What to do w/ excess toys?

I'm cleaning out our kids toys. They have way too many even w/ the one in one out rule (started that too late I guess!).

What can I do w/ all of th eextra toys that are no longer played w/?

I tried a few charities and they said that they don't take kids toys or furniture any longer due to recall issues. That makes sense but it seems like a sin to throw away all of these perfectly fine toys. Most of them aren't electronic, lots of little people and stuff but just crazy amounts. Obviously I'm tossing any broken ones or those not in great condition.

Thoughts, ideas?

I'm drowning in toys!!!!!!!!

I know Goodwill takes toys because I see them there for sale all the time.

The churches in my area take them also and distribute them to families in need.

Toys go fast at rummages sales here as do children's clothing.

You could also just ask around with your neighbors if anyone is interested or know someone who could use them.

Plantermunn What a stroke of luck to find at a garage sale, huh? And it sounds very much like something I could use. I'll keep an eye out for one. And Ezzirah.. girl, I NEED a couple of those tools they have there. Thank you! When I get paid, I'm looking forward to getting me three items. I thanked them profusely and asked them for a catalog hoping they have more, but no, just what's online. I did have a chance to peruse the accessibility forum. I really love the spirit of some of those gardeners have - especially those in chairs. Wow! There I found a few more ideas, but not as good as these were. :) Mostly, I was reminded to plan ahead while building this garden of mine; keep things level and plan for accessibility with crutches or wheel chair. It would be pathetic to build it and need to restructure it later. So, I should start now. Mostly, I think the raised beds (3 foot or more) got the best reviews for accessibility.

(hijack, sorry warmfridge -- buffalotina, thanks for that input and the kind words. I wish I had really considered sillites, but didn't think I wanted extra holes in the granite. And I really thought plugmold would be thinner and less obtrusive. It was a shock, to be sure, but kind of like the kid who asks for a pet giraffe and then says just kidding, can I get a dog? and the parents think a dog is not so bad... that's how I felt when they eliminated the junction box. It suddenly became something I could live with. They will also be painted, and I think you are right, they really don't show up that much from a distance.) warmfridge, if I'm reading you right, the main issue is cutting the tiles, right? I hear the grout issue too, but I don't understand if it's cutting the tiles, leaving raw edges, that will create the need for more grout, or something else. IOW, if you had a different size tile or a liner that didn't need cutting, would that work? What kind are they, and what are the dimensions?

Thanks, great ideas! I do have bookshelves off the living room that I have my cookbooks in now, but it would be more convenient to have at least some of them in the kitchen and I do like the look of cookbooks in the kitchen. We also don't really have a pantry so using that shallow space is also a good idea. Desertsteph, we have planned a pet "bar" in a small room between the kitchen and powder room, along with the MW, just as you have! One question, do you have any secrets for preventing water drip damage to your nice wood floor?

Andi....unless its water bubbles from the water being stressed...its excess detergent. .detergent residue..it is going to require one of two things to set off suds..surfactants, (detergent or soap) one of these will need to be in the rinse for there to be suds which means proper rinsing was not established. Some of these sites amaze me with what they put out there. I disagree with them Andi, what do they think suds in the rinse Is a sign of? Pure malarky. As for diaper washing, you know the routine since you've done it..a cool prewash with a bit of detergent than a HOT HOT HOT wash followed by extra rinsing. There is no way a surfactant free detergent is going to clean and remove the ammonia from dips..which will cause the poor babys skin to blister...probably more so than detergent residue. ANDI.....a BABY!!!!!! How absolutly wonderful!!! Congratulations. When will this miricle arrive? Oh, I'm so happy for you and that husband of yours. By the way its a good time to stock up on STPP.....in the next to last rinse for the diapers it will sequester the hard water minerals, any soils remaining, and any detergent residue and prevent them from redepositing onto the diapers. LOL I'm so excited ....a new Baby for our Andi.

I realize you said you've tried some charities, but have you tried some of the womens shelters or maybe even the local church? Seems like there are so many families right now in need that would really appreciate having them for their kids.

When my eldest DD moved out she left behind a lot of quality stuffed animals she'd gotten from old boyfriends. Some still had tags attached and I had no luck donating them until I was referred to a church that had a foster childrens program. The kids have to leave home usually with nothing and they gave the kids toys. So it might be worth checking with some churches.

Otherwise CL is an option.

I called around some more and I found a Goodwill a few towns away that will take them.

I'll try a few churches in the area but honestly the stuff has just got to go! Looking for shelters in our area (and I'm sure that they are here) are impossible to find. Our towns not too organized!

When I picked DS1 up from school and told him that toys had to go he totally agreed. He said 'There's too many anyways and I can't find my favorites' so he's all on board! Whoo Hoo!

I can't go through another yard sale and CL is the biggest PIA in my experience. Just not worth my time and the trash e-mails that I get from scammers when I post is ridiculous.

Also Citydata's forum; in the state section.

I wish you were closer, I know a few moms that could use toys.

Wow--depending on what kind of little people stuff you have I would buy it from you! The little people things are so cute.

I have a neighbor that has a child a couple of years younger so I always offer clothes and toys to her first. I then take the rest of the stuff to a church based day care center and ask them if they know of someone in need that could use it and they've always said yes.

I would pass DD's things on to friends and one co-worker in particular who had a DD. How about safe womens shelter?

I donate to the goodwill. It's funny to be in there (I love to shop at GW as well heh heh) cuz DS will say "That's just like my XXXX" ummm cuz it is silly boy. So sometimes I end up buying one or two back but he's still at the age he does not notice if something goes missing (he really has too much). I kind of see the GW as a toy rental shop for us...I find a great toy, he plays, we donate it back...normally for under 5 :) I just purchased an electronic piano for him there for 3.99 that originally (still available new) sells for over 100 bucks. I love bargain toys!!!
