Goldgirl, I remember that discussion. I think it just scrolled off the forum.

I follow Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch program for what I buy. They advocate wild salmon over poorly managed farmed salmon. I think demand and consumer education is changing the way farmed salmon are raised.

I hope Jimster pipes in because he supported the farmed salmon side of things and I think had good info to back it up. HTH.

And I didn't know this until last spring on a field trip in my area..but Atlantic Salmon are "pen" raised here in the Puget Sound!!!
So you all could be buying Atlantic Farmed salmon that is raised in the Pacific....whoda thought??!!

I agree Jessy..you can find a ton of information that says it's not a good idea..but they've been doing it since 1995 atleast...and someone still thinks it's a good idea???

I just think it's wrong in the advertising arena as well...I mean you can go to the "store" and be on the East Coast and buy Atlantic Farmed Salmon that very well likely came from a Farm on the West Coast..and all they have to say is "farmed" and USA...

There are two separate issues here. There is the issue of food safety and wholesomeness. And there is the issue of fish stock protection and preservation. Monterey Bay Aquarium's mission is the second one and they use the first as one of the arguments to support their case.

I'm interested in both issues and sympathetic to both. But, here of the food forum, I think safety and wholesomeness of what we eat is the main concern.

I think it has been established that salmon raised in pens flushed by the tides with unlimited quantities of sea water and fed a carefully formulated diet are high quality fish. Wild salmon, like any other wild fish is also fine with me, but it is a notch below the farmed salmon in quality I believe. By feeding off natural organisms there is some chance of being contaminated by parasites or bacteria. Not enough to worry me much, but enough for me to prefer farmed salmon for lox and sushi.

The freshness of farmed salmon is another point in its favor. There is no delay between harvesting and processing. Wild fish spend some time, maybe a little, maybe a lot, in the hold of a boat prior to being landed. Again, I am not against eating wild caught fish, but farm raised salmon can't be bear in that resepect.

I do avoid pond raised catfish, tilapia and shrimp. I suspect those shallow, warm water ponds must be overcrowded and unsanitary. It's not at all like salmon pens in the North Atlantic or the North Pacific. Yet, from the point of view of the Monterey Bay Aquarium, pond raised seafood should be highly preferred.

Jim I don't disagree with what you are saying but how does one go about understanding the quality of the farm raised or for that matter wild caught, fish that is being sold in the markets? I find the staff at any of the regular food markets know nothing about the fish they sell.

I deal with a local, small, but excellent, fish monger. I pay dearly for the privileged but I know he knows his stuff and can make informed recommendations, sometimes farmed, some times wild and he also has strong opinions about country of origin.

Not everyone has that option......so do you trust the big guys to have quality farm raised, I don't.

It's tough to evaluate freshness of fish after it is filleted or steaked because the best indicators of freshness (eyes and gills) are gone. All you can do is judge the color and glossiness of the flesh and skin. As you say Sharon, a good fish market is your best assurance of high quality and you get what you pay for.

Because of the way it is processed and handled, I think farmed fish has the best chance of any fish in the supermarket of being in good condition, especially at inland locations. Farmed salmon is usually beautiful looking with great orange color (yes, I know the color is said to be enhanced by additives in their food) and big stripes of white fat which I believe is healthful.

My brain is wandering around trying to ressurect a discussion I read of comparisons between salmon raised on west coast farms and those raiesd on the east coast and in northern Europe.
Whatever I read, I remember it surprised me.
As for fresh fish....living in the mid west, I prefer frozen or previously frozen or flown in fresh today....but previously frozen is lots cheaper!

I have taught about this issue in two college classes--from and environmental science and environmental issues perspective. There is a lot of information out there and a lot of variables because salmon are found under various conditons on both coasts and in other places too--like MI! And in other parts of the world. Several different species of "salmon" and the word "Salmon" also refers to a whole family of fishes (at least I think it is a family). I think it would be difficult to find just one Web site that covers the whole issue in a comprehensive and balanced way. I don't have a big problem with the Monterey Aquarium Web site because they are trying to raise awareness about the fact that fisheries worldwide and here in the US are in grave danger of collapsing. To make something understandable to a large audience without simplfying in some way or another is practically impossible. Enjoy your fish while you can! Of course even that is debatable. But being the huge fish lover that I am (both live and for dinner), I'd rather err on the side of caution rather than risk collapse. There were great tasting species of fish in the Great Lakes that we will never see again because the fisheries collapsed and the fish became extirpated. Extirpated means they are no longer found living in the region. A whole industry in the region completely collapsed and is not coming back. Many smarter people than me have tried to fix it.

Laurie: Jim : I always thought Salmon were in the Trout family.

I'm on the Lake Committe in our small development Association.
About 3 years ago our Fishing Lake was stocked with some
Salmon, along with the Trout.

The fellow that raises them , has a large pond and a number of Concrete pools, for the various stages of growth.

They are all fed by a Stream. There is nothing above the area except hills.
This is in the Pocono Mountain Region.

It seems to be a healthy enviorment for raising the fish.

Most of the fishermen here do Flyfishing ,Catch and Release.
Although the Salmon have dissapeared.

Once in a while, someone will give me a Trout that was injured from the hook.

Can you give me some input; on your opinion, of this situation, as far as the farming of the Trout.

I bought a 20 inch Trout from the owner and took a lot of Photo's, to use for a carving, So I could get the right colors. They Fade fast.

I had many problems at the time.

I have fished for trout, tied my own flies and built my own fly rods since I was about 10 years old. Trout fishing is dear to my heart, although I haven't done much in recent years.

That is an incredibly lifelike carving of a brook trout. I've never caught a brookie that even approached that size. You're not likely to find a brook trout at all except in a few select streams in the Adirondacks, Quebec, Northern Maine and Upper Peninsula Michigan. They are the native trout of the Northeast and are beautifully colored, just as in the carving. Most trout found in the Northeast today are either browns or rainbows, both of which are introduced species. Brown trout came from Europe and rainbows from the West Coast.

Trout and salmon are both classified as salmonids. It's easy to see the resemblance. Doesn't that carving have salmon-like features?

I'm just getting started but I have to keep in mind that this is not a fishing forum.

I've been so busy in the last 10 years, with my wife's
illness, that it took up most of my time.
I have no regrets. It was time well spent.

I have a lifetime fishing license for Pa. but all my gear has been down the basement,
somewhere in the Sports Room , with all my Shooting equiptment.
Some day I'll get out to the Fishing Lake and catch some Supper.
Had to get that in there, to keep this Food Related,
or else YOU would be in trouble.

The Lake is Stocked mostly with Brookies. The Osprey hang around in the spring.
The old guys don't like them. I can tell , by the names they call out.

" They are stealing our fish, that we paid for"
Me = "Ah , Shut the H##l up , I'll put 20 bucks in for a few more fish"

Now I just remembered something , food related.

One guy brought his Coffee Pot and Grille,to the Pavilion, in the morning.
When he caught a fish, he would Filet it and throw it on the Grille with butter and garlic powder and 2 eggs.
Looked like he was in Fishing Heaven.
