ever knew anything was going wrong while it all happened. We never saw her panicking or in pain, which was a blessing. Okay, sorry, I jut got typing and couldn't stop. I guess I haven't really told anyone all this stuff until now, and I don't even know you, but it just helps to get it out. I just wanted to write to you because I know you've gone through a good portion of the grieving process by now and I thought you might have some advice or something like that. If it was anyone else who had died, it would have been so much easier for me because I would have just gone to my mom for help. She always knew exactly what to do to help me. Just like someone said earlier on this post, I feel like no one will ever be able to love me as unconditionally as my mom did. Oh sweetie, that was your mom alright, showing you she is still there in spirit with you and always will be. I am so sorry about your mom. Nothing I can say will make it better or bring her back. I wish I could perform that miracle for you. Know she will always be with you and in your heart. My mom's been gone just over 2 years and I still can't believe it. It is so far from being 'real' in my mind even still. She gave birth to me and was the closest spiritual person to me in my life. It just sucks. Please take care of yourself. Duane

it's so gorgeous, isn't it? i will make a few changes for my home, such as we are considering leaving off the center doors, since this will be the main dish cabinet. also i may add lower cabs and use my antique marble slab as a counter, with shelves above it for the dishes. i already know what i'll be putting in those shadow box side doors, and it will not be mono chromatic. still, the doors and cabs will be a cream colour to go with the marble, and the preimeter cabs around the kitchen will be darker with a lighter counbter. i love jerusalem gold limestone and would love to use that for counters, but the fragility of it worries me. i'm very pleased with my design, now to work on colours and materials--the fun stuff!! thanks for your encouragement, i must elarn to upload pics--it's the terminology which baffles me.

It's tough when both parents are gone, isn't it? People who have always, always been there..and now they are not. The world just isn't the same any more. But just remember, Joanie, that even though they are gone, you have your love for them still in your heart, and you will always have that.

Thank you for all of your words of comfort. I know I was a good daughter and that we had something special. But I also have regrets - that I didn't do more - when she was sick and well. Life will never be the same. I will never be the same. I have changed - I have gone through the depths of grief and am trying to work my way back to ??? Not sure - some sort of peace and normal I guess. I'll miss her always and still need her, even though she's gone.

Hi Joanie,

I really do know how you feel. I lost both my parents in two days. I was in the middle of treatment for cancer and I really felt like I needed them so badly at that time. My husband, daughter, family and friends were all terrific, but there is just something about your parents that is so special. I still (after 4 years) sometimes think of calling them in an absentminded moment. But believe me, it is gradually growing easier. No matter what....you will always have them in your heart and your memories. Nothing or nobody can take that away from you. Keep strong! My thoughts are with you.

I can't imagine what you went through Dee. I know I am blessed to have had such wonderful parents. I just felt like I wasn't "over" my dad, and now my mom. What a hole I have in my life. SHE is the one I called to tell what's new with my kids each day. I miss her so much. I spent the weekend feeling sorry for myself, feeling like I have no one else and that no one cares. I must have cried all day yesterday. I just don't know what I'll do. We have moved several times and I have lost contact with close friends so I'm really feeling isolated. I had become so dependent on my mom for her love and support. Now she's gone. I sure hope this gets easier but I don't see how.

Joanie, I just wanted to say that I am so sorry for your losses. Sounds like you had the same type of relationship with your mom that I had with mine. It will be three months this weekend since my mom passed away. I miss her desperately.. so many things have happened in my life in the last three months that I have needed her for and wanted to share with her. I know exactly how you feel. I think of mom at least a hundred times every day and night - she was the rock that kept me grounded. It is a huge loss. People do care what you are going through they just don't understand how truly deep it goes. I understand because I am living it. Just take each day as it comes, cry when you want/need to. It doesn't really get 'easier' as life goes on, you just fall back into it.

Thanks so much for everyone's words of comfort. And thank you Dee for the personal e-mail. The support here means so much. Today is my birthday, it's bad enough to be (cough, cough) 40, but I realized this morning that last year on my birthday I had both of my parents, and this year I have none. I say that, and it is true, but I know it sounds childish. I really, really miss them both. I wasn't able to mourn hard for my dad because my mom was such a wreck afterwards - until she died. Now I am mourning them both. But I am okay today. Better than I thought I would be. I don't want to spoil what my family wants to do for me by being so sad. And I know my parents wouldn't want me sad. AND I know they are together, and that really brings me comfort. Thank you all for listening. It means so much to have somewhere to go with all of this.
