Does This Floor Exist?

I am in the midst of a major house addition/renovation and it's time to choose the wood floor I will be using throughout the house. Ideally, I'm looking for a pre-finished 5" solid wood lightly handscraped brazilian walnut floor that is consistent in color (we prefer a darker floor). I really like the BR-111 Antiquity Series in Malbec, but my wife is not fond of the color variation. I suppose we can get an unfinished floor and stain it to a suitable color, but not sure if unfinished floors come hand scraped. I'd appreciate any recommendations. Thanks.

I would contact a company called Seneca Hardwood 1-866-306-6249. You can get unfinished flooring that is saw marked,contoured,and micro-beveled and who knows what else. Probably hand-scraped also since they make everything right there. I'm going with American cherry and didn't want the color variation either so I asked for "no sap". I don't know if this option applies to walnut. Many go with pre-finished because it eliminates so much work. But if you can't get the color you want and decide to go with with unfinished, you can eliminate a lot of the work by asking for pre sanded micro-beveled which eliminates all your sanding and if you go with a product like Tung oil which will darken your floor and finish it at the same time you might eliminate the staining depending on the type of wood you apply it to. If you put it on walnut it's all you need. Do alot of research on your finish. Some lighten, darken,
dry fast,dry slow, smell really bad until they dry, have no toxic smell at all, harder but can peel and crack if not applied accurately, not quite as hard but are easy to apply and never give you trouble in the future. I'm going with a non toxic form of Tung oil for my floor. It will darken the wood to the color I want over time, it's easy to apply, and I have a dog so I will be able to touch up scratches in the future with no problem. Seneca hardwood also has pre-finished. Just tell them what you want. They were a big help to me. God Bless.

is it ok to build it up in layers? the subfloor just dried the other day and i worry that adding to it to make it thicker will cause cracks or problems beneath the tile? am i over worrying?

Br111 has 7 3/4 ipe as a normal stock item. Unfortunately orders in any sort of quantity require special order. It is predominantly an architect specified width for that type of wood but is available. Keep in mind that ipe is hard but no harder than the finish you apply on it. The finish is what is going to go first when you ding/drop/scuff something on it. Hardness helps to a certain extent but finish hardness is the limiting factor. For nailing, you can tongue nail ipe. you may get some splits in the tongue but the next plank will still fit. You will have to pre-drill the face nailed pieces at the edges though. A note for those looking at site finished. This wood I would seriously look prefinished. It can't be uniformly dried out by kiln drying as its so dense (maybe in 20 years). So essentially you are drying the outer surface and then over the next few months years it tries and equalize inside. Anyhow, I have seen more trouble with site finished ipe (for interior applications) as it will move a little with changing humidity. I would say if you use it and don't use prefinish then try and seal it as soon as possible. Final note - ipe can come in some variations. It can have light/dark variances or just dark. Depends on who is milling it so be careful there. Some people have though they were getting a uniformly dark floor and they got from light brown to dark brown.

OT to technicolor - I wouldn't personally use ash or red oaks for a countertop since they are open pored woods. They'd need a lot of finish to fill the pores well enough to clean up well in a kitchen. White oak might be a better choice. Jillius - Look at maple with a tung oil finish. I am not sure how tung oil is on a floor as far as wear, but it is a wonderful finish that has little or no yellowing. We use it as a wood finish on bowls and furniture, and it adds almost no color, but it is a small molecule that sinks well into the wood to bring out the grain. It is also relatively forgiving in that if you have to refinish an area it is easy to blend the new with the old. I imagine that you would have to get the floor unfinished and have it finished for you since I doubt it would come prefinished with tung oil.

The 'lowering' of floors is just as tough as RAISING the floor heights. Sigh. There are ways to deal with the trim (as G S states). It is not usually advisable to install wood DIRECTLY over top of concrete. There are ways to do it...but it all depends on SOOOOO much stuff that it makes the average flooring person's HEAD SPIN. Now imaging the headache that would come from someone just entering the world of flooring (like a new homeowner). If you move to laminate (yes...laminate can be VERY high end...and out perform low-level vinyl) you could add in cork underlayment to RAISE the floors back to the wood/tile levels. But vinyl is NOT ALLOWED this type of treatment. Of course you could increase your budget and work with the 8-10mm thick vinyl/WPC/SPC products. They are double the price but they are also double the thickness. As for NOISE going underneath the doors, you can always add a door sweep on the back of the door so that noise does not intrude when the door is closed. Rehanging doors is a pain. Super duper pain. As in "rip my eyes out" PITA! Being a cork flooring person, I would work with a 12mm (1/2") cork floating floor and I would add 3mm (1/8") or 6mm (1/2") cork underlay to get the new floor back up to the height it used to be. Sadly vinyl doesn't allow you to do that. Sigh.
