Removing adhesive from wooden table?

We are turning an antique drafting table into a dining table. The coloring on the top is absolutely stunning, but there are spots of adhesive all over the top of the table. (There was once a rubber-like cover that was glued to the top of the table). We want to remove the adhesive and then probably just varnish the top. It would be my preference to not sand it down or use stripper, because I want to maintain as much of the current character that the table has. (everything from math-problem scribbles from the previous owner, to color variation that I would hate to lose). The adhesive has to go, though. Does anybody have suggestions? Thank you!
