Teresa_mn growing ginger?

I would like to grow some ginger and have a few Q. Did you just plant a knob of root in the garden or start it in a pot? How long does it have to grow before you can use it and do you have to did up the whole plant to harvest the tuber? How big does it get and are the leaves ornamental? Could you please post a photo? Thank you I know you are starting your remodeling and very busy. Patty

Patty - I bought two ginger plants at the Farmer's Market. However, my friend Loretta has been growing it for several years. Her Hmong DIL selected some roots at the grocery store and planted them. They take about 8 to 10 months to harvest. But once the plant gets growing it just keeps on going. I harvested one of the plants to share with friends and brought the other in for the winter.

Outdoors they prefer filtered light. Mostly mine were in the shadow of some tomato plants on my deck. Toward the end of the season as the tomato foliage thinned the ginger was getting more sun. Some of the foliage turned brown.

I am at home sick today and I cannot find a photo. I did post one on another thread here recently. I can't remember which thread. Does anyone else remember?

I just remembered I had photos on my phone. Here is one plant looking a little ragged toward the end of the season.

I don't have photos of anything. I guess I must be more verbally oriented than visually oriented, because I never even think about taking photos. Partly, too, it is because when I am outside, I am busy literally from sunup to sundown and barely have time to eat. Maintaining a large property is hard, and I exhaust myself during the spring planting and summer harvesting season. If I had it to do over again, I'd buy 2 or 3 acres and not 15. If my criunum even bloomed last year, I somehow missed it and I don't know how. We are in an ongoing moderate drought here with drought conditions since August 2007, and I didn't water the veggie garden much last summer as the drought progressed because the water bill was getting outrageously high from all the watering around the home landscape. My crinum is on the northwestern edge of the cottage border that surrounds the veggie garden, so it gets afternoon shade and is happy there. Unfortunately, I don't spend a lot of time at the end of garden unless I'm harvesting corn, beans or squash from the "Three Sisters" garden. The four crinums I planted this year are closer to the house where I can see them daily. There are in a bed on the east side of the house so they'll actually get a little more sun than my original crinum does down by the garden because it is shaded by trees that are west of the garden. I guess if I don't get good blooms from the original crinum this year, I'll move it up closer to the other ones this fall. The foliage was up and thick and lush and a very late freeze froze it back hard a couple of weeks ago.

Two months ago a tall plant in a coffee can was given to me. I repotted it, no visibly enlarged rhizomes at the time. Now I see what I imagine to be two tops of rhizome enlargements. What is a typical length of time from none to suitable for harvesting?

Are the canes long, but they fall over, or do they never get tall? Are they in full sun or full shade? Are they moist or dry?

It is either lack of humidity and/or too little water. Also check inside the tips for caterpillars or spider mites, etc. Anything that could damage the tip can keep tge leaf from unfurling.

Check out the ginger forum for additional information. I have ginger plants in my back yard, but they are ornamental and I grow them for the flowers. The ones I have get to be about five feet high (so far). The blue ginger only gets to be about 3-4 feet high.

A lot of ginger flowers are very fragrant, and you can cut them to bring them inside and they will make a nice fragrance in your house.

The Ginger Forum ....... who knew? I checked it out. Apparently not many people know. It's not a very active place as many of the posts are from 2007. There are newer posts also. But it's not like the info provided on growing the plant is going to change.

This summer I will have at least 4 large pots of ginger. I hope to make gingerale. I gave a co-worker some ginger last fall. She made gingerale and it was delicious!
