Grandmothers - Can We Talk?

Are you a long distance grandmother? Are you a reluctant grandmother? Are you an overjoyed grandmother? Are you a fun-loving grandmother? Are you a babysitting grandmother? Are you a traveling grandmother? Are you a reading/teaching grandmother?

I am just beginning my grandmother years and am torn between being "an old fogey" having raised my children in the ancient times of the 70's and 80's and an intelligent well-read advocate of raising happpy/healthy children in the 2000's. My daughter looks to me for advice and direction, yet, at times, looks at me like I am crazy. What is your experience? Can you relate? Can we talk?

Denora, I raised my sons in the 70's and 80's also.
I am traveling, babysitting (one day a week,(the ones close by), sometimes for a week with the 3 who live 100 mi from me.
I guess I do teach, like lots of excitement with things of nature, have started really talking science,(space station, shuttle etc.) with my 5 year old grandson.
My 3 year old gd is always repeating something I've said, got a memory like an elephant.
One thing I had sons, so I am wondering if its a little different when its your daughters children. I do try not to step on toes, I can remember how I felt with my mil.
Anyway I am an overjoyed gm for sure. Ladieg

I have two daughters and one son (29, 27, 22). My son, to this day, is much easier to deal with, although my daughters are friendlier than when they were teens. My granddaughter is only 6 weeks old, but is already displaying quite a determined personality. I have warned my daughter. This time around it makes me laugh just as my mother laughed when my first daughter started giving me fits. (she raised 3 daughters and 2 sons). My mil was 3000 miles away, fortunately, because we had our moments when visiting. I guess patience and holding one's tongue will be the best. I am very excited about sharing the world when my gd is 5 as your gs (or even 3) - Zoo, Beach, Parks, etc.

The longer the cotton fiber, the more lasting the cloth. A longer twisted cotton fiber can't shed off pieces as easily as a short one does. These fibers make less lint and so don't get thin as fast. The best is linen followed by the cottons- Egyptian and then prima. All are wonderful and soft. I prefer linen but linen towels are not loopy they are flat like heavy tablecloths. Linen is naturally antibacterial and absorbs more water than cotton and dries in the air faster than cotton. A lower thread count sheet is cooler in summer than a higher thread count sheet. Try it and see. A lower thread count sheet lasts fine if the fibers are long. My linen 250 sheets have 20 years at least and are so soft now. I don't bleach them. If you want to whiten discolored linen try oxyclean. But for occasional brightening, lay them out over grass for a day in summer. Someone said something about chlorophyll.....I don't know why it works for both linen and cotton. Chlorine bleach is a killer. It breaks down fibers so they shed off lint. They become thin and brittle and eventually tear apart. Did you know that material wealth used to mean the linens a household had? Women spent years as children spinning and weaving and decorating sheets, towels and other household textiles to go into dowry chests. They were meant to last. The softest and longest lasting was linen. Ancient Egyptian linen still survives. Linen is the choice fiber for both the Vatican and the White House. Cotton is American because we don't have the right climate for flax like Belgium and Ireland. Still the looms that handle the finest thinnest cotton thread are in Switzerland and Italy I think. The beautiful cotton men's shirts are all woven there. I put traditional cotton loop towels out for guests because that's what they expect, but I use my old soft linen for myself. I sew it the size I want and it's going to outlast me.

Thought some more about this overnight. My dad was a dentist. Also built his own dental office. Corian everywhere. I have health issues, including a couple of surgeries. When you go to the doctor, or the hospital, Corian everywhere. Until I read this thread, I never really thought about why. I worked in a hospital 40 years ago, if I recall correctly, stainless steel was the thing then. It's all about keeping things clean. We have hard water, as do most people in the USA. Did not realize that hard water affects stone. I have never cut directly on a countertop, it will ruin your knives. I have never put a hot pot on a countertop and have no desire to do so. We do put hot pots in the sink, pour boiling water in the sink, so I am going to need a steel or enamel sink. Want a farmhouse sink anyway. This has been a very thought provoking discussion. Learned a lot.

If it was my house I would begin by dropping a soffit and wall from the ceiling to create a "niche" on either side of the fireplace, and create the opportunity for a true "built-in" cabinet of one design or another Finally, even though the space to the right of the fireplace is much smaller than the one to the left, I would definitely place something there so that the space doesn't appear to simply be overlooked or forgotten Yes, these two statements definitely help -- thanks. I looked at a bunch more pictures, and I understand what you're saying about making this area look actually "built in" ... and while not so many people seem to do this, I do like it better. Bpath, I appreciate the pictures, but after staring at them for a bit, I think that's too much stone for me; I think we're not seeing eye to eye on the idea of stone as an accent vs. a major player. Oddly enough, though I'd usually say, "Contemporary? That's nice in other people's houses, but I wouldn't want to look at it every day" ... but I do like that picture. The pictures you have posted show a symmetrical fireplace elevation centered under a symmetrical vaulted ceiling. But the floor plan shows an asymmetrical layout, asymmetrical fireplace elevation, and something that suggests high windows set into a shed dormer-- It's hard to tell. Yeah, I noticed that, but few online images are asymmetrical! I like examples, but they seem to be few and far between. i would make the built ins in the gr and kitchen match however i do have "mismatched" cabinetry in the bathrooms the the sinks are placed in cabinets are stained and the other cabinetry is white The difference, of course, is that you can't see the bathrooms at the same time -- but you can see the kitchen and great room at the same time. In my experience, a free standing tub has several practical benefits over a built-in jacuzzi tub. My new Victoria & Albert slipper clawfoot tub is better than my old built-in jacuzzi in every way. Getting in and out is way easier. Lifting my leg up and over a tiled tub deck with nothing to hold onto was a challenge, especially when pregnant. My slipper tub has curved edges that work well as grips and the side is lower and narrower, making it easy to step in and out. Cleaning is also quicker. After every bath, I quickly spray the inside with the handheld shower and then dry with a towel. Done. No side deck perimeter to wipe down or crevice where the tub side meets the wall tile. I used to have to climb into my jacuzzi to reach all the areas that need to be wiped down. Plus those jets never came totally clean; I shudder to think of all the junk that collected in there from the previous owners. The only added work is cleaning under and behind the tub, but that is easily done with my slim cordless dyson and/or swiffer duster. This is a master bathroom that never really gets dirty, so I don't foresee the need to get down and scrub often. On top of all these benefits, the tub fills and drains much more quickly, does not exhaust my hot water heater, and stays hot during a one-hour bath. Oh, and it's beautiful. :) That said, I don't think resale would be affected much, if at all, by the style of tub. I recommend buying the style you think would work best for you.

My youngest son, 31, has the two girls and lives 30 mi, that is the ones I babysit for one day a week. His youngest Lily Grace, was born premature, only 2 lbs, she is a delight now, born Dec 10th, but was really due the middle of Feb., she loves patty cake, and riding the horsey on my knees, first horse is little, so only bounces a little on up to the big horse and the voice gets deep and really bounces, babies love things done over and over. I am a talker...
Does your gd favor her Mother? Maybe you? my 3 year old gd, looks like her Mom and greatgrandmother, at first we thought she looked like Dad, but now its Mom. ladieg

It is so much fun trying to figure out who our gd is going to take after. She so far looks like her dad, loves food like her dad, and has the determination of her mom. She is quite a little character.

I have eight grandchildren and the most important thing to remember in my opinion is to follow the parents rules,but always have fun with your grandchildren.
Lots of love and lots of discipline...usually works.

I have two gds, they are now 16 years old. I only give advice when I am ask. These are my daughters girls and she has her hands full let me tell you. One of them is just like her and her dad. The other one is easy going but stuborn. I am just glad it is her trying to raise two 16 year old girls in the world today. Her rules are the rules they live by and I make sure they know that. Mom is law and I just have the fun and enjoy them to death.

Hi, Denora. I'm nana to four girls 8,9,10& 17mon. They are the best blessing I have ever had. We just found out another little one is on the way.Hey! We own a farm and are always busy. My girls are always ready to help. They love to ride the 4-wheeler & tractor with me. We go for long walks in the woods looking for wildflowers, and we always have to have a picknic. Plane simple plesures are the best. My daughter&son truly love have this nana to help with the girls. They live on each side of us so nana & pape jack's house stays full.
