New kitty, first vet's appointment, scared

A few weeks ago, DH and I rehomed a 14 month old flame-point Siamese.

Her name is Arwen and we just adore her. She's never been spayed and is now in heat. We have a vet's appt. at 3:00pm today.

Her personality is very kitten-like. We will not be getting her declawed and feed her Wellness. With all the latest sentiment of having our feline friends raised as close to naturally as possible (raw diet, no declawing, etc.) please share why an indoor cat should be spayed.

I've read that it prevents certain types of cancer, but also that 1 in 500 die from the procedure (article on vet's website).

Why is declawing, mutilation, but an invasive procedure like spaying, almost de rigueur?

Thanks and PS to Shee if you read this...hope that Gizmo is doing great! :)
