Oak Everywhere but Cherry in Kitchen

I am remodelling a 50s ranch. I am redoing the kitchen and have painted the cabinets white and will get new appliances ( probably stainless). (The room is about 12x12.) The new Formica is grey with flecks of white and yellow. I have a white pendant light with a yellow stripe over the white sink and a schoolhouse light in the main part of the kitchen, also with a yellow stripe. The walls are a light yellow. I had always planned on having cherry floors installed just to give the room a warm look. The rest of the house, every room, is oak ( light natural, but yellowed a bit from age.) Will cherry stained a medium color (that will match the oak, not clash with it) look okay or will cherry be out of place in an all oak house? There is no doorway between the kitchen and dining room, only an archway. There is a door leading to a hallway on the other side of the room. Thanks.

Hi, This is soo funny. It is almost like de ja vus because this is almost my exact same situation. I also have a 50's ranch and am trying to decide on a floor for my kitchen(currently an old ugly vinyl). I will also be re-painting my cabinets a fresh white with stainless appliances. I have already replaced the hardware with brushed nickel and a few appliances. I hope to eventually replace the counter tops with granite and I may go for a stainless steel tile back-splash (still deciding). I also have oak hardwood in my adjoining living room and hall, but was considering some form of Brazilian cherry for my kitchen floor. I have an additional problem that the living room is the old fashioned real hardwood and the hall is a prefinished softer floor installed later (but similar in color - oak). I am considering a pre-finished floor (like Bellawood maybe ) or a laminate that looks real for the Kitchen, if I can find a good one. I also wonder if that will look weird and am looking on advice for a durable inexpensive brand.

I have included a link to an older picture of my kitchen when we first moved in. I have changed some things since then (little by little I guess). The walls will be a combo of Kilim Beige and Latte. I now have a cherry dining set.

I went with the cherry in the kitchen. I am not totally happy with it. Until I get the adjacent oak refinished, the two colors do not go together that well. I am going to go natural with the oak, so it should work out. I can send a pic if you like. I also went with brushed nickel hardware on the white cabinets. Your colors sound like they will really look good when it is finished. I know that latte looks good with cherry. And granite would go great, as would stainless.

Something else you might wish to consider- I don't know if that is a dog or cat in the pic, but prefinished wood has gaps in between the planks. If you go with unfinished and they sand and finish at the time of install, you get more of a continuous surface.

the slate inlay is more of a practical thing as the two doors are heavy traffic doors leading to the backyard... those doors will get a lot of snow/wet/whatever pulled in from shoes.. i am a bit worried about that being on the wood floor so thought the inlay would just be a landing area for the wet/muddy/etc stuff.. thou i agree that putting it on the step might be a bit too much.. i was going to run the floor up/down vs. left to right.. that way two of the 3 main entrances to the room will view down the strips of wood vs. across the strips if that makes any sense.. it seems to me that it would help make room feel deeper in that direction.. anyone else have thoughts on which way the wood should run?

I used General Finshes gel stain in java, but they also have a cherry gel stain: http://www.generalfinishes.com/retail-products/oil-base-wood-stains-sealers/oilbase-gel-stains I followed celticmoon's directions - they are very good. I think it would look nice. I love light counters with white cabinets. You could always do your island in a dark color to break up the white. Maybe in an expresso or a dark cherry or even gray. Personally, with those cabinets and that floor (both beautiful) I would go very light so as to avoid brown overload. I do not have specific recommendations, though. I don't know granite well. I did look at pictures of White Princess mentioned above and it looks a bit cool for your woods.
