Gift ideas?

Our grandson will soon be 5 and we want to give him a gift that he can enjoy over and over again. He loves to take things apart and reassemble them (not always ending up the way the item started). He is gregarious and enthusiastic about most things and we want to foster his curiosity and problem solving tendencies. We appreciate all ideas and suggestions. Thanks!

Look for toys appropiate to his age. At that age, my GK's liked floor puzzles. Books, puzzles, duplos (like lego), poster paints. If he likes reading etc, I gave my GK's a subscription to Big Back yard and then Ranger Rick. (from National Wildlife ( You can go to a library to see what kind of children's magazines are avaiable. this is something he can receive each month and they really look forward to this.

Our grandson is now 9 but he was introduced to K'Nex at a family wedding - a small kit to build a truck in his treat bag (all the kiddies got a treat bag to see them through the long and boring speeches). Well he built that kit quickly with the really excellent directions - pictures & little text. And since then he has devoured the new kits - bigger and better - as they come out. Last years kit was the screaming roller coaster complete with action parts. Start small and if he does not like it - not a great loss.

We had our neighbor gift us with a book of prepaid car washes at the local automatic car wash place after they had their driveway torn up and redone. They felt bad about the amount of dust... it was a lot... and the gift of car washes was very much appreciated. But they didn't do that for the whole street, our house caught the brunt of the dust and our side garage faces their driveway and our van was out because hubby was doing several days worth of work in his wood shop and they felt bad about that. (His wood shop is in the garage and to spread it out we have to remove cars, but we park in the garage most of the time and his tools get packed like a puzzle) We certainly didn't expect anything though, nevertheless, it was very thoughtful.

I thought of two (budget friendly) gifts I received last year that I can recommend. 1. Hamilton Beach 3 in 1 egg cooker $20. I use it quite often for hard-boiled eggs and they peel perfectly every time. When I hard boil eggs in a pan, it's hit or miss as to whether or not they will peel easily. 2. WIlliams Sonoma Logo Stripe Dish Towels $25. They're Turkish cotton and after using them for almost a year they have not shrunk or stained. My old dish towels always got blotchy after a bit, but not these.

I needed one more thing for my 16yr old DGS, who doesn't play football, and after watching videos I knew it would be fun for him and DS1. It arrives deflated so I bought an air pump for balls. Passback Official Composite Football, Ages 14+ Video below

Leapfrog makes wonderful interactive toys that both teach and entertain, and they are for all age groups. You can get a good idea of what they have at this site.
