What to call Grandpa's Live-in?

Hi Grandparents!

I'm a mom of 2 children under 3. My father-in-law "ambushed" my husband at work one day because he thought we told the kids not to call his girlfriend, "Grammy". We always just call her by her first name and so does my child that talks. He never asked what we wanted the children to call her, but we are not comfortable with the term "Grammy". We felt any form of Grandma should be reserved for our real moms. They had to wait 34 years before having any grandkids from us, so it means a lot to them. Please tell me what you think? Are we making mountains out of mole hills? Since her name is Nancy, I thought Nan Nan or Nan might work.

I think it's convenient that her name is Nancy. The children could call her Nana or Nanny. I do think you might be making a bit much of it, unless your father-in-law has a new love every couple of months. Or if his divorce from your mother-in-law is recent I could understand that it could be uncomfortable. But if he loves Nancy and it looks longterm, I don't really see why it should be uncomfortable. One more grandparent could only be good as far as I'm concerned. You shouldn't look at is as if it would disrepect either mom. Nancy deserves some respect, too. Just my opinion.

Thanks for your opinion. We've talked it out, and agree that having another special person to love our kids is a positive. We've talked to our moms too, and they don't seem to mind either. So now, if we can just get our daughter to call her "Grammy", then all will be well. LOL

My husband went to visit him and asked him for the 3rd time to please stop driving and gambling all of his money away. Grandpa went completely bezerk this time and told him he doesn't want to talk about it anymore. He said we will not tell him what to do and he will drive and now he is even going to gamble away more money. He said he is also changing his will. Then he lunged for him to try to choke him and threw him out. He has loaded guns. This is so awful. We are trying to get him in to see his doctor this week. The nurse said she will call him and tell him something to get him there. Any ideas here of what we should do? We are trying to get medical power attorney and get him some drugs to calm him down. If we have medical power of attorney how will this help? Is the only solution a nursing home? My son thinks we are just delaying the problem and he will still have to go to a NH because he will never give up any control. Please help. We already have financial power of attorney . He needs a pill and not be allowed to give any more money away. We visited a nursing home today and it was an awful one. We think it's sad because physically he can take care of himself pretty good, but if he is mentally unstable it cancels out his good physical condition. geesh Maybe we can give him a pill to control his rage. But how do we get him to take it? Then after he is medicated maybe we could get the car and guns. Then do we need medical power of attorney and financial power of attorney to keep him from spending all his money? It sounds like we need a lawyer. Thanks for ANY help. Foggy, It would be nice if I could get him to engage because he does complain of loneliness and he misses my mom terribly. Although he visits her every day, she is not there anymore. Most all of his friends have passed on, and he is a quiet, stoic person by nature. He never had any close intimate men friends, did not golf or anything like that. My son is at the age where he is still interested in Grandpa, but he is starting to give up. It's sad, but I guess it is what it is. However, Grandpa is a baseball nut and Jack is in little league this year (the worst team in the league, LOL :) Maybe I can get Grandpa to sit at a game or two with his crossword puzzles to watch? Although, he will probably get upset as Jack is not athletic like Grandpa was in his youth... PS Laurel, my grandma lived with us for many years and she was crippled, couldn't walk. But I do remember sitting on her lap (even at 12, but she was a big lady with a big heart). We would peel apples sprinkle with cinnamon and then eat them together. You are right, sometimes it's the little things you remember the most.

We have almost the same situation. None of our five grands act as if I exist. Papa is King!! some of them don't even want to go home when the parents come for them. As they are growing older, they are changing. Papa is less important to them. They best way to handle it I think, is with humor. Make a joke about how you always knew how to handle the females and that it takes a while before they wise up. Let her father know that this is not uncommon behavior and it will pass, but while it is going on, you will make the best of it. As she learns to talk more, encouage her to talk to her father, make sure to include him in any conversation you might have with her while he is in the room. Talk about her daddy, Get her to talk about him to you. My bet is that she will soon switch her attentions to him, if she doesn't, then it will be time to tell her things like you're too busy, tired, or whatever when her father is around. She will be getting to the age when she might try to manipulate you. Watch out for it. Good luck

That you everyone for your kind comments. It is very much appreciated. Gail, nothing on this chair is glued. We sewed the welt on the bottom of the chair, and then is stapled it on. I can see from the photos that I have to staple tacking strip on the underside of the chair (on top of the welt). To answer your question when we do a chair that has double welt we hot glue it on and yes, it's the same welt you buy in the craft stores. I know I said I was going to photograph the covering of this chair with a tuturial, but truthfully this chair was a daunting and exausting tast, thus I was too tired to take photos. The seat is the first thig we did, it took all day and came out awful, so we started all over. It is made with 5 pieces of leather sewn together. The second seat came out very good. Here is a pic, (the one and only pic of the upholstering ) It shows the fresh new matting we covered the chair with. The second thing to be done was the inside back, then the inside arms, then the outside arms, and finally the outside back. Actually it was DH's idea to strip the old sofa... The only thing we had to buy is the leather needles, which we ended up not using.

My grand kids have a a step grandma.....and they call her Gramma Judy. That's great!
But you say this is a "gilrfriend"....I don't think she should be grandma until or unless theya re married.
I have a boy friend who is a grandpa and one day one of his kids called me Grandma.....and I said I love you like a grandma but I am not your grandma....please call me Linda.
Grandma is the term for the wife of Grandpa.

Traditional would probably be Ms. Nancy. But hey, whatever works for you guys.

I had a Grandy, Nana, Grandma and an Ed's Wife. I figure it's up to the lady in question to determine what she's ok with being called.

How about "Aunt" Nancy or Nan, at most. She might be gone in a year, then who will they call grammy. I think you should make it clear to your FIL that unless/until he marries, at most they can be a courtesy Aunt.

My XMIL had a second husband and now has a SO, the kids called both of the "uncle", as in Uncle Mike and Uncle Frank. My XFIL had 4 wives before he drank himself to death. He had two of them for such a short time, I'm not sure the kids called them anything, and the last one I think we just called her by her first name. She was kind of weird, so we didn't spend much time with them.
